** UPDATE - ALL copies of the hardcover book will now be signed and dated by Matt.**
I think there is something wrong with our censorship standards, putting nudity in the same category as violence, drugs and anti-social behaviour. So for this sequel to my first book, Private Bodies, we took the nudity to the streets.
Tell me more about Public Bodies.
After publishing Private Bodies, I was confronted by the way nudity is categorised. For example I was twice kicked off Facebook for sharing a non-erotic image that showed partial and blurred nipples. This was deemed as offensive, inappropriate and in breach of the Community Standards. At the same time I saw videos hosted on the site of graphic violence, brutal murders, drug abuse etc... and these were not removed.
I felt it was time to move the Private project into the Public.
Who are the subjects?
The subjects of the book are a cross section of society – there were no conditions or requirements to participate other than being committed to the concept. Subjects include people totally comfortable with their bodies, up and coming models, and people who had never posed for a photo shoot – let alone nude.
The one thing they all share is the belief that nudity in art should not be considered private or offensive.
Can you tell me more about the rewards?
This project is a labour of love – and I am committed to getting this work out there to honour all of the individuals who participated. I have created all the usual rewards including copies of the book and electronic downloads as well as some unique rewards.
I have selected images to be offered as fine art prints - shown on this page, and you have the option to choose your own print from any image included in the book.
Additionally I have offered opportunities for personal tuition and 1 on 1 training for those passionate about intimate portraiture.
What isn't Public Bodies?
While Public Bodies was born from some deep questions I had about nudity, trust and the role of photographers – this is not an academic piece. It is a celebration of beauty and simply moves the art nude photography into public spaces.
It is not censored, it is not gratuitous and it is not exploitational.
Tell me about the shooting process.
Whilst this project is about normalising nudity and our view that it should not be something offensive, we still shot in a discrete way. For most shoots I arranged a time and place in advance with the subject, and scoped out particular shots. We then did a full practice run clothed, running through the poses, lighting options and timing it all out. Then we shot quickly, got dressed and left - in most cases without anyone noticing we were there.
The images are intended to be printed and displayed as large photographs, with the environment and subject working together to form the overall piece.
See above - the new ENHANCED Ebook will provide loads more behind the scenes info.
What kind of book will this be?
Public Bodies is a 235mm x 320mm (9.2x12.6 inch) portrait-oriented, hardcover coffee table book with approximately 200 pages containing a mix of full-color and monochrome photos on high quality paper. The size and stock will match my earlier book, Private Bodies. Most images will be printed full page, or across 2 pages. This Kickstarter covers a 1st edition run of approximately 1000 copies.
Public Bodies is also be available as an ebook and will contain at least 50 additional pages of images.
NOTE: After the Kickstarter campaign is over, the book will be priced at AUD$80 + postage of $20-$50 internationally.
How did I get here?
I live and breathe photography – it is my lifeblood. As a portrait photographer I am fascinated by people and I love interacting with new people. Public Bodies builds upon Private Bodies, and was shot as I travelled the world shooting and teaching photography over the last 2 years.
Where is all the money going?
$35,000 is a lot of money. It will cover all the costs involved in the design, the preparation of files, printing and shipping books and making and shipping prints.
Please note that Kickstarter is an ALL or NOTHING approach - if we fall short by $1 the project does not go ahead. But it is fine to go beyond the goal - I will deliver on all rewards listed.
Thank you for taking the time to read this far - please support the project by pledging your support and sharing this page with your friends.

Risks and challenges
Having completed Private Bodies in 2013, I have been through the entire process successfully. I am using the same printers, same stock and sizes, so the quality of Public Bodies will match the original. See the first successful project here: http://bit.ly/privatebodies
The shooting is almost complete, the images are safe and ready to go.
There is always a risk of delays and hiccups in the design, printing and delivery processes. To cover these I have obtained at least 2 acceptable quotes for each step, and I have included buffers in my timeline to cover delays at any stage in the project to ensure delivery by May 2015. Worst case scenario would be delays (which I would advise of ASAP) or late delivery of books due to courier delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
