HeroBook GM: the little black book for 5th Edition game masters
The game master is the heart of every good tabletop game: they're the medium, the mythos, the monsters, and everything in between. To be a great game master is to be a transparent window into a teeming, expansive fantasy realm. Anyone who's ever done it knows how much preparation, planning, and resourcefulness it takes. HeroBook GM makes all of that faster, simpler, and more elegant.
What is HeroBook GM?
HeroBook GM is a reusable, deluxe A5 notebook for 5th edition game masters. An alternative to heavy hardcover rulebooks and disorganized folders and binders, HeroBook GM allows you to run your entire campaign from a single notebook. Monitor critical stats and combat info on the reusable party tracker, and you'll always have the most up-to-date numbers handy. Quick references inside each cover put the most commonly used rules at your fingertips. With full rules and incredible worldbuilding tools inside, you can simplify your game and focus on creating an amazing fantasy world. And as you dutifully track and develop your unfolding campaign, your HeroBook grows into a mighty tome of lore and legend.
What's in HeroBook GM?
Inside the wet- and dry-erase front and back covers, you'll find fillable NPC and monster templates, tracking tools for your party's stats and combat initiative, along with plenty of space for erasable notes and maps. Inside the book, the full 5E rule set is available and fully indexed for quick lookup when you need a ruling on the fly. Dozens of tables and generators allow you to quickly create NPCs, settings, monsters, dungeons, plot points, treasure, and more with just a few dice rolls, so you're never caught unprepared for your party's antics. Beyond all that, you'll have plenty of blank pages with a unique 4-in-1 note pattern, allowing you to easily write lined notes, draw gridded or isometric maps, or sketch whatever you can dream up.
HeroBook GM is the same compact A5 size as our first HeroBook, which raised over CA$280,000 in crowdfunding in 2018. At 256 pages, it's got additional space for logging all the minutiae of your teeming fantasy realm. A sleek gloss-black-on-matte-black cover makes HeroBook GM quite possibly our most gorgeous design yet. The heavy duty exposed smyth-sewn binding means the book lays totally flat, so you never have to battle against stiff rule pages and important notes that close on you the moment you look away. And of course, it's made from the same FSC-certified and sustainably sourced paper materials, and printed in a carbon-neutral facility.

What are the specs?
HeroBook GM is a 256-page A5 note book made with 70lb acid-free satin paper. The front and back covers are a folded 130lb cover stock, with the inside laminated with a 1.5 mil polypropylene coating. The book is bound with heavy thread and finished with a thin layer of transparent glue over the spine. All paper materials are FSC-certified, meaning they are either post-consumer recycled or sustainably sourced.

Who's behind the project?
My name is Sean Hallaren. I'm a graphic designer and avid tabletop gamer from Vancouver, Canada. Thanks to the generous support of backers here on Kickstarter, I was able to launch my company Material Components earlier this year. I've been enjoying tabletop games for over eight years as both a player and game master. I'm armed with over ten years of experience creating printed products, websites, and promotional videos. My day job has me assisting a wide variety of clients with website and graphic design needs, and in my personal life I'm an fervent video gamer, cyclist, and hockey super-fan. I'd love to hear from you on Twitter or Instagram, or simply submit your message through Kickstarter.

Risks and challenges
This is my second Kickstarter campaign for the HeroBook product line, so much of the risk inherent in the manufacturing of a new product has already been dealt with. We did experience several delays in the course of manufacturing and shipping, so all timelines have been extended for this project based on what we learned last time.
I have identified three areas of potential risk for this project:
PRINTING - The timeline for shipping rewards for this campaign has been extended based on what I learned about the first manufacturing run, and I have added extra time to cover in the event of unforeseen delays. I am again working with my friends at Hemlock Printing here in Vancouver to create HeroBook GM, and was extremely pleased with the quality of the final product.
ADD-ONS - Although I do not foresee any problems with procuring add-on items, I have prepared backups for them in the event that a problem occurs and we need an alternate supplier.
SHIPPING - I will be working with the same shipping providers (Blackbox and Snakes & Lattes) to fulfill rewards. I have also budgeted additional time for shipping based on what I learned with shipping the first HeroBook.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
