AdHoc mode and Local Play are finally here !

Hello Matchstickers !

Last fall we promised you support for AdHoc mode and Local Play as our Kickstarter stretch goals. Well, we are super excited to let you know both features are now available. Just download Matchstick’s latest Android or iOS set-tup app from Google Play or AppStore and you will be all set to go.

With AdHoc mode, you can connect your mobile device to Matchstick directly and fling content from that device to your TV without requiring any Internet connection. Bring your favorite content to any big screen TV and share your stories with friends. Or bring your own entertainment to your hotel room next time you travel. The possibilities are endless. No complicated setup or pairing required. And Local Play lets you stream content from your local servers to the big screen. SAMBA is supported.

So give it a spin and let us know how you like it. We’d love to hear from you on any suggestions for improvements and bug reports. Thanks for helping us get this far.

Ciao for now.

How hard would it have been just to ship the product that everyone backed? The chip you were using seems like it would have done fine considering it's a hell of a lot better than the ones in the leading competitors (apart from Fire stick). Somehow Roku and "rhymes with boneblast" managed to get leading content providers onboard with weaksauce processors and half the ram (a quarter for Roku).

The thing needs to stream video, the dual core CPU with a GPU that does h.264 in hardware was more than sufficient.

    2. Steve Hoult on

Yes it's way behind in coming. Maybe it will come, maybe it won't. Maybe it'll be great, maybe it won't. But for most of this it was an $18 or $34 investment. If you can't afford to lose that much venture capital, don't invest. These Kickstarter projects are are all just a lark. Maybe you'll get the product you thought you would and maybe it just never happens. Crap, I've pissed away more beer in a single night then that..

Get your expectations in line folks. Nothing was guaranteed. So whining about refunds is like pissing into the wind.

Remember, the last update said August and last I checked August had 31 days. So if it reaches your doorstep on September 3-5th it's really still on time s far as the last update is concerned.

Why are there no updates? No comments from ANY OF THE DEVELOPERS who actually received units saying that they are testing, tested it and it works, etc.???

    4. Cory Zerwas on

      Hello Matchstick team.

An update on when the hardware is expected to ship would be lovely. You should maybe just email the developers on software updates from this point until everyone's sticks are shipped.

    5. Ira on

IIRC only a hundred matchsticks were sent out to developers, this is just taunting for all of the rest of us out here...

I don't understand how we are supposed to "give it a spin" and let you know what we think -- or give bug reports -- when we haven't received the sticks yet. How about an update on when THAT could happen?

    10. Jackie Yau on

When I can get my Matchstickers?

I love this update. Like anyone gives a shit, we still haven't got our sticks. Fucking assholes.

    12. pclabtech on

The posters here I guess need a "Reader's Digest" version of this company's outlook on the product:

      1. We got your money, and because of the lack of Kickstarter enforcing their rules (because Kickstarter gets their money from them also) they aren't obligated to give ANYONE a refund.

      2. Once they get your money, they can do anything they want with it and not have to declare what it was spent on.

      3. Once funded, they can change anything they want with the design or firmware / software, because people who pledge aren't "shareholders" in the company and have no voting power in what the company does with the money, or the product.

      4. You won't see a dime of your money get refunded, (see number 1) because Kickstarter will point at their rules for investing money and the risks involved clause.

      5. Good luck trying to get the FTC, BBB, and any other support group to help, the FTC is too busy trying to regulate giant companies, they don't have the time for a small fry startup company, and BBB is only as good as Yelp. They are a customer group that does nothing but report how respectable a company is, but have no legal power to do anything.

      6. By the time any legal actions could be taken again the company to supply the customer with what they actually pledged their money for, the modified, DRM and enhanced hardware version will be shipped to customers and thus fulfilling their commitment to getting something to the pledgers.

      7. Remember, replace all the words that say "customer" with "pledgers" because.... wait for it...
      KICKSTARTER ISN'T A STORE.

Of all the unfortunate things, I have seen Kickstarters that actually listen to the customers, explain why the customer's suggestions can't be added to the existing designs, or actually incorporate them into the design if feasible. This is not one of them. Closed minds with no caring for what the pledgers want, only with their own agenda and goals.

      Sad Indeed.

Complete and Utter Crap I've been waiting forever and you post some crap telling me to try ship my product i paid for i'm done waiting sick of this calling my lawyer now to find out how to end this! I supported you for one reason, I love Firefox this product however doesn't even exist and is horrible. I trusted you and you have let me down for the first and last time. Goodbye to any support ever from me!

    17. Deacon Blues on

Wow. "Give it a spin"? Have you forgotten that you are talking to thousands of people who, because of your switch-and-bat tactics and constant stalling, DON'T HAVE THE FUCKING HARDWARE? That's really adding insult to injury.

I'm done with this scam. Requesting a refund ASAP.

    18. Dave Boland on

I thought last year the update said they had to retool everything to include DRM for Netflix, Hulu, etc., so the shipping consumer (non-developer) units would be delayed until Aug-Oct 2015? I'm not sure where that email is but it would be nice to officially refresh most of the non-devs backers of the guesstimated hardware shipping date.

I'm still backing the project, not sure the advantage anymore over Chromecast or Roku sticks, maybe it'll support direct webpage autobooting so I can at least use it as a picture viewer or digital signage stick.

Note there are no comments from developers saying, "Just testing it out, now."

This is all BS. That update is written like some progress has been made, but there is zero evidence of that.

This project is one of the most miserable experiences ever - Seriously, if there is a company with worse communications and less respect for its funders, please someone show me!

I hope - when the dust settles and the inevitable, "Sorry everyone. We tried really hard (sic) but in the end we just couldn't deliver on our promise" message comes out -I hope that some funders find the names of the snake oil merchants behind this, and we can all do what we can to make sure nobody trusts them with a project again.

These are good news. But to those of us who have not gotten a developer unit (probably the vast majority of the backers), those are mostly disappointing news. Any updates on when you plan to deliver the hardware, such that those project updates about the software will cause more than another shrug combined with the worry that we can write off the amount we backed with? After all the initial delivery dates you set for yourselves were run over ...

This is not the first project I back, also not the first with delays either. But updating the backers with information that's relevant to them is crucial. This update is only relevant to the minority that received developer units. Going by the number of developer units on offer the minority is 250 out of 17,218 backers. That's less than 1.5% of the backers. Get why many the other 98.5% of your backers are _slightly_ upset?

Stop pissing on our leg and telling us is raining.. Should clarify that all these new features are avalible for DEVELOPER units, since you haven't decided to ship or release units to manufacture for end users.. The strip tease is starting to leave a sour taste to this crowdfunded project.

Well that update made me rush here and check ... should I have received the device? Well, no unfortunately. Me again:

Hello Matchstick team, perhaps you should re-read the following:

What should creators do if they're having problems completing their project?

If problems come up, creators are expected to post a project update explaining the situation. Sharing the story, speed bumps and all, is crucial. Most backers support projects because they want to see something happen and they'd like to be a part of it. Creators who are honest and transparent will usually find backers to be understanding.

It's not uncommon for things to take longer than expected. Sometimes the execution of the project proves more difficult than the creator had anticipated. If a creator is making a good faith effort to complete their project and is transparent about it, backers should do their best to be patient and understanding while demanding continued accountability from the creator.

If the problems are severe enough that the creator can't fulfill their project, creators need to find a resolution. Steps should include offering refunds, detailing exactly how funds were used, and other actions to satisfy backers. For more information, see Section 4 of our Terms of Use.

For projects that launched before October 19, 2014, please see our previous Terms of Use.
What is a creator obligated to do once their project is funded?

When a project is successfully funded, the creator is responsible for completing the project and fulfilling each reward. Their fundamental obligation to backers is to finish all the work that was promised. Once a creator has done so, they’ve fulfilled their obligation to their backers. At the same time, backers must understand that Kickstarter is not a store. When you back a project, you’re helping to create something new — not ordering something that already exists. There’s a chance something could happen that prevents the creator from being able to finish the project as promised. If a creator is absolutely unable to complete the project and fulfill rewards, they must make every reasonable effort to find another way of bringing the project to a satisfying conclusion for their backers. For more information, see Section 4 of our Terms of Use.

For projects that launched before October 19, 2014, please see our previous Terms of Use.

      Dear Matchstick team,

We have heard very little firm information about how your product development has been progressing over the last few months. Please can you post with some useful information to manage our expectations - which as you can see from all the feedback is at an incredibly low ebb right now.
I for one think more regular, short updates (weekly, a few lines each is all) would help restore confidence in your product.

Right now it would be useful to have an update on the followiing:-

      1. Please can you produce some form of brief activity schedule of tasks you still need to complete and anticipated timescales for each, so that we in the backer community can have some confidence you will meet the revised shipping date.

      2. Please can you confirm the technical specifications you referred to in your April "better late than never" post. So that we know you have bottomed-out this issue. I haven't seen anything since then, but you made it sound like a decision was imminent and that was over 10 weeks ago - yet we have had no news on the completeness of this activity.

      Many thanks!
