About this project
Did you know it takes a recording artist 4,053,110 plays on Spotify in one month to earn the federal minimum wage?
Following your own muse is tough these days. I’m Matthew Fountain. It’s taken me 12 years to write the songs on my album, Born on the Hook. They’re finally ready, and I’m asking for your help in recording it.
Some of the artists who’ve inspired the songs are Leonard Cohen, Talking Heads, Gillian Welch, Nick Drake, Edith Piaf, and M. Ward.
So, why support this project?
I’ve been fortunate enough here in Portland, Oregon to meet the audio engineer Paul Laxer, who’s done work for Typhoon, Morning Ritual, and Holcombe Waller. Paul is a super guy who believes in the project and really wants to help make it happen.
All I have to do is pay him, the studio, the mixing engineer, mastering engineer, cellist, violist, violinist, bassist, drummer, pianist, and backing vocalists.
If you’re not familiar with how Kickstarter campaigns work, just know if I don’t raise the full amount of my goal, I receive zero funding. Also keep in mind, the more you pledge, the greater your rewards will be once the project is finished.
Above all, I hope you’ll support this project because it’s truly a labor of love, twelve years in the making. Thank you very much!

Risks and challenges

To pledge to a project, just click the green “Back This Project” button on any project page. You will be asked to enter your pledge amount and select a reward tier. For US-based projects, you will go through the Amazon checkout process. For projects launched outside of the US, you will check out through Kickstarter.
If the project you’re backing is successfully funded, your card will be charged when the project reaches its funding deadline. If the project does not reach its funding goal, your card is never charged.
If you've backed a project that is still live and are seeing a charge on your bank statement, what you are likely seeing is a temporary authorization of funds. The time it takes for an authorization to clear varies on the bank, but typically takes 1 - 3 days. You will not be charged until the project you backed has ended successfully.
No. Only you and the project creator will be able to see your pledge amount.
