Who We Are
We are Vocal Few, a singer/songwriter duo comprised of Matt & Kristie MacDonald. We've recorded & released four albums since 2012, toured the US & Canada extensively, and enjoy playing our music in stripped down, intimate living room settings. You can find out more about us at vocalfew.com
What We're Doing
We're making our 5th EP a little differently than our others. In order to explain why, here's a bit of back story:
Vocal Few was initially inspired by the birth of our first child (we have 3 now) as a way to solidify a creative outlet for our relationship before parenting obligations took over, and to help subsidize the costs of having and raising children. Our previous albums were self-produced by Matt "on the cheap," so we wouldn't have to start an album cycle with production debt.
Wonderfully, thanks to those who have enjoyed and supported our music, it's worked out so far! So, why do a Kickstarter now?
Last summer (2017) we embarked on our most ambitious tour to date. For 65 days we travelled through 32 US States with our 3 children, some friends, and our trusty (sometimes untrusty) RV. At the end of the tour we landed in Nova Scotia, Canada, and moved into an antique farmhouse that Matt's grandparents owned, with the goal of taking care of the house for the year on behalf of Matt's aunt, and writing and recording an EP about the journey and destination of Grand Pre, Nova Scotia.
Grand Pre is a special place with a lot of history, beautiful landscapes, and amazing people. It's easy to be inspired here, and we have been.
Recording this EP, however, has been a slow process (it's taken several months longer than expected). Despite outbuildings being on the property, the cold winter and lack of insulation in those buildings has forced all studio activities into the main house itself, which is often noisy, to say the least (with 3 children running around on what has felt like dozens of snow days). Finding quiet time and space to record has been difficult and infrequent. This condition has made the DIY nature of our previous recordings hard to replicate.
Last fall we did our first Kickstarter to press our Snowdrift EP to vinyl, successfully delivering a very nice looking/sounding keepsake to our backers. It was fun and engaging, so we've decided to ask for your help to finish Grand Pre EP.
What We Need
We've written and arranged the songs, recorded acoustic guitar, and we're halfway through vocals, but we need piano, strings, and other arrangements as well as final mixing/mastering to finish it off. We're hiring a cellist and violinist to record our string arrangements, and our mixer/producer friend Brett Baird (who helped with Snowdrift EP) to help us finish the songs. This will add to our up-front costs, but we think it's going to make the record sound great (and get it finished in time for our Summer tour).
Historically, we've done a pre-order to help pay for the manufacturing of our albums. That's essentially what this Kickstarter is, a pre-order, instead it will not only to pay for manufacturing, but the finished production as well.
Kickstarters offer a fun way to let everyone have a hand in the final product. We get to share the journey of making it with our backers, and we get to do cool things like put our backers' names in the physical album packaging, among other fun experiences that pre-orders don't normally provide.
We think $7,500 will be enough to print 500 vinyl ($3500), 200 T-Shirts ($2000) and finish recording, production, mixing & mastering ($2000).
What You Get
This ain't no charity! We're excited to deliver high-quality vinyl, comfortable (poly blend) T-shirts, a sweet die cast lapel pin, and the fun experience of opening up the physical album to find your forever printed as an exclusive "thank-you" for your pre-order!
Here's the 1.5" die-struck hard enamel lapel pin:

Risks and challenges
We've done this before so we're confident it will go as planned (as long as we meet our goal).
Sometimes with vinyl there are unforeseen manufacturing delays that make it difficult to get it delivered on time.
We believe our timeline for delivery is realistic, but we will keep you updated here if anything changes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
