About

Get back in touch with the greatest strategic board game of all time

I first conceived MasterPiece Chess some years ago after growing tired of playing the majority of my games over the internet or against a computer. I simply missed moving real pieces.

I tried to play my computer/internet opponents with a real board next to my mouse and keyboard but inevitably the action on the screen found me drawn towards the screen rather than my physical board. This was especially true if I was really against the clock in a shorter-length timed match against another human.

Somewhere along the way I discovered chess computers with sensory boards like this.

Many devices like this can be found today and they nearly all operate the same way. Simply pick your piece, tap its starting square and then it’s ending square. The computer will recognize your move and respond with it’s move that you, in turn, pickup and move for him. Some devices want you to tap the squares for the computer, others can sense the weight of the piece to register the move. There are even some earlier models that have you type in the move coordinates like this old calculator chess game.

Either way, these devices offer a welcome change from staring at a screen to play. Best of all some are even portable to take anywhere; however they aren’t the same as playing against another human.

With the birth of the iPad and touch tablets, it became effortless to tap or swipe of your finger to make your moves against other online players or a computer opponent whenever and wherever you took your tablet.

But despite the convenience and capabilities of the iPad, chess felt as though it had become just a flat picture on a screen. I miss moving real pieces!

I decided to create a chess set that could bridge the gap between a physical over-the-board experience and the highly accessible advantage of digital chess on an iPad

To use, simply setup the pieces over the screen of your favorite iPad chess app’s chess board in portrait mode.

When it’s your turn, pick up a piece, tap the pieces starting square and then it’s ending square to register it’s move. Some applications will permit you to drag pieces as well! When it’s your opponents move, simply move their piece to the corresponding square. No taps are necessary for this. You're simply marking your opponent's move.

MasterPiece Chess is a new way to visualize your chess experience on the iPad.

For those players that enjoy a slower casual game, or would simply like to add a more realistic element to their digital chess training, MasterPiece Chess is for you!

I hope you’ll support MasterPiece Chess! It’s time we got back in touch with chess!

Risks and challenges

MasterPiece Chess represents a new application of the technology that enables touch activation on devices. While it is compatible with every chess app that plays in portrait mode on standard ipads and larger, there are limitations.

Some applications have menus that become clumsy to navigate if you need to access during a match; however, it is my hope that this project will flourish and permit either a fully optimized application or perhaps other application developers will optimize their interfaces to become “MasterPiece Friendly”

MasterPiece Chess is not intended for Blitz or Lightning matches, It’s a perfect accompaniment for slower standard matches, training, and of course, playing a local partner over an ipad board.
