About this project
What is Nabo TV?
For years media centers, DVRs, and video streaming sites have existed to watch TV and Movies. Over the past several years these services have stagnated. Though there are no shortage of media centers, they all seem to be doing pretty much the exact same thing. For years we have watched and longed for a more featureful interface on our TV to be able to watch the content we're looking for, and for years we have been disappointed.
This is where Nabo TV comes in. We want to bring innovation back to the TV and push the boundaries of what is currently being done on the TV, not just as a product company, but as individuals who enjoy watching media on our TVs.
Unified Sources of Content
In every media center on the market, the concept of watching media always begins with choosing "where" that media should come from. Whether it's Netflix, Hulu, HBO, cable, satellite, or some other source, in order to find what you're looking for, you must first choose where to look. For most people though, they don't care "where" the media is, they just want to find something to watch. For Nabo TV we want to integrate all of the available sources to allow you to find content across every medium available to give you the most robust means of quickly getting to exactly what you want to see. Certainly we will offer the ability to filter in or out sources you aren't currently interested in seeing content from, but the ability to join sources together will allow you to find media when you aren't concerned about where it's coming from.
Far too many media centers presume that there's just one user or one context that your household will view content on your TV. We want to fully support profiles so every person in your household can configure what they want to watch, rate content, and get accurate suggestions for content they might be interested in watching.
Do you want to set time limits on how much TV your child can watch per day? Do you want to not allow watching of TV past 9pm? Do you want to explicitly whitelist or blacklist specific content or specific sources that your child is allowed to watch? Our advanced profile functionality will allow you granularly configure controls for your child's profile and even disable access entirely when necessary.
Early on in our research we realized that every person has their own preferences in how they want to see and browse content. Past are the days of channel surfing, but finding the right content to display in the proper format is something everyone has a different opinion on. To that end, the Dashboard will be a highly customizable screen that allows each profile to configure what content should be displayed and in what way. This will allow you to find what you want in the way you want to. With the added benefit of an open plugins architecture, new dashboard plugins can be added to give you even more functionality and customization.
Finding new things to watch can be a nightmare. There's just too much junk to filter through to find what you want to watch. Our suggestions system will help you filter through the things you don't care about to find exactly what you want to watch when you want to watch it.
Do you frequently use your media center and think of a friend or family member that would really like something but you forget to mention it the next time you see them? Recommendations allow you to send and receive recommendations to/from your "Friends" (other users of Nabo TV or by email address).
Pre-Built or Install it Yourself
Though we are building a software platform that will run on Windows, Mac, or Linux, we know that most people simply want a physical device they can plug into their TV and be done. To that end, we are providing pre-built machines with Nabo TV already configured and running on for specific pledge levels.
Are you sick of searching for a movie you heard about only to find zero results? Our focus is to make Nabo TV the complete media solution for both viewing and information. Want to find movies that aren't even out in the theater so you can add them to your watch list? Want to keep an eye out for a great movie made in the 40s, but none of the services currently has access to it? Just because it isn't currently available doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to see the information about it. We will provide a complete database of media so you can find whatever you want and get accurate information to watch, rate, recommend, or tag to watch in the future when it's available.
Beyond the Living Room
Trailers on media centers is nothing new, but what happens after you watch a trailer for a movie you really want to see? If it's in the theaters you might go and see if you can get tickets, but if it's not yet available, you have to remember that you want to see it when it finally comes out. What if there were a system that allowed you to flag movies you want to see and then it notifies you when it's available to watch in your preferred theater(s)? What if you found a movie you're interested in watching, but only when it comes out on video? Wouldn't it be great if you could get a notification when that movie is now available to watch or purchase and then you could purchase it immediately to watch? We want to remove the disconnect between your TV and other related activities so you are able to get the content you want while comfortably sitting on your couch.
We will be offering two different packages when the software is released. Nabo Essentials provides the basic Nabo TV product with all the basic functionality to stream and view local content on your TV but doesn't support social sharing, cloud synchronization, or any premium plugins. Nabo Premium provides all the functionality of Essentials, but adds many additional premium plugins along with cloud profiles to allow sharing and accessing your content from anywhere.

Risks and challenges
This is a fairly complex project to undertake. Creating a media center that will reliably work, efficiently run, and be useful to its users can be a daunting task, but we have worked as professional top-tier developers for years, and this has helped us to develop the skills necessary to deliver. We already have much of the project finished, we just need help taking it the rest of the way.
Obviously this is a pretty saturated market. There are a lot of big name companies investing in this area and though we believe we've got a completely different focus and an innovative plan, the reality is that it's hard to gain momentum when there are so many big competitors in the market. This is one of the many reasons we need your help. Help us get the word out and help us overcome the obstacles of being a small company with big ideas.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
