Since 2017 I’ve been making Alternate Histories calendars, and they’ve been a lot of fun. Each year I enjoy thinking about themes and trying to find a way to make next year’s stand out & be even more special than the year before.
For 2020 I took my inspiration from vintage kitchen calendar towels. You know the ones; you or your parents might have gotten them from a gas station or a farmers market back in the 1960s or 70s. They usually depicted a farm or Americana scene and have all the dates for the next year printed underneath it.
That’s what I wanted to do this year, make a calendar with images using all that old artwork (with monsters and other creatures added, of course). But then I decided it would be fun to up the ante and in addition to a big 12 x 12 inch calendar with lots of room to write down important dates, what if I made my own calendar towel? So that’s what I’m doing! I’ve taken a favorite design and updated it with a giant T rex menacing a cottage, added in 2020’s dates, and Commonwealth Press will be screen printing these 4 color towels right here in Pittsburgh. Plus each reward includes free shipping in the United States!
The images for all 12 months in the calendar are taken from these old towels; they're shown in the video or you can click here to see a rough draft of the calendar without all the text & "facts" added.
All of this costs a lot of money up front, which is why I’m using Kickstarter again to make these calendars and the towels; this way you’re essentially pre-buying your calendar, and getting it shipped to you in September.
I hope you’ll join me and get a calendar along with a fun kitchen towel; you can even get one of the original vintage towels I sourced for inspiration. Thanks! See you in 2020!
Risks and challenges
I hate to sound overly confident but there really aren’t any big risks! This is my fourth year making calendars and I have a printer I love working with (Jakprints, in Cleveland), and I’ve had six previously successful Kickstarters.
The only real issue is raising the money. There’s alway a chance I may hit a production problem and won’t be able to get the calendars & towels to you by September, but that’s unlikely.
I make my living designing, printing, and mailing out stuff across the country, so this is a piece of cake for me. I just need your help to pay for everything!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
