The Nomad's Armory is Thinking Monk's take on a truly portable tabletop gaming dice box and tray combination.
It's the perfect companion for tabletop role playing games and is available in a wide range of both domestic and exotic woods.
The Nomad's Armory is the result of over 2 years of testing with tabletop gamer's to come up with a stunning, portable, and one-of-a-kind, innovative gaming accessory.
The Nomad's Armory easily fits into a bag or the side pocket of a backpack without taking up a lot of space. The entire Nomad's Armory system is composed of 2 unique components (with an optional upgraded lid called the Nomad's Lid) that all fits together to create the perfect travelling role player's arsenal of gear: (1) the Nomad's Tray, and (2) the Nomad's Dice Box. Some of which are the first of their kind.
The Nomad's Dice Tray is where the magic happens. The Nomad's Tray functions as both a storage box and a dice tray. It has strong, rare earth magnets that hold it in place. It also features low walls, so rolls are visible at all angles. You can choose between genuine tanned leather or suede leather for a rolling surface. It also has a magnetic closure to ensure the box stays closed during transport. Even if your dice box has 2 sets of metal dice, the tray securely holds the dice box inside without fear of coming apart, even when tipped upside down. The Nomad's Dice Tray comes with a standard wooden lid with the option to upgrade to the Nomad's Lid.
The Nomad's Dice Box houses 2 full sets of polyhedral dice or various gaming components of your choice. Each Nomad's Dice Box comes with headliner foam inserts with an optional leather upgrade. All the dice boxes, like our trays, are hand finished with an oil that keeps the woods natural appearance, yet protects it from wear.
After the campaign ends, you will be able to choose between 4 different styles of inside cuts for your dice box in the survey we will send you. They are all the same price, so no need to worry about adjusting pledge amounts.
- Full Cut: Great if you are unsure of what you want to put into your Nomad's dice box. Fits up to 18 standard (16mm) polyhedral dice.
- End-to-End: Good for storing 1 large mini or 2 smaller minis (supports 19mm standard miniatures).
- Offset: Store 1 mini and a full set of polyhedral dice with room for 2 or 3 extra dice! (large end fits up to 10 standard polyhedral dice).
- Side-by-side: The perfect cut if you just want to fit 2 full sets of standard (16mm) polyhedral dice.
We are offering various options for inlay onto our Nomad's Armories. You can choose to have an inlay added to either a Nomad's Dice Box, a Nomad's Tray, or both. Each inlay is done by hand with thick inlays that we custom cut ourselves. The typical inlay is very thin, but since we're all about our creations lasting for ages, we use inlays that are much thicker than the industry standard. Scroll down to "INLAY PRICING" for individual prices of each inlay.
The Nomad's Pencil is Thinking Monk's premier mechanical pencil, hand turned on a lathe in your favorite wood. Prices range from $46 (Oak) to $120 (Snakewood). Comes stocked with lead and has a built in eraser under a brass cap! The pencil also fits perfectly inside the Nomad's Lid, so you can protect your pencil and take it with you on epic journeys! No boring journeys allowed.
Leather Dice Box Inserts are the perfect way to add a touch of luxury to your dice box. If you add the leather inserts to your pledge, you will still receive the headliner foam inserts as well.
The Nomad's Leather Pouch was a result of your input. What if you don't have room, or don't want to store your Armory in a bag? The Nomad's Pouch gives you the option to attach it to your belt or the outside of your bag.
The Nomad's Lid houses not one, but two writing tools: a dry/wet erase marker and a Pencil/pen. The Lid also features a stainless steel plate that holds your writing instruments in place when not in use, and functions as a Player Name Plate that magnetizes to the side of the tray so you can have your character name or spell-tracking written down.
The Nomad's Lid replaces your standard lid that comes with your Nomad's Armory. We knew that not everyone may want the upgrade, so we are letting you choose between the two.
Laser Engraving. If you want to add laser engraving, the cost includes the cost for the top face and one of the front faces.
Who is Thinking Monk: We are a father and son team of craftsmen who pride ourselves in beautiful, functional designs that are sturdy, well made wooden accessories for tabletop gaming. Max, one of the founders, has over 30 years of engineering and tool machining experience, one of the reasons our creations come out perfect every time.
Why choose Thinking Monk?: Quality, design, art, ingenuity, and fair prices. Woodworking at this level is much more time consuming and passion involved, but we believe it shouldn't break the bank either.
Monk Quality: Because quality is important to us, there are certain materials we refrain from using. One of those is plywood. It's easy to cover a piece of plywood with pretty wood to save money, but what happens if you dent an area or drop it on a corner? Water damage? Exposed plywood areas when damaged are unsightly at best. Straying from plywood keeps these risks minimal to you. A truly heirloom piece doesn't have plywood. You're spending good money, we want to honor that and give you something that you can hand down to generations.
How the Nomad's Armory is made: We start off sizing everything on our band saw, then finish cutting on our table saw to get the blanks for our dice boxes. From there, the dice boxes/Nomad's lids are fitted into our CNC machine. We have spent countless hours perfecting each and every wood type to ensure that the cuts come out crisp without obsessive tear-out.
From there, everything else is carefully finished by a dedicated hand.
The Nomad's Tray is done entirely by hand. Each piece is selected and matched, then cut, assembled, and finish sanded.
Each Armory is then given a natural oil finish to allow the wood grain to show it's true beauty and character.
Don't forget to add shipping costs to your pledge amount! (Shipping near bottom).

Risks and challenges
Sourcing for wood can sometimes be a nightmare and shipments easily delayed. To mitigate this, we have lined up at least 2 different suppliers for each wood variety we are working with. This way if one supplier falls through we have a backup or two waiting. If we open up new woods on our Kickstarter, it is because we either found at least 2 reliable suppliers for that wood type, or we have a bunch of it in our shop.
The second challenge is if we far exceed our expectations and we have more orders to fulfill than we first thought. To mitigate this risk the reward tiers are actually setup in a manner that, if we couldn't find additional good help, our current team could get it all done within the original time frame. Hiring workers would be a bonus to help us get rewards to you faster and be able to focus on creating more innovative gaming gear for the community. If we hire more employees, it's because we want them to share in the vision of Thinking Monk. We already know how many boxes we can make in a single day, so we factored that in at 75% speed and that's our daily possibly limit (IE: If we know we could make 40 boxes a day, we are saying 30 is our limit).
Aside from wood not being available and the project being wildly successful, the risk is relatively low. We already understand all of our costs related to materials, labor, and fees to third parties like Kickstarter and shipping/taxes. Since we are making these creations ourselves with zero outsourcing, there is no risk of a bad deal gone awry. We own all our equipment, and 100% of our business.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
