Driftwood Archives: Beginnings is a 90+ page book that serves as the first volume in a collection of artbooks delving deeper into the world of Driftwood Archives. It is a collection of all of the paintings and concept art I've completed over the past year as I've been developing this universe, and is filled with notes and storytelling that allow a glimpse into my thoughts and creative process.
The book is filled with every complete painting I've done to date for Driftwood Archives as well as all of the concept art that helped shape the creation of this world. Accompanying the art are bits of lore and insight on my creative process, lending a deeper look at what makes this project unique. Almost every spread is packed with margin notes and previews pulled from the currently unreleased short stories.
The final version will be 90+ pages and 8.5" x 11.125" in softcover on beautiful gloss pages.
IN THE BOOK:
- THE WORLD - An introduction to the world of Driftwood Archives to get the reader up to speed with all of the current events.
- CHARACTERS and RACES - Two chapters going into depth on the main characters of the world as well as the races that inhabit it, pulling back the veil on what inspired me during the creative process and why I made decisions that I did.
- CONCEPTING - A sketchbook chapter collects every rough, sketch, and concept piece not printed elsewhere in the book that I've ever completed while working on this project.
- PROCESS - A selection of several paintings that get broken into steps and explained from start to finish, and exploring how my process has changed from the beginning up until now.
Driftwood Archives (or simply, Driftwood) is a worldbuilding project exploring the ever-expanding dark fantasy universe that has haunted my imagination for most of my life. This is the world I've been dreaming up my entire life and has been my sole personal focus for the past year I've been developing it.
It is a collection of the things I love about fantasy (as well as some other surprises) and a chance to bring some originality to the genre, all while crafting a love letter to the things that inspired me to start painting and writing in the first place. I decided early that for all the things I loved about fantasy, I wanted to create a world where every element was a conscious decision that enriched storytelling. A world where things aren't simply recycled just because "it's fantasy" or "everyone else has this". Since the beginning, I've stayed true to this goal.
Driftwood is set in a fallen world that darkness has already overcome, where the world's hope in prophecies foretelling a hero's rise and eventual destruction of evil evaporates when she is killed. Inspired by sword and sorcery, eldritch horror, and esoteric surrealism, it is a dark fantasy spanning an array of genres and storytelling mediums that seeks to weave stories where overused concepts and tropes are reinvented in new ways.
Dominated by terrifying forces, the land of Antorach is suffocating in the Age of the Sunless Sky under Anaurlyth's cruel grasp. The Dawnbringer, Raelyn Malora, was prophesied to bring an end to all of this and free the known world, but she was killed instead, abolishing hope in one moment. This is a world where sorcerers pay for each spell with their sanity, horned elves of the savage wilds threaten to overthrow entire civilizations, maddening nightmare beings struggle against their binds in wanton revenge upon those that imprisoned them in ages long past, seafaring dwarves resist the colossal ancestors that gave them their towering height, and the gods war over the followers that give them power.
Welcome to the Age of the Sunless Sky.
THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING...
I am a digital painter, writer, and game designer, and Driftwood exists at the crossroads between those three disciplines. Driftwood could be described as dark fantasy paintings, ongoing short stories led by intriguing characters, and the setting for a tabletop roleplaying game - or all of these things at the same time.
In the future, Beginnings and further artbook volumes will be joined by lorebooks unraveling the hidden mystery of the setting, storybooks narrating the ongoing tales of iconic characters of Driftwood, and a tabletop roleplaying game that will immerse you directly in the Age of the Sunless Sky. All of these are designed to work in tandem, accenting and building upon one another instead of just copy/pasting content from one to the next.
Driftwood Archives: Beginnings is the first major step toward Driftwood's future, and I'm so glad you are here with us.
Matthew Myslinski is a digital painter, storyteller, and game designer from Mesa, Arizona with a passion for fantasy, horror, mythology and folklore, and the arcane and esoteric. He specializes in dark fantasy and draws inspiration from a vast number of places. After leaving his day job in 2017, he became self-employed full-time, working as both a freelance illustrator and the creator of Driftwood Archives. He has served as a concept artist for video games, illustrator and writer for comics, and has been a convention artist for the past few years.

In addition to the rewards below, backers of ACOLYTE level and above will also receive all unlocked Stretch Goals for free! (Stretch Goals found below this section.)
If you would like to combine pledge tiers or purchase multiple copies of a tier, just increase your pledge to cover the total amount of them added together. The same goes for any item below on the Add Ons list.
After the campaign ends, we will reach out to anyone who pledged more than their chosen tier to find out what additional rewards they wanted.
When unlocked, the stretch goals below will be automatically included with every backer tier $30 and above. In other words... if you are getting a physical reward, you'll also get all of this stuff!
UNITED STATES: Usually between $12 and $18, though some higher tiers include free shipping to the United States.
REST OF THE WORLD: Between $30 and $50. The Incarnate tier includes free worldwide shipping.
What is this for? This cost is to ensure that we send your package safely and securely so everyone is happy. We want you to get your rewards in one piece, all bright and shiny. This allows us to do that.
Why is international shipping so much? Before we launched this project, it was brought up many times how much shipping was outside of the country. We almost didn't do it. However, we love you guys and didn't want to exclude you. With each package, we are trying to keep the costs as low as possible while still getting everything to you safe and sound.
Risks and challenges
The book is already pretty much completely done. It's currently going through a final writing pass and editing, as well as little tweaks and flourishes to the design, but by the time this Kickstarter is funded, it will be ready to print and ship out immediately.
We are printing locally and I will be directly overseeing the quality of the books as they get printed to make sure everything goes smoothly.
Of course, there is always the chance things might be a little late when we are talking about Kickstarter, but we are doing our absolute best to get everything processed on time and out to you guys sometime in January 2019. Should anything go wrong or unexpected delays come up, you'll be the first to know. I believe in complete transparency in every aspect of my artwork, and this is no exception.
As everything is happening local, getting processed personally, and then sent directly to you, I see very low risks across the board.
(If we have misjudged shipping times, there is a chance international packages might show up in February, but we are going to be shipping as early as possible to help mitigate this as well as we can.)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
