About this project
Get ready to grow your favorite herbs and spices at home. We've made it as simple as possible, and with your support we can make it available for everyone.
With our Smart Herb Garden you can grow basil, thyme or other herbs without worrying whether the plants have enough water, nutrients or light. Just plug it into the wall and add water, the smart device takes care of everything else.
Each Smart Herb Garden comes with cartridges for basil, thyme and lemon balm, plus mini tomato and salad rocket as stretch goals (see below). Refill cartridges will be available for chili pepper, mini tomato, peppermint, spinach, salad rocket and various kinds of lettuce. Just between us, we're also working on strawberries.
What's So Smart About The Smart Herb Garden
With more than 3 years of R&D behind the Smart Herb Garden, the backbone of the technology is the growth medium, a nanotech material engineered to supply plant roots with the right amount of oxygen, water and nutrients at any time.
Our technology is probably the easiest indoor garden solution to use on the market, and there's less noise involved than other solutions (we're biased, of course)
We've also built a cutting edge lighting solution. The light spectrum in traditional LED lights makes plants look unnatural on the one hand and can be harmful for children's eyes on the other. We've worked with the worlds leading LED technologists to invent a natural-looking light system that gives plants enough light to grow while only requiring 6 watts of energy. This keeps the electricity bill for running the Smart Herb Garden a whole year to around 4-5 dollars
And yes, there are several patents pending for our technology.
What others say
"In practice, you simply insert the supplied cartridges and fill the reservoir with water. Then power the thing on and — bingo — in a matter of weeks you should see green shoots of awesomeness."
"Although some gardeners were born to grow beautiful plants with a little water and a lot of sun, others need a boost. Click and Grow provides that."
"A nice solution for a tight space beset with bad lighting and an owner without the slightest farmer-esque tendencies."
"Having a stock of growing herbs doesn't have to mean digging around in the garden. In fact, it doesn't have to even mean having a garden to dig around in (at least in the traditional sense). The Click & Grow Smart Herb Garden moves the outdoors indoors."
"The new Smart Herb Garden will help take the guesswork out of growing plants indoors"
We've Done It Before
It took two years for our founder, Mattias Lepp, to get from the first 3D drawings to the first batch of manufactured smart gardens and we've sold more than 50,000 of them to date. Though the technology and challenges are slightly different for the Smart Herb Garden, we've learned a lot when it comes to manufacturing, logistics, customer support and other areas of making it easy to grow plants at home. We will most definitely face some challenges, and we don't want to toot our own horn too much, but we're very likely to ship the Smart Herb Garden on time. (Fingers crossed.)
More About the Rewards
The classic Smart Herb Garden is white, but we also have a couple of color options here on Kickstarter. If you choose the $49 backing level you can choose between Kiwi Green, Soft Pink and Orange lids for your smart garden. And if people like the colorful options more, we might pick one of them as our standard option in the future.
We also have a Black Kickstarter Special Edition smart garden. See preview.
Finally, for the super-backers that are willing to back this project with $1000 of their hard-earned cash, there's the hand made Interactive Next Gen Smart Herb Garden. Stroke or hug the plants to get feedback whether they have enough water, or just say "hi" back to you. Here's a bit of a video demo:
More backers means bigger quantities and less per unit cost. We'd like to share these gains with our Kickstarter backers.
$200,000 - every backer gets an additional Mini Tomato cartridge. Unlocked!
$300,000 - every backer gets an additional Salad Rocket cartridge (in addition to the Mini Tomato). Unlocked!
$450,000 - every backer gets an additional Chili Pepper cartridge (in addition to Mini Tomato and Salad Rocket). Unlocked!
$500,000 - upgrade to Mint. While we can't add more refills to pledge levels, we can upgrade one of the plants. Tests are going well for mint which many backers have inquired about, and so we can upgrade one of the current plants to peppermint. Based on what we know today lemon balm has the least fans, but we would put this up for a vote. Unlocked!
$600,000 - a mobile app. We've made growing plants at home as simple as possible, but they still need some looking after. The Click & Grow app gives you tips on growing plants, sends you important reminders and lets you send photos of your herbs to our Gardener for feedback. It would be available for iPhone and Android.
$700,000 - upgrade to Strawberry. This is the ultimate stretch goal, because neither reaching that level nor having a strawberry refill ready by September is easy. If we reach this level we'll upgrade one of the six plants to Strawberry, decided by a vote among our backers. Our gardener is ready, we hope that you are, too.
Please note that the retail Smart Herb Garden will still come with basil, thyme and lemon balm. These are just additional plant cartridges we want to share with our wonderful Kickstarter backers at and above the EARLY BIRD level. The value of these refills is $5-15 each.
We Need Your Support!
We have the technology and several working prototypes. While our first product has been successful, we're still a small company. We're looking for Kickstarter support to fund creating the plastic moulds for the Smart Herb Garden (this alone costs around $50,000) and to pay manufacturing engineers/consultants that will help us get production-ready.
We've exceed our funding goal of $75,000 and we will use the rest of the money we are raising on Kickstarter to cover the costs of getting the first batch manufactured.
Who We Are Building This For
We've built the Smart Herb Garden for busy city people that like to cook. People who don't have a garden (just between us, we envy people with gardens). People that travel a lot. People that have killed a plant or two in the past by not watering them. People that are geeky enough to want an hi-tech flowerpot.
Measurements and specs
- Size: 11.8'' length x 4.7'' width x 11.4'' max height
- Or as they say in Europe: 30 cm length x 12 cm width x 29 cm max height
- Weight: approximately 850 g
- Built-in light contains 2 LEDs, 3W each.
- Electricity plug compatible in US, continental Europe, the UK and most other countries with standardized plugs.
We guarantee fast hassle-free delivery in the US and European Union.
Some countries are very strict when it comes to dealing with live plants and seeds, even harmless ones like ours. We therefore can't guarantee a smooth delivery to rest of the World. In countries like Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Brazil you may have to pay customs tax when you pick up your Smart Herb Garden, or may have to insert seeds yourself. We will refund backers in countries we can't deliver to.
Risks and challenges
There is lots that can go wrong in getting a prototype production-ready. The good news is we've done it once before, and that our core technology is solid. The things we worry about:
1. Finalizing the plastic moulds may take more time than we're currently planning. We'll get there eventually but this may mean a 2-6 week delay to shipping deadlines.
2. We haven't finalized testing of the optimal packaging for the growth medium. We're currently weighing 2 options, and this can delay the project by up to 4 weeks.
3. Building a new seeding machine is like building a reasonably complex robot. We've done this before but no-one has ever built a machine just like that, so this can delay the project by 1-4 weeks.
4. If our coffee machine breaks down, all bets are off and shipping will take place in 2018 at the earliest. Just kidding :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
