About

Second, please don't judge this project by my poor oratory skills and video quality. (Thanks!)

The Project

The photo that heads this project is not from Cape Town. In fact, it was taken halfway around the world in Detroit, Michigan, where I live. I've never been to Cape Town, nor -- to my knowledge -- have I ever met a Capetonian in person. However, I think the photo represents the vast majority of humanity in that it shows resiliency; it shows someone walking their life's path. It shows Detroiters, Capetonians, and everyone else. And that's important to me and this project.

Cape Town is one of the most gorgeous places on the planet (at least what I've seen in pictures). As a photographer who primarily shoots cityscape/street and nature photos, I could not pick a better place to start a project.

The soul of a city, of any place really, is within its land and inside of its people. That's what I plan on photographing in Cape Town, and the southern South African coast (my primary focus will be within the Cape Town limits, but I plan on including a few shots from elsewhere along the southern coast).

I will be creating an e-book and print book out of these photos that will include writings from myself, and hopefully others along the way. The print edition will be available at a price that ensures I don't go bankrupt. The e-book will be created through Blurb and the print book will be created using the premiere online photo book publisher AdoramaPix. Note that Blurb only works with iPads, iPods, and iPhones at this time. I am looking into other online alternatives that also do not require extensive design knowledge. (What I will likely do is create a version in Microsoft Publisher and make a PDF).

With this project, I will be exploring the term "Africa" as it relates to the people of the United States, hoping to show a side of Africa that people in the U.S. relate to instead of shunning. I know as I've informed people of my intended travels, I've gotten quite a negative response.

Right now, I have a photojournalism internship lined up through VACorps at The Big Issue, a magazine in Cape Town that I believe will help me in my project's main goal -- finding the soul of the Mother City.

To create this e-book... I need your help because, as you know, it costs a ton of money to travel halfway around the world!

The cost

The cost of the actual trip is going to be around $5,000. This includes travel and living expenses. I will also need approximately $2,500 to print all of the rewards.

Finally, I'll be using the remaining $2,000 to help me pay for camera equipment. I plan on buying a Nikon D7100, a 35mm f/1.8 lens, and a fisheye lens, along with miscellaneous equipment.

Final words

Cape Town is where I want to be in January. It's somewhere I've wanted to go for a long time. It's somewhere where I want to create my photos, and put together a collection that shows the city's soul. A place that shows what Sir Francis Drake was talking about when he wrote in 1580, "This cape is the most stately thing and the fairest cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth."

Kickstarter reminds us when we're building a project that it's not just a project, but a story. That is what I will show with my photo collection and book, Finding the Soul of South Africa's Mother City, and in every single photo I create.

If you have any question about the project ... any! ... please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!

Risks and challenges

The biggest question everyone probably has is about working a full-time internship and doing this project. Is it possible? you ask. YES! My internship at The Big Issue will be a part of the project. It will have me on the streets of Cape Town daily, finding people, finding stories.

So, it's not like I won't have any free time to shoot. My weekends will be spent hiking Table Mountain, taking a train to Cape Agulhas to see where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meet, and just walking the neighborhoods.

Finally, the program I'm interning through, VACorps, has a staff of both new and lifelong Capetonians who will be a great asset to this project.
