About this project
Thank you so much to everyone for making this such a fantastic success!
Everyone has been so kind. I can't express how grateful I am.
You may have missed the chance to back the Kickstarter, but you can still get a copy of the book! Just head over to matthewbogart.net/store
I’m Matthew Bogart. I’m trying to publish my graphic novel The Chairs’ Hiatus as a beautiful, two color, hardback book, just like it was originally designed.
You can read the whole story for free on my site
Mary and Nel were known for being close. Throughout the years the two of them zig-zagged the country as the rock duo "The Chairs" they never spent more than a day or two apart.
That is, until Mary mysteriously appears in a new city having given up her music, fame, and friends. She wants nothing more than to work her lousy job and be left alone, but the two people who just showed up on her doorstep are determined to make sure won't happen.
- It’s incredibly difficult to keep the the constant churn of new content on the internet from burying the things you’ve found online that really touch you.
- Making things physical makes them harder to lose.
- Not losing something is one of the keys to getting longterm enjoyment out of it.
- If it’s going to be physical it should be as beautiful as possible.
- Wow, comics are cool.
We've reached our third and final stretch goal, which means everyone who gets a copy of the hardback book will also get a copy of a brand new, Kickstarter exclusive companion comic!
The book will contain 22 pages of material by me, including 17 pages of new comics about The Chairs, as well as 10 pages of guest comics and illustrations by other fantastic artists!

This book won't be sold anywhere else. The only way to get it is by backing the Kickstarter before it's over!
“I love this book. No other comic I’ve read has captured the feelings and challenges of creativity and collaboration quite like it.”
"Matthew Bogart's The Chairs' Hiatus is uncluttered in its story, quiet in its telling, and lovely in the time it spends with you. It illustrates its human moments by enveloping us in the larger spaces we are surrounded by. I felt like I was using a telescope to read a comic taking gentle steps forward into something big and small at the same time."

"The Chairs' Hiatus is a kind of comic I'd like to see more often - a small, human story about how people hurt each other without meaning to. Matthew Bogart's intelligent, graceful cartooning is a pleasure to read."

"As a musician, a writer, and artist, I loved the soul of The Chairs' Hiatus. It's hard to write about music, because really, music is about hearing it. And it's hard to write about being a musician, because being a musician is about feeling it. I heard and felt both while I read The Chairs' Hiatus. The Chairs' Hiatus is an intimate portrait of a musician who's lost both her music and herself, and the quiet journey back to understanding. Highly recommended."

Risks and challenges
When printing a large volume of books like this there's always the possibility of misprints and delays. Having worked in the printing industry for several years I feel confident about my ability to avoid most major problems.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
I've tried including them in the book by adding them on at the back, after the main story, but it doesn't feel right considering how the story ends. It felt a bit like if they put an extra scene after the credits of a movie that shouldn't have one.
The plan is to have the backup stories be a separate PDF that everyone who backs above the $5 level will get.
