About this project

Quick-Start Demo

Simple Enough For Kids, Deep Enough for Competitive Adults.

You are one of a group of mercenaries, hired to capture or destroy some old combat drones left behind by a long-defeated enemy of the Andromedian Dynasty. You might need extra firepower, so you get some new weapon systems hastily installed in your rickety starship. Those installers really blasted you, though. It’s hard to tell what’s wired up to what. The Shields are a bit up-and-down, too. Oh, well, you’ll have to figure it out as needed... It’s time to hit the sky!

Starship Awesome 3000 is a board game inspired by old-school space-flight sim games with tactical maneuvering, weapons systems that are customized during game play with card combinations, and a novel dice mechanic for resource management.

For me, the ultimate target in game design is a game that is fun to play and "takes minutes to learn, but a lifetime to master." I think we've hit that target with Starship Awesome 3000.

Allow 60-90 minutes for your first run-through of the Quick Start Rules and then the Full Game, but veteran players will usually finish a Full Game in 30 to 45 minutes.

Social Goals

We currently have 62 followers of our Facebook page. When we get to 150 followers, Starship Awesome 3000 will be expanded with "High Strategy Mode."

This will be made up of two additional optional rules to allow players to further reduce the impact of random effects in the game.

First, rules for Drafting will be provided, allowing Pilot more control over their starting technology, rather than being dealt cards totally at random. Second, there will be rules for manipulating dice rolls to help you avoid a particularly bad roll at the wrong moment. I have a few different ideas how to handle this, and will run some more playtest games to nail down the specifics. Backers in LA will be invited to participate in these playtests.

Finally, if we get to 300 followers before the end of the Kickstarter Campaign, we will add at least two more cards to the Technology Deck to support High Strategy Mode.

So share out Facebook page and tell your friends to Follow Starship Awesome:

  Ready for Publication!

My friends, gaming groups in LA, and convention attendees have been playing Starship Awesome 3000 for 10 years using cheap prototype components. But now the cards, board, and Starship miniatures have been beautifully designed, the rules have been fully written up and tested with new players & reviewers, and the game is ready for a larger audience.

Gameplay Design Principles

I've played many of the combat-on-a-grid games out there. But there were a few key things I wanted in a game like this that I couldn't find elsewhere:

- Lots of play options, while Easy to Learn. Get the basic mechanics from a single page, and once you've gone through the rules the first time, you shouldn't have to refer to the rulebook often because things work intuitively. It's simple enough for kids, but deep enough for competitive adult gamers.

- More than just movement on a grid. You have a Starship Control Board in front of you where you pilot your ship with a variety of choices, placing dice and cards each round to tune your ship's performance.

- No pre-game prep; Just open the box and play. No decks to build or squadron to collect.

- No factions. No surprises. Once you know how to play the game, you know how to play the whole game, and there are no issues with unbalanced faction-specific rules. Every ability is potentially available to every player, every game.

- Plays in less that an hour. Experienced players usually finish in about 45 minutes.

- No one gets eliminated early. It's no fun to sit and watch your friendly play, so the game ends as soon as one ship has been destroyed, and the scenario determines the winner.

What's in the box:

Starship Awesome 3000 includes everything you see here:

- 1 hex-grid game board

- 4 Starship Plastic Miniatures

- 7 double-sided Drone tokens

- 4 Asteroid tokens & direction markers

- 20 polyhedral dice

- 4 Starship Control boards, with double-sided shield tokens

- Technology Card deck (34+ cards)

- Quick-start rules sheet teaches the basic mechanics in a short game.

- Full rulebook with the default "Rogue Pilot" scenario and a variety of optional advanced rules for competitive players.

Shot [A] is good. Shot [B] is not, but if the ship had a Heat-Seeking Missile Charged & Ready, it could work. Shot [C] isn't aiming at anything. Shot [D] is only good when equipped with a Turret.

There are no brakes in space, so you must always move the full amount of your Engine Roll. That's why managing power to Engines (i.e., which dice you roll) is so critical.

Chaining together Technology Cards is key to making a shot count! Tech that seems "weak" on it's own can quickly turn-the-tables when combined with other cards at the right time.

Shipping

Shipping will be charged at time of fulfillment. We will go to all reasonable efforts to get everyone the lowest possible cost, but international shipping is expensive. Delaying the final cost is the way to make sure no Backer over-pays to unfairly subsidize shipping elsewhere. If your final shipping cost is unacceptable, we will refund the pledge for any international backers who request it. We expect U.S shipping costs to be around $7 per copy. We'll ship to a European distribution center at our cost for EU-friendly shipping.

Risks and challenges

Your pledge is in good hands.

Starship Awesome 3000 is fully developed and ready for production. Your funds will be used to:
- Hire a Layout Artist to complete the Rulebook with a professional design.
- Pay Artists to finish the few remaining pieces of artwork.
- Print Game copies for Backers at a Reputable US-based Game Printer.

Starship Awesome 3000 has been in development for ten years so it's personally very important to me, the game designer, to see it through. It has been play-tested extensively at board gaming events around Los Angeles. I used **NO PAID REVIEWERS** so you know that the people who've published nice reviews of the game really did enjoy it as much as they say they did.

This is my first Kickstarter project, and first board game publishing endeavor, but I've solicited the advice of several other Kickstarter Creators and Board Game publishers, and done a ton of research and preparation. I've talked to several printers with good reputations who can produce the game components, and I've been in touch with more than one fulfillment company, having selected one to use unless I can negotiate a better deal elsewhere based on the final volumes. I know most Kickstarter game projects deliver late (because I've backed many of them!), but I believe we've added enough extra time into the schedule to handle most typical points of delay in the process. It seems the largest source of delays is in shipping from printers in Asia, but we've budgeted to print in the USA, so this should not be a factor for us.

To top it all off, I am offering a 100% Money-Back Guarantee: If, for any reason, you feel that "Starship Awesome 3000" doesn't deliver more than your money's worth in entertainment, return it within 30 days for a full refund of your pledge and shipping costs. That's how sure I am that you'll love this game as much as I do!
