A David and Goliath Story Retold
My name is Jason Mason and I love snowboarding in jeans. I love the street style aesthetic on the mountain. Every season I put more and more days in on the mountain wearing jeans than traditional outerwear. The problem is that one fall in denim could cut my day short. Frustrated with traditional outerwear, we created a new look with new technology that relates to todays action sports, life outdoors and to the people who buy them, and sell an aesthetic that changes the game.
I am competing with the biggest names in outerwear and outdoor life apparel because the quality and aesthetic of the Mason Industries product and brand is comparable. Being a start up however my bank roll isn't as deep as theirs. A proverbial David and Goliath story.
Taking the time to do things right
We had specific characteristics and criteria for performance. If we couldn't meet or exceed those expectations with denim then we had no business making outerwear because we wouldn't be adding anything new. Other outerwear companies have made a 'denim like' snowpant but they always felt stiff and unnatural. I wanted the real deal. I wanted to ride in jeans and I didn't want to get wet. So I asked our friend science to help me out.
A formula was developed and we altered it to reflect the material blends we are using in our pants and the conditions needed to snowboard all day.
I had specific criteria from the onset of this project
It had to be real denim and it had to look like normal jeans. This meant hiding all of the tech. They had to be water repellent all day everyday. Today's snowboarder is riding concrete, metal and rocks so our denim had to be abrasion resistant to withstand the bails. The physical demands of snowboarding in a fitted pant meant it had to have stretch.
I made these pants for snowboarding. It was later that I realized their potential in so many other activities. Motorbike riding, construction and labour, cold water surfers, campers, dog walkers, anyone who wants to stay dry, stay warm and stay outside longer.
Being an outerwear pant they had to be warm and smart
Everything about MI is minimalism with maximum efficacy
We didn't just toss any liner in our pants, we used the opportunity to create an air management system in the form of a liner.
This is a floating liner, using combinations of fleece, nylon and mesh strategically placed and working together to regulate your body temperature. The strategic combination of materials collects and moves heated air between the liner and the pants and your body.
Who else is wearing MI Jeans?
Those are the specs and criteria I felt was necessary to make the best snow pants in the world. And as I told more people about them and they saw them work they suggested other uses for them. The water repellent and abrasion resistant characteristics appealed to motorbike riders. I was contacted by an energy company because the liners appealed to their workers in the field. Canadian surfers like them because MI Jeans are warm and dry to put on after getting out of the cold Canadian water.
MI Jeans have already been shipped to Australia for some miners, the UK for some construction workers, Northern Alberta for oil field workers, to the NWT for regular citizens who wanted to wear jeans instead of synthetic snow pants everyday and to Japan because the Japanese love snowboarding in jeans too! These jeans are really for anyone who lives and works in cold temperatures and who want to stay dry, stay warm and stay outside longer.
Where will your money go?
Having gone into production of the Classic Rock Pants I was able to test the market and confirm the need. Now it's time to release the full Mason Industries product line of pants and jackets.
I'm raising $20,000 to finish and prepare samples and to release the full Mason Industries product line. We are pre-selling our jackets, pants and tech hoodies. As well we have been developing new stay dry technology that we want to release but it can only be made in large quantities.
Your volume of support will make possible a world where you can wear your jeans and shirt everywhere and anywhere and still stay dry, stay warm and ride longer. You will still have the option to dress like a futurist scuba diver when you go outside but now you will also have the option to look cool and dress how you normally dress.
We're creating something totally new. Join us!
The full product line is a denim jacket, a button up shirt jacket and tech hoodie. With everything you expect from Mason Industries. Water repellent, abrasion resistant, fully lined stretch denim and stretch cotton jackets. High tech on the inside. Low tech on the outside.
We have two more styles and fits of MI Jeans including cords that we want to release. We are super excited to offer women's and kids sizes too!
Your support now will help make all of this possible.
This is a new and unique product to action sports as it is true and real denim (cotton, poly, spandex) that repels water. The Classic Rock pant is our principle product and is in limited supply.
A full product line is in development
I have working prototypes of the jacket, the pants and the tech hoody. I am currently selling the Classic Rock Pants and I'm designing and developing the new line for 2014/2015, which includes the Heavy Metal and Rap pants, the 9to5er Jacket, Drifter Jacket and MI Tech Hoody's, MI t-shirts and MI Tech bandana's.

The slogan of Mason Industries is
We make the future
On the surface, it's information about who is making ground breaking futuristic products.
On a deeper level, it's the belief that our future relies on our customers and our customer rely on quality.
The true intention of the slogan is that I really believe in humanity and our desire to get along and help each other out. Starting this company I knew I would have an opportunity to have a voice. We make the future is meant to tether each of us to each other. As a reminder that we are all connected and together as a people we make and choose our futures.
This is now a new and more direct layering of the slogan.
With each t-shirt or pants you are rewarded with you will know that together on this project you are one of the bricks the MI foundation will be built on. And that your contribution will be remembered and recognized on the Mason Industries web site as a Mason Industries Pioneer.
Thank you and I look forward to your support :)

Risks and challenges
One of the challenges with selling outerwear for snowboarding is that people only buy outerwear 3 months of the year. So being prepared and well positioned for the sales months is important to us.
We really want to release our new technology but we need to have enough volume to implement it.
My current challenge is public awareness. I have been chipping away at this since the beginning, and I continue to do so. When I tell people you can snowboard or ski in jeans, and still stay dry and warm all day, I get raised eyebrows. Your support will help me with this by promoting brand awareness to the masses.
