About this project
we love coffee! we love design!
like most design professionals, we are obsessed with good coffee. like many designers, we view every process in life as an opportunity to re-invent. there are few options for dealing with organic garbage in a big city like new york. pulling all these streams together, we spent several weekends experimenting with materials and processes to find a use for the copious used coffee grounds that are otherwise discarded.
the result is – POTHRA™ – made from resin and leftover coffee grounds.
this unique flower pot brings a new use of an otherwise wasted material, turning an everyday cup of coffee into a functional item that challenges this consumption-oriented world with the idea that eco-friendly need not be ugly. Each piece is unique - different roasts of coffee interact with the resin in surprising and beautiful ways, creating a collection of hand cast individual pieces - where no two look the same.
this kickstarter project is to create a mass-production-technique version of our hand made edition.
you are not buying just a flower pot, but also helping create a proven system for sustainable value-added recycling. our goal is to create a scale-able system for utilizing the many tons of used coffee grounds produced by consumers, and moreover, coffee shops globally to produce useful and value-added products. we can envision a whole range of products from consumer to industrial that can benefit from a locally sourced eco-friendly material.

money raised will go towards:
multipart compression mold development and fabrication,
overhead for dedicated workshop space and tools,
resin for casting 500~1000 pots,
purchase of packaging materials,
staff of 2 for fabrication and finishing,
PR and marketing.
Phase 1 has been completed in order for the product to go into full manufacturing, finishing, and marketing, we need to fund raise which is the start of phase 2.
Risks and challenges
as we have already hand-produced 85 of these pieces for a project for the design destinations new york pop-up launching may 2013, we are uniquely positioned to bring this project to fruition.
ideally, we want to use a corn-based or a biodegradable resin for this project. we have found that securing a reliable supplier for these materials in the USA is challenging, and we hope to create a business partnership to accomplish this.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
a big part of this project is to find reliable partners for a safe resin or binding agent to mass produce the POTHRA in simple compression molds. we made a great deal of progress prototyping with corn-based resins from this company: http://www.safeepoxy.com/ but then it seems they went out of business [see this link http://www.bbb.org/boston/business-reviews/resins/ecopoxy-systems-in-providence-ri-126074/ ]! very frustrating.
we hope the publicity for the project will bring material partners to the table as we continue to research and test new resins.
we feel that even a polyurethane resin will still produce a great product, but it will lessen the eco-profile of the project.
