This new limited edition hardcover coffee table art book from artist Matt Busch is nearly 200 pages of all your favorite movie posters repainted by hand before given a well-deserved zombie treatment.
The book is an incredible journey beginning with early classics like 1961's Breakfast is Tiffany, moving through the magical 80's with masterpieces like Zombie Wars: The Living Dead Strike Back, and into modern years, with contemporary works like Lara Crypt: Tomb Riser. Half of the images in the book are brand new and have never been revealed anywhere! Plenty of (unpleasant) surprises await!
Matt Busch is an entertainment illustrator who has worked in the industry for two decades on many official projects for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Lord of the Rings. He's also provided art for zombie properties like Night of the Living Dead and The Walking Dead and Gene Simmons' House of Horrors.
Hollywood is Dead has been a 5 year project which has enabled Matt to embrace his love for classic illustrated movie posters, combined with his immature fondness of parodies like Mad Magazine and Wacky Packages. The result is disturbing... Just the way you like it!
Each Hollywood-is-Dead poster is faithfully recreated by Matt's passion to adapt to any painting style thrown his way. As opposed to just taking the original poster images and altering them digitally in PhotoShop, Matt has painstakingly hand-painted every detail with traditional mixed media, before slaughtering them with a healthy dose of the undead.
While the art is parody and the images are at times menacing, the project is in no way intended to insult or demean the original films or movie poster masterpieces. Hollywood is Dead is quite the opposite: an expression of love for the lost craft of classically illustrated posters, mixed with the guilty pleasure of drawing morbid and scary images.
In the past 5 years, the Hollywood is Dead series has had viral buzz Online, and also gained attention on G4TV's Attack of the Show, WIRED Magazine and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. For years, fans have been begging for a collected art book. The wait is finally over!
So what's in the book?
Hollywood is Dead will be a gorgeous foil embossed hardcover with 192 pages of full color cinema slaughter. (The book will be as large as 240 pages if we the Stretch Goals below!) The limited edition book comes with a special Signature Page, signed and numbered by the artist/creator, Matt Busch! Not only that, if you pledge anything to the Kickstarter campaign, your name will automatically be printed in the book, immortalizing you forever, regardless of how big or small the Rewards Package you choose!
The majority of the book will focus on the illustrated posters themselves as full pages. The collection begins with The Walking Dead of OZ in 1939 and moves forward through the history of all the nostalgic movie posters you grew up with, leading right into current box office cadavers like The Dead Knight Rises.
The book will also share sketches and preliminary drawings of how the final paintings were created. In fact, for some of the more iconic posters, complete sections will show Step-by-Step images with Matt sharing details on every move made from the first pencil line to the final brush stroke.
Also, the book will have a gallery section of all zombie-related art Matt has done for properties like Night of the Living Dead, The Walking Dead, and Gene Simmons' House of Horrors. The book will be chock full of unapologetic undead awesomeness!
Who would enjoy this book?
- Zombie fans. That's a given.
- Movie poster connoisseurs. The book has a unique way of celebrating the movie poster as an art form and observes the iconic works through the history of cinema.
- Art book collectors. This signed limited edition will be the one you bust out often to show your friends.
- People who love to laugh. This book never takes itself seriously. It's meant to be funny.
- Aspiring artists. It's not a how-to-draw book on the whole, but plenty of insight on Matt's drawing and painting techniques.
- People who love horror. Make no mistake, some of these images are grotesque, but if you have the kind of family that enjoys the absurdness of zombies, then your deranged kids will love this, too.
- Movie and pop culture lovers. The book parodies all the greats. From Star Wars to Indiana Jones to Lord of the Rings to James Bond... Nothing is sacred, the book shreds everything.
- Practical jokesters and Halloween fanatics. It's the perfect coffee table art book to have in your living room. Watch the your friends' faces as they flip through what they thought was a normal book on movie posters!
- People who like Matt Busch as a person. He's a nice guy, and you'd be supporting a really cool project. And you get awesome rewards packages out of it!
Why do this as a KickStarter project?
Upon meeting with top publishers and agents about the book, almost everyone was interested, but no one wanted to do Hollywood is Dead as a large art book. They're expensive to produce, so most wanted to make it smaller. Some wanted to censor the art and tone it down for young children. Many wanted to skip producing it as a collection of art all together, but focus instead on the fictional stories within the posters, hoping to cash in on a movie deal down the road.
Doing this through KickStarter (and your support) has enabled Matt to create the awesome book he has always envisioned. That creative control will bypass anything watered-down and produce the best book possible. We know you'll love pouring through the pages when it shows up on your doorstep!
What kind of cool stuff do I get for my pledge?
This truly is one of those projects that was born for KickStarter. In the last 5 years, the Hollywood is Dead project has produced not only limited edition art prints, but a slew of T-shirts, buttons, stickers, and other great items that make incredible rewards for your pledge.
There are lots of new ADD-ONS at the bottom of this page, including having your zombified portrait drawn by Matt Busch like the one above! Not only would you own the original art, but your portrait will be published in the book! Lots of Add-Ons are constantly being updated below, so keep checking back for more opportunities!
Check out this giant 24" X 36" poster showing the entire catalog of Hollywood is Dead movie posters! The area in the bottom right-hand corner will not only be signed, but artist Matt Busch will sketch a remarque zombie right on it! And the ONLY way you can get one of these posters is through KickStarter!
You may be asking why all the question marks... We don't want to reveal all of the new posters until you see the book! Rest assured, these will be some of the bloodiest, funniest, and deadliest of the series yet!
Here are some quick visual guides to show what killer rewards you can get from your much appreciated pledge...
Once you have chosen a Rewards Package and made your Pledge, you can also choose specific Add-Ons to get even more rewards! (Check back often, as new Add-Ons are being added all the time.)
Here's how you do it. Once you've made your Pledge, see if there are any additional Add-Ons below that you'd like to get. For example, you might like to get an additional book as a gift for a friend. Once you know what Add-Ons you'd like, all you have to do is go to the top of this page and click on "Manage Your Pledge." On the new page, simply revise the amount of your Pledge. So, if you're adding an additional book, you'd add $45 to the overall amount ($55 if International- note that only the book has a different International price, because of the weight / shipping).
And then you're all set! How will we know what items you've added on? Once the campaign has completed, you'll be emailed a survey where you can select which add-ons you want for your overall pledge. This is also where you'll be able to select what T-Shirt size, etc.
However, once the Kickstarter campaign ends, you won't be able to choose any more Add-Ons, so if you want additional cool stuff, please make those additions to your pledge now!
The Hollywood-is-Dead Coffee Table Art Book is funded! But- we certainly have Stretch Goals to aim for. More funds will enable having a larger book produced and even more deluxe bells and whistles. Here are the goals!
Make your pledge now, as these opportunities will never be available at this capacity and especially at these prices ever again!
After making your much appreciated pledge, be sure to share this project with your friends. Even if you don't upgrade or take advantage of the Add-Ons, you'll reap all the benefits of spreading the word to help meet those Stretch Goals to get a bigger book and give you even better rewards!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We don't foresee any risks on the project or pledge rewards. The only challenge that could arise would be an unexpected delay with printers, which would delay the expected date to get the rewards to you.
Should there be any error on our part (example: a shirt is no longer available in your listed size) we would work double to make sure you are more than satisfied with your pledge.
For you to pledge the money up front means the world. We promise to deliver you an awesome and unique experience with your rewards! THANK YOU!
Sadly, because it is. International Shipping costs have nearly doubled in the last year alone. You can blame Postal and Customs Departments of both your country and the US. Or you could blame eMail, eBooks and eBilling for the current demise our postal services face.
Either way, the hardcover HOLLYWOOD IS DEAD Coffee Table Art Book and all of the fun stuff you get with it will be heavy, so that simply costs more. We're doing our best to make up for it by the quality of killer rewards we'll be sending you!
Your book WILL be signed and numbered, as it is a limited edition. It will even have a special signature page to make it all fancy.
The Rewards Package I chose doesn't say I'll get my name printed in the book. How can I make that happen?
Boom. Done. All backers to the campaign will automatically have their name in the book, immortalizing you forever.
