April Update: Matchstick Firmware Upgrade

Posted by Matchstick.tv (Creator)

Hey Matchstickers,

A new version of Matchstick firmware has been released. If you have a Matchstick developer unit, you will be able to get your dongle automatically upgraded. All you do is to make sure your Matchstick is properly plugged in and connected to your WiFi network for at least one hour, then simply restart your Matchstick and that’s it! After the upgrade, you can verify you have the latest firmware version number 201504030000 via your Matchstick set up app.

This version is largely a maintenance release with fixes including memory leak, EMMC issue, and HDMI output display errors. We have also made numerous preparations in this version to get ready for the soon-to-be-announced release of AdHoc mode and Local Play mode. Stay tuned !

I am glad I was not the only one who was confused by this update. I thought mine got lost in the mail.

      Hello Thomas,
You are correct. We are backing a project, not "buying things". On the flip side, if you are asking for funding, you need to be updating your backers on a regular basis, like once a month with relevant information about the project, not simply updates to the firmware. Firmware updates mean nothing to the average backer of a project since they don't have a unit to update firmware on. The Matchstick Project has been mediocre, at best, when it comes to relevant project updates. Remember, when there is a lack of information, people will begin to jump to conclusions, like White Fox. You can't blame anyone for that other than the project team. That's business 101 - heck, it's human nature. With the time it's taking to produce this product, there should really be no excuse for more frequent (and relevant) updates to the project. Even a simple, "hey, October 2015 still looks live an accurate target date" would be nice. :-)

People really need to understand that you're not buying things here. You're paying people to make something and then give it to you. It's up to the individual to decide whether or not they're willing to deal with the risk, but it's not like ordering a book that Amazon has to print, specs and details can and do change and sometimes projects just fail.

I haven't given up hope on this yet, but who knows what the future holds.

Hello! Any updates on timeline? Don't want to pressure you all or anything, I'm sure plenty is going on behind the scenes...but I'm about to move places and was wondering if I should worry about updating my address somewhere... Let me know! Thanks!!

@Reid Sinclair: Yes I know there can be delays. I'm not complaining about the delays. I'm complaining about the (lack of) communication. They did post an update, saying they had someone who should handle regular kickstarter updates. However this "Andrew" never wrote anything. I don't think one or two sentences every couple of weeks cost too much time. The way the communication works, I'm not inclined to support a second mozilla project...

People posting complaints lack any kind of understanding. They are the types that lives life based on principles rather than reality. And that if they complain enough, they will get their way - the mentality of a crying baby. This is a Kickstater campaign for a streaming media device, not medication to keep u alive. U paid into it before it was even in production. If u don't expect delays to happen, then u don't understand how these things work

Some people appear not to fully understand the risks associated with backing Kickstarter projects.

Still, it would be courteous to at least provide some kind of regular status update.

    14. Georg Pichler on

      Hey, Matchstick team,
just wondering when you will post a new update about the current status of the project and maybe an estimation of the shipping date of the backer units and whatever else has come up :)

When should we expect to receive our Matchsticks? I thought it was due to be out in February...haven't heard a thing about the new date since.

Please provide more updates - i understand that this is a work in process, but since your months behind and long time between updates. I fell that i will lose my money. When i wrote just before the original release date, i was told that you were on schedule - then 2 weeks later - oh sorry it will be at least 6 more months. Since then there seems to very little info about the process. Please just give us an honest updates and timely updates - as a group we gave over $400K

      Dear sir,
my friend told me that they purchased it from web and obtained it already. Is that true ?
My question is why we have to wait that long but others could get them so sooner than us ?

    24. Sujay Vilash on

Thank you for the update. Can't wait for August to roll around so I can get my hands on something that no-one else in my family or circle of friends will have. Happy that the Adhoc/Local is the reason I backed this project as my Chromecast does not have it. Two questions though. Firstly, are we still on track for August? Secondly, why is it that no-one from the Matchstick team will respond to any of the comments contained herein? I think replying to some of the comments might be a great start.

    25. Tyler Ritz on

An update once a month or as new news comes up would be much appreciated. It's the difference between loosing so much funding that you may have to declare bankruptcy due to all the money you have already spent, or just having a few people mildly annoyed.

Michael Stolker and Biria are absolutely right. I haven't read through the rest of the comments yet, but I can imagine what's been said already A periodic update of the progress would be helpful. We all know that this is a work in development. Keeping people appraised of your situation, good or bad, is the best way to keep your supporters from becoming angry. Nobody likes being left in the dark.

As long as people know what's going on, they'll be considerate of the necessary delays that a project like this entails.

Hello matchstick campaign. I've been sifting through these many comments and think it'd be a good idea for you to post a dedicated update on shipping dates. Good news or bad, I'm sure your funding backers would all appreciate an estimated timeline for deliveries. Thanks.

OK, this isn't a life threatening thing like oxygen people, calm down. I'm glad to hear Ad Hoc/Local Play is up for release as this is why I backed it. Being a vet of kickstart/indiegogo, I realize going in that estimates of time frames are always just that, estimated, and usually by people who really didn't have all the variables available like they thought they did. So no problem there, but I do agree with some folks here saying that you could do a bit better on the backer communications side. Take a little time out to let the backers know what the devs have been accomplishing and it goes a long way to promoting loyalty. Leave backers in the dark and their loyalty, like a flower, will wither and die. Then you end up with some of the animosity seen here. I respect the enormous amount of work this kind of project takes, just respect me (and my money) and keep me apprised on small developments so I feel like I'm part of it.

Scott> "Take you're[sic] tacky comments somewhere else."
Maybe you should be heeding your own advice. I know there's a chance that English is not your first language (at least that's the impression I got from your post), but that isn't really an excuse to not make sure you fully understood Wilhemsen's post before trying to criticize it.
Failing that, at least try to follow Kickstarter's own guidelines on commenting, summarized as "Be respectful and considerate". Your last contribution was neither.

@Tor Iver Whithelmsen, Thanks for being unhelpful. First, these aren't available in STORES. Second, on a small few have received them, so the post of this info on KickStarter was a mistake. Last, take you're tacky comments somewhere else.

Hi guys, sorry for all this bitching around by the fellow backers. And admittedly you are not doing so well wrt communication and updates. But good to hear you are making progress with AdHoc mode and LocalPlay. I assume that these are high-level functions, basically independent from the OS. So yeah... keep going - and keep us posted!

and you almost made 500 grand! where is the PROBLEM !??

when I backed this project it was because you said we would have the stick in a "competitive" time. right after that (it seems) you just said "thanks for the money and sorry, we have to postpone shipment for a few months" - I mean come on.

By time we do have this stick in our hands, there will be a Chromecast 2 and a FireTV stick 2. Also a new AppleTV. By that time 4K will maybe even be standard...

HOW CAN YOU MAKE US WAIT THIS LONG?? PLEASE HURRY UP!!

I thought you had someone (Andrew) that would take care of communication with us kickstarters... Not really seeing any improvement...
One month has passed, since the last update. It would be nice to know how the project is doing and if the new deadline (august) can be met.
I forget I have backed this project until an email arrives reminding me about the project. But the update usually doesn't contain any news for me and that just makes me sad... It would be nice if you at least posted every once in a while that everything is going as planned, or if it isn't. I just don't want to get a message in August, telling me to wait for Christmas...
