Hello friends and potential backers,
What Was Done: Volume One is about celebrating The Classic Crime's ten year anniversary through revisiting and re-imagining songs we've released over the past decade.
We want to select ten songs; some singles, some fan favorites & some deep cuts we like, and re-arrange them using only acoustic instruments. This means acoustic guitar, piano, violin, and all sorts of auxiliary percussion (ie, stuff we can hit to make rhythmic noise) will all be featured on WWD:V1.
On top of the 10 songs, we also want to record & release another two brand new bonus acoustic tracks that have never before been heard, just to make sure we're always bringing something completely new to your ears.
The reason we are using the subtitle "Volume One" is because if the project is successful we want to leave the door open for more chapters to be added in the future.
We were absolutely blown away by the support of our last Kickstarter Project for "PHOENIX," where our backers pledged 287% of what we needed. It was a production that became epic in scope and we were so happy for the extra cash pledged because of how it funded the mixing and mastering of the album (a result we are very proud of).
This is a simpler project and requires less funds, so we've trimmed the rewards down to the few that were very popular last time... plus some fun ones we couldn't resist.
STRETCH REWARD UPDATE:
Because you blew our goal out of the water in 4.5 hours and are still continuing to back this project, we are going to make WWD:V1 longer, meaning more songs. We don't want it to be TOO long, because we still want to release a WWD:V2 in the future! Also, we want to focus on quality and hopefully a mid May 2014 release date. Backers can vote for songs they want us to put on the record via this Backer-Only Update (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mattmacdonald/help-the-classic-crime-make-what-was-done-volume-o/posts/633910). Polling will close late on October 20th.
After successfully completing the fulfillment process for "PHOENIX," we are much more aware of the costs involved in completing a successful Kickstarter campaign.
Below is a sample breakdown of our projected expenses on this project, based on an estimated 1000 backers (last project we had 1,981 backers).
How The Money Spends:
Recording = $4,000 (estimated minimum amount needed for studio time, engineering, production, mixing, and mastering of WWD:V1)
Photo's & Visual Art Assets = $500 (album design, pictures, promotional materials)
1000 Digipak CD's = $1,400 after shipping to us
500 Vinyl LP's = $3,500 after shipping to us
600 T-shirts = $3,500 after shipping to us
Shipping an estimated 1000 rewards to you = $3,500
Kickstarter & Amazon costs = $1,500
Total Estimated Cost: $18,000
If we can pre-sell enough packages to raise over $15,000, we can definitely record and release WWD:V1, and we will indeed celebrate with you in 2014!
Anything beyond our goal will go into the production budget - to make the record look & sound better, since we're generally pretty bad at giving a minimal effort, and since $4000 probably isn't strong enough on it's own to deliver a world-class recording (something we're always trying to shoot for.)
We're going for $15,000 because we think that's the minimum amount it will take to make a record we are proud of, and although we believe our backers will blow our minds again, Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, so we want to keep the funding goal as low as possible.

Risks and challenges
Vinyl can sometimes take two months to turn around. It also has a very slow approval process because Test Pressings have to be shipped, sampled and approved before production can begin. This could push the vinyl shipping date further back, but we will make sure to get all the digital copies out one week early as promised, regardless of shipping delays on the physical side.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
