About

What is Task Force: Broadside?

Task Force: Broadside is a unique blend of a board game and a card game, in which players form Task Forces and take on their enemies. The best analogy is to think of a cross between Battleship and Magic: The Gathering, perhaps with a little bit of Risk thrown in for good measure, and then put the whole thing in space.

How is Task Force: Broadside played?

A game of Task Force: Broadside has two or more Task Forces, of one to three players each, attempting to destroy all enemy Task Forces. Each player controls a ship, moving it around the battle grid and using Order cards to help them destroy their opponents or aid their allies. These orders are issued using Points generated by each player's Captain, and can do everything from increasing weapon accuracy to repairing hull damage. In Task Forces with multiple players, the Task Force is led by a special Captain called a Commander. These Commanders have access to special orders which can directly affect enemies and members of their own Task Force.

A Task Force is not required to have multiple players, even when playing against a Task Force with multiple players. Broadside is designed with a cost for some cards and each Ship and Captain - And as long as all Task Forces in the game have the same total cost, the game will be even. So while one Task Force may have a single player with a Battleship, another Task Force may have two Light Cruisers and another may be three Destroyers. This is the main difference between Task Force: Broadside and other games, as many are designed for either one-on-one play OR multiplayer play, be it team-based or a free-for-all type. Broadside allows for all of these, allowing for playgroups and players to play how they like to, all in the same game.

What part of Task Force: Broadside needs funding?

The Kickstarter funding for Broadside is for two things: Artwork and rewards, with most going to artwork. While there is a respectable amount that needs to be done to the core game to ensure balance - such as a lot of playtesting - that can be done with little or no funding.

Are there examples of some cards?

Absolutely! Here's a rough draft of some of them (Click for larger image):

Why isn't there a reward with a single deck?

With Task Force: Broadside, I've embraced the rewards portion of Kickstarter to a great extent, but rather than going on a per-person basis, I wanted to go on a per-game basis. Aside from the lowest level of the rewards, each level gives a complete game — The ONLY thing you need to find is an opponent, and that's much easier to find than an opponent who also backed the game. I want you to have fun with Broadside, not have a bunch of cards that you can look at and go "Huh. I wish I knew someone else that had this."
