9 Hours Till We Say Farewell to Kickstarter!

With less than 9 hours to go, and due to your overwhelming support, we'd like to share a surprise area we are working on for Zombie Playground: the Treehouse. This is a player's personal 'estate' which includes areas for dressing characters, equipping characters, setting up load-outs, practicing with chosen weapons, and a computer for looking through online stores and data. The plan is also to allow you to decorate this area with acquired items to your liking. While the Treehouse is currently taking a back seat to actual gameplay, and is something we were keeping under wraps for a later reveal, we figured you would enjoy (and deserve) this preview!

In Zombie Playground you take on the role of a kid during a zombie apocalypse as seen through his or her imagination.  Your school is overrun by the undead, and it's up to you and your friends to do whatever it takes to survive!

Zombie Playground is an online, team based, action arena game with RPG elements.  Gameplay will be deep, challenging, and rewarding.  The game combines childhood nostalgia with horrific monsters, visceral combat, and a unique atmosphere straight out of a child’s nightmares.  We do want to make it very clear: this is not a game for kids!

The initial release is planned for PC/Mac, but we’d certainly like to support Linux and hand-helds if there is enough demand and support.

Initial Concept Art - look and feel exploration.

The mood we want to capture Zombie Playground is the feeling that you had as a child when you were completely immersed in your imagination fighting monsters, shooting guns, and doing things that you thought were cool from your favorite movies, comics, and video games.  For Zombie Playground, the setting is inspired from popular Zombie franchises and will take place in the local middle school.  We aim to deliver all of the horror and tension associated with zombie titles, but spiced up with some good old childhood nostalgia.  It can be easily explained in the following formula:

Goonies + Attack the Block + Walking Dead = Zombie Playground

Early Concept Art – combat and gore exploration.

Gameplay in Zombie Playground will be a hybrid of third person shooter and action RPG mechanics set in a cooperative zombie survival horror arena.  This is not a mindless hack and slash!  Players will have their teamwork abilities, battle tactics, and survival skills put to the test as they fight to survive against hordes of the undead.  As players progress, their characters will level up, allowing players to unlock invaluable new abilities to help them take on increasingly dangerous challenges.  Acquiring new weapons, items, and articles of clothing will allow players to further customize their characters for even more variety and tactical versatility or specialization.

Character Concept Art

You will be able to select from a number of characters with a wide range of weapons, abilities, and personalities. From brutal close range fighters to agile gunslingers, we want to make sure to ultimately give you a large variety of characters to keep gameplay fresh and cater to different play styles.  Acquiring new abilities and finding new weapons and equipment will help you tailor your character to better fit your play style or to better fill the needs of your party.  As long as the game is successful, we plan to continue to offer new weapons, items, equipment, and even characters long after the release of the game for maximum replay value.

We have been doing our best to make and fund this game ourselves so that we can stay true to our vision, but working full time on other projects to pay the bills really cuts down on what we are able to achieve on a timely basis.  We have been actively seeking out outside funding, but that is hard to secure without strings attached.  Keeping true to our vision and raising money are difficult things to accomplish in tandem, but with Kickstarter, we hope that we can solve that problem and deliver the TRUE Zombie Playground experience.

It needs to be said that every penny donated to this project past the $100k goal also goes into making Zombie Playground bigger and better.  We would love to take you beyond the walls of the zombie infested school and out to other locations in the city.  We want to introduce you to crazy new characters and arm you with all kinds of zombie-slaying weaponry.  Realistically, we would need millions of dollars to fully realize Zombie Playground in all of the glory that it could be.  There is so much potential for content, the material we have to work with is literally endless.  So, what can we possibly offer at $100k when the complete game vision would take a few million?  Here is our wishlist:

  • Alpha version of the game with 2 Player Cooperative Online Play
  • 4 Player Cooperative Online Play  
  • 2 Playable Characters: one melee and one ranged combat
  • A variety of weapons for each character
  • A variety of clothing customization options for each character

  • Character specific abilities
  • Character leveling system
  • A variety of enemy types
  • Classroom Building Arena (Enclosed building with hallways, classrooms, storage rooms, bathrooms, etc) 
  • Additional Player Characters with different weapon and ability sets
  • The Gym and related areas will be added to the Classrooms environment
  • Additional enemy types will be added
  • More loot and goodies
  • Linux support!

  • 2v2 competitive online play will be implemented.

  • We really want to make this game, so even if we don’t reach 2 million, we will continue to update the game and seek further funding from other sources in order to finish it. The reason we set the goal at $100k is because we believe that is the minimum amount of funding we would need to get the basic core elements of the game in play, though with some compromises. From there we can continue to seek out funding and continue to update and improve the game. Releasing the Alpha version to the backers also allows us to get feedback from the community early on so that we can continue improving the game as we seek out more funding and continue adding to the game’s content.

  • The initial environment is an interior classroom building. The building includes many hallways, classrooms, storage rooms, bathrooms, lockers, barricades, etc. It is a fairly large building, compared to a normal elementary school. With enough funding, we will expand to include other sections of the school until the entire school is complete. We have a rough outline of what we want to accomplish with each funding milestone, but if we can get things in sooner, we will. There will also be specific uses to the different areas of the environment beyond just a setting for zombie chaos. Water fountains and sinks can be used to refill water guns, storage closets may contain tape and glue to fix equipment, First-Aid areas will have bandages, and vending machines and food areas will have food to replenish stamina. Much of this environment is already blocked in and will just need more play testing and polish before release. We will show more of this soon.

  • Characters will be restricted to particular weapon types and abilities. However, within these restrictions will be a range of options. For example, a character who dual wields pistol weapons will behave much differently with dual submachine guns than she would with dual magnums. Also, the way that you tailor your abilities will also change the play style of each character. For example, exchanging a flash bang ability for a frag grenade or Molotov.
