Weekly video series exploring unique applications of math in everyday life. Help support teachers & change how math is taught.

Welcome to Math52

According to a Raytheon study, 61% of middle school students would rather take out the garbage than do their math homework, and teacher job satisfaction is at its lowest point in over twenty years. Students and teachers are hungry for something new...but not everyone knows what that looks like.

The Math52 video series will offer a fresh vision of what it means to teach math. Each week for a year we’ll create a new video exploring a unique application of math in everyday life:

  • How far would you have to run to burn off a Big Mac?
  • Do people with small feet pay too much for shoes?
  • Is it ever a good idea to buy AppleCare...
  • ...and what can this tell us about health insurance?

Math52 will help teachers see the kinds of engaging mathematical conversations they can have with their students. Of course, it's the teachers (not the video) who will teach the lesson, but they'll know about it because of the Math52 video. Meanwhile, Mathalicious will provide them the materials -- student handout, lesson guide & multimedia presentation -- to help them do it.

Teachers are going to love Math52. And how do we know? Because it's teachers themselves who are the most enthusiastic supporters!

52 Videos for $27,000?

Creating high-quality video is expensive. It requires a videographer, an editor, location fees, music rights, etc. At $3,000/video, the entire 52-video series will cost $156,000. (This does not include Kickstarter/Amazon fees.)

So why are we only asking for $27,000? Kickstarter campaigns are only funded if they reach their funding goal; otherwise they get nothing. We're trying to raise enough for eight videos, or two months' worth. We're confident that once people see how great these videos are, we'll be able to raise money for the rest.

Of course, if we raise more than $27,000, we'll create even more videos. For every $3,300 that we raise beyond the goal, we'll create another video that will help teachers teach math in a new way. Who knows: with your help, maybe we'll be able to make all 52!

About Mathalicious

Mathalicious designs lessons that teach standards-based math using real-world topics that students care about, from the iPad to the NBA to the odds of finding life on other planets.

Everyone involved at Mathalicious has been a public school teacher, and Mathalicious founder Karim Ani was named in Education Week as one of the nation's top young leaders transforming education in America.  Some of the biggest names in math education are saying that Mathalicious is a game-changer, and teachers across the country are saying it's helping change how they teach math.

What Teachers Are Saying

According to a 2011 survey of Mathalicious teachers:

  • 95% say their students enjoy Mathalicious lessons
  • 97% say Mathalicious helps students become better problem solvers
  • 71% say they enjoy their jobs more when they use Mathalicious lessons
  • Over half say Mathalicious has changed their approach to teaching

“The lessons on Mathalicious are fantastic. Students discuss them in their free time, and by the end of the day those in the afternoon classes know what we doing and are excited to come to class.”
Jim. A, 6th Grade Teacher

“I am a math instructional specialist at a high school and I think this material is the best I have ever seen.”
Tangue S., Instructional Coach

“I love Mathalicious. My students love Mathalicious!”
Broderick T., Teacher

FAQ

  • Absolutely. We will distribute the videos for free via YouTube and YouTube EDU.

  • Teachers can use the videos in whatever way works best for them. That said, we actually don't intend for teachers to show the videos in class. Instead, we intend for teachers to watch the video, understand what it's about and the math involved, and then recreate the conversation with their students. The reason is simple: the video might spoil the surprise!

For instance, the Usain Bolt video asks, "If sprinters ran distances proportional to their heights, how far would they run?"...and then provides the answer. If a teacher shows this, then it might rob the students of the opportunity to do the math themselves. This is why we provide the related classroom materials with each video: because the teacher -- not Mathalicious -- should be the superstar in front of the students.

  • Unlike the sample video above about Olympic sprinters, Math52 videos will include a mix of both live-action (real people) and animation. This will make it easier for people to immediately see how math is at work in their lives, and we include the sample video simply to give you an idea of the types of narratives you can expect from Math52. In terms of length, each video will be between 2-4 minutes.
