Greek Mythology Comic— Olympia Heights: Lightning Rod
A comic spin-off of the YA series about fourteen Florida teens who discover strange powers and an ancient immortal past.
“Most teenagers only think they’re immortal.”
They say that lightning never strikes the same place twice … except when you do a comic reboot!
What's This All About?
After the completion of a four-novel-arch, Olympia Heights is rebooting as a graphic novel with new villains, new monsters, and slightly modified back-stories. Where the novel series used a Neoclassical account of mythology, the comic will primarily draw from Classical Greek sources. You can pledge to get copies of the first volume; posters, shirts, and other swag; and even signed copies of the original novel series.
About the Novels
In 2011, the first Olympia Heights novel, Olympia Heights: The Pantheon, launched for Kindle, Nook, and Paperback. The Olympia Heights saga tells the story of fourteen Florida teens and one biology teacher who discover strange powers and an ancient, immortal past. They are the Greek Gods, and they have been reborn as mortals after centuries locked away in an underworld prison. As they struggle with humanity and adolescence, the Gods must learn to control their powers and to fight off the Titans who locked them away so many years before.
The first comic will be a 6" x 9," 200-page volume with full color covers and black and white interiors with halftone shading. Our artist will render scenes from the gods' ancient pasts in a modified amphora style. The first volume of the comic spin-off, Olympia Heights: Lightning Rod, will follow Zach Jacobs, the modern Zeus, and feature a new villain never before seen in the novel series. Zach's adventure will include cameos from your favorite Olympia Heights characters.
Whether you are a fan of the series or new to the world of Olympia Heights, this book will be an enjoyable experience. It's a reboot and a great jumping off point for new readers, with enough new content to entertain rabid fans and fresh meat alike.

Our timeline is calculated at a pace of one page a day, five days a week. That's a little more than 20 pages a month. Our Art Director, Carly Strickland, will receive monthly page submissions and give notes for revision.
Pages should be finished on or before July 21, 2015. Backer surveys will go out at the beginning of July so we can order shirts and posters. We will begin shipping rewards by the end of August. Some international rewards may arrive in September.
Praise for the Olympia Heights Novels:
“This book is awesome. I love Greek mythology, but sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming. There are many stories, and they all seem to overlap. This book makes Greek mythology accessible and fun.” -Rhiannon Nicks
“Amazing – one of the best books I read in 2012.”- Blake Northcott (Arena Mode, Vs. Reality)
"There are few stories that have left me at the end wishing that the story could continue, but this is definitely one of them." -Josh Henry
“The action is realistic and believable, and the danger becomes more and more personal and important as you turn each page.” -Missy Kirtley (The Royals)
“The story is compelling–fourteen regular teens suddenly starting to develop unique powers over a few months, forced to work together whether they trust each other and are friends or not–is believable with just the right amount of angst for a YA novel. The dialogue between the teens was realistic, and the adults weren’t completely absentee like you see with a lot of YA, which was refreshing. As each of the fourteen teens became aware of their actual God/Goddess selves, it was interesting to see how they reacted to how brutal they had acted in the past and how badly they might have treated those they had loved. The setting and situations the teens were in weren’t contrived, and were enjoyable to read.” -Heather (http://bewitchedbookworms.com/)
“It is clear the author knows a lot about Greek mythology, and I enjoyed the quotes and flashback stories at the beginning of each chapter. In fact, the flashback stories were so beautifully written I would read a whole book just with that writing style.” -Rhiannon Frater (As the World Dies, Pretty When She Dies)
"If you love Greco-Roman mythology, you will definitely love this series!"-Joseph Fedele
This chart will update to reveal stretch goals as we approach the minimum funding level. It is my goal to create stretch goals that add value to reward tiers without extending the timeline of the project.
Risks and challenges
As soon as the project is funded, Sam Albro will begin drawing pages. We will have to work on a schedule of self-imposed deadlines to keep the project on target for the projected fulfillment date. Manga Studio software should expedite the art and layout process. Our art director, Carly Strickland, will manage these deadlines.
Printing the comic should be easy. We have plenty of experience with setting up interior and exterior files. As soon as we have our funding, while our artist is hard at work, we will begin ordering our other backer rewards so that they will be ready and waiting when it comes time to ship incentives.
As a company, Matter Deep Publishing has experience fulfilling rewards on Kickstarter. Our previously successful project, The Incognito Project, had 100% fulfillment with no complaints, and everything made it to the backers on deadline. We plan to utilize the same organization system we used on that project to make sure every backer gets exactly what they ordered.
Converting the files to eBook will be another challenge. Once each page is completed and saved in a high resolution format, we will begin eBook layouts. The simplest will be a PDF export of the comic, given to backers on the good faith that they will respect independent art and not upload it to a file sharing site. A CBZ file should be super easy to create as it only requires a zip archiving program. We will use Kindle comic creators and iBooks Author to create the Kindle Fire and iBooks formats of the digital book, and we will include all four digital formats in a zip file that we will make available to our backers for download.
We have a great support community at Matter Deep to handle logistics and shipping. We are confident that we will complete the project on time and make our backers very happy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
