About this project
Beau is a one of a kind statement piece to decorate your space with. We have created a unique sculpture that is inspired by baseball, street art, and living in the concrete jungle. You need to see it to believe it. Designed and created exclusively by Concrete Cat Design House. Made by hand in Edmonton Alberta Canada.
A Tale of Two Brothers.
9 months ago my brother in-law Jason asked me, "Could you make a concrete baseball bat?" At the time all I could say was, "Maybe."
Events were set in motion with that question. For me the "what if?..." questions in life have always been a call to action. Rather than weigh out the pros and cons and deliberate over "what if?" I just do. A few weeks later I presented Jason with my first bat which I have called Frakenbat; the ugliest concrete bat ever made. It is lumpy, bent and too fat at the end; some parts are crumbly and weak but it proved the the point and answered the question.
It has taken a many long nights/months in the studio but 12 versions later Beau has evolved into a beautiful and functional piece of art.
The Answer to "What if?"
The answer is simple, Beau has the potential to be a beautiful and unique object of wonder. To date I have created 12 of these bats. Each Beau is unique and has it's own sense of character and beauty while sharing the spirit of her sisters. Beau looks great in a stand on the wall, leaning in a corner or sitting on a desk or shelf. It has function too, it is a great place to hang a hat, coat and bag.
Concrete Cat Design House is an interdisciplinary team of artists dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what can be done with concrete. We have been in business since 2006 creating architectural detail, public and private art installations, a line of decor sculptures for stockists across Canada and the United States, and consulting and manufacturing for designers and brands. We live concrete.
A Nice Card - Shawna will design a Concrete Cat thank you card. I will write thank-you and some words of wisdom inside.
Concreep - This little guy was born out of concrete, it is all he knows. Let him crash at your place for a while.
Echo - A timeless concrete classic. A perfect stand for your phone, cards, pictures etc.
Europa - One of our first hits and a top pick for our collectors.
Bat Stand - Luxuriously hand crafted out of solid walnut and polished until buttery smooth in the Forest city, Edmonton AB.
Beau - Hand cast and finished Concrete bat sculpture. Hang it on the wall. Hang up your coat and hat. Ward off intruders. Flex offs. It's a gorgeous piece of art that also serves a purpose.
We will use Kickstarter funding to cover:
1. A finished production mold. We have created 2 prototype versions of this mold to prove the concept. I would like to upgrade this mold to high grade materials that would allow us to increase detail and decrease our margin of error, as well as extend the life of the mold before we see the artifacts of break down.
2. A very special bat. We are on the prowl for a new bat to make this final mold. I have discovered through prototyping that a bat with heavy wood grain and deep engraving casts the best detail and has the most impact. It would also be nice to find a bat that has cultural relevance or brings a unique story to the project. We have sourced a couple good options but we are also open to hearing your opinion on this.
3. Materials for production casting. The materials we use are expensive due to the amount of detail we need reproduce in life cast objects like the Beau. This is not your average sidewalk grade concrete. We also need to purchase shipping materials and other incidental costs.
4. Pay the studio. Myself and a full time apprentice do all the molding, casting, and hand finishing. My talented wife and brother are handling marketing and promotions. I will use funds from kickstarter to allocate time to this project from these talented studio staff members.
Risks and challenges
As with any project that involves hard goods, production will be our biggest challenge. The design of the mold for the bat is on it's third iteration and we have produced 12 bat sculptures with the prototype mold that are to the standards I would like to see. By upgrading our mold the percentage of successful castings will increase as will some of the details within the bat. Concrete Cat currently supplies stockist across Canada and into the USA. We are very comfortable with creating production runs for clients and delivering them on a deadline, it's what we do.
Sourcing the right bat to make a sculpture from will also be a challenge but we have a few in mind that would fit our needs as well as the original bats that the prototypes were made from is also nice and still usable.
The stands pose a challenge in sourcing as we are having them made for our studio by a contracted woodworker. The main challenge is that this will be a contractor so we have limited control over his timeline. That being said we have a firm commitment from a craftsperson who we know and trust and works out of our fine city of Edmonton. We also have 2 alternate craftspeople who can also produce our design in the event of some unforeseen circumstance.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
