Get up. Suit up. Show up.
Saint Harridan’s Kickstarter campaign has come to a rip-roaring, lion-taming, game-changing, ring-the-rafters end! Thank you backers and those who shouted the good news from the rooftops! You can now order from Saint Harridan directly on our web site: http://saintharridan.com
Saint Harridan makes you look like you. On your Best Day. On your Boldest Day. We make high quality suits that make heads turn. We believe in staking a claim. If you feel right in a suit, wear one.
Saint Harridan is raising funds to produce our first suit line in three classic wool options (Sand, Navy and Charcoal). We are ready: we have prototypes, "analog" patterns, a digitizing pattern-maker, a grading service (for sizing), a source for fabric and trim, and a secured factory quote. Your pledges will finalize our pattern & grading work, and send us into production for the first 100 shirts, jackets and trousers. When you pre-order from us now, you'll be giving us the green light to launch!
Saint Harridan is of the community, for the community. We listen. We developed our designs using a focus group; we work with real-life models. Going forward we want to hear from you. Should our next item be a vest? A suit with a different cut? Casual dress pants? Sweaters? But, FIRST, we must hear from you that this is a good idea. If we don't meet our Kickstarter goal, we won’t have enough evidence that this business can work and we cannot produce the suits. We believe Saint Harridan’s time has come. If you agree, don’t wait. Pre-order your suit today! Thank you.
Suits & Shirts
Lyon Jacket & Martin Trousers: Whether on the job or at the altar, you want to dress to impress.
Tailored from elegant, lightweight wool, every detail has been considered to create the best fit for your body: two-button jacket with double side vents, narrow lapel, jetted side pockets, breast pocket, three inside pockets. (We love pockets!) Plain-front trousers with completely functional front and back pockets. No cuff. Dry clean. Made in the US. Sand, Navy and Charcoal. Sizing options are listed below. Named for Phyllis Martin and Del Lyon, founders of the first lesbian civil rights organization in the United States.
Parker Shirts: While we set out to make suits, we found that all appropriate shirts have neck sizes that start at 14.5" - meanwhile, some of our real-life-models have 11” necks. Saint Harridan doesn’t want you in a dapper suit with a schruggy collar, so we have crafted a classic dress shirt in 100% cotton. Spread collar, long sleeves, barrel cuffs, button front, and no pocket. (We only like useful pockets.) Machine wash. Made in the US. White and two other colors, yet to be finalized. (If you are one of the first backers to purchase a shirt, you can be part of the color selection process! See rewards for details.) Named for Pat Parker, lesbian feminist poet.
Fein Vest: Because we reached our $100,000 stretch goal, we have added a vest to the suit, making it an optional three-piece. The Fein Vest features a high neckline that smooths the chest silhouette, 8 buttons to prevent gaping, two functional welt pockets for little goodies, like pocket-watches and monocles (yeah, they’re comin’ back), 100% wool front, with adjustable strap in the back. Sand, Navy, Charcoal.
Saint Harridan T-shirt: 100% cotton. Black. Sizes XS to XXXXL. This T-shirt is available exclusively to Kickstarter backers. (You will select sizing options once the Kickstarter campaign ends.) To add extra t-shirts, increase pledge on any reward ($25+) by $19 each.
Saint Harridan Hoodie: Gilden Ultra Cotton heavy-weight hoodie. Black. Sizes XS to XXXXL. As a sweatshirt snob, I assure you this is a high-quality hoodie. 80% cotton. (You will select sizing options once the Kickstarter campaign ends.) To add extra hoodies, increase pledge on any reward ($25+) by $66 each.
Humble Tie: Saint Harridan will have its own tie line soon, but in the meantime, we found a local San Francisco vendor who loves our mission and is willing to make ties in two lengths. Choose 57" for Saints 5' 6" or less, and 60" for Saints 5' 7" and up. 100% cotton. Redstone or Smoke. (You will select sizing options once the Kickstarter campaign ends.)
Dog Tags: Made in Maine by a local metalsmith, these silver dog tags are hand-stamped and come with a 24" neck chain.
Ring: Made in Maine by the same metalsmith as the Dog Tags (Laura Share), each ring is hand-made of silver. Very limited quantities available.
Handy Dandy Screwdriver: We know how great it is to have tools at the ready, so we've cooked up a Handy Dandy Screwdriver - with 8 self-storing magnetized bits in graduated sizes. It fits right in your pocket - about the size of a Sharpie. To add screwdrivers to any reward ($25+), increase pledge by $12 each.
Pocket Knife. This small 3" x 3/4" x 1/5" stainless steel knife with real wood inlay features a 2" blade, spring lock release, and will be engraved with Saint Harridan's logo on the top of the handle. To add pocket knives to any reward ($25+), increase pledge by $37 each.
Tie Clip: Hammered silver finish. Hand-crafted. Personalized with up to 3 initials. To add tie clips to any reward ($25+), increase pledge by $24 each.
Where Do I Select Sizes? Once the Kickstarter campaign ends, you will be able to select sizes.
Trousers: Waist sizes 26" to 50". Measure yourself at your waist where you naturally bend. Odd numbers should round up. Inseam from 26" to 34".
Shirts and Jackets - We are using an exclusive sizing system which allows for an expanding chest size that does not increase shoulder width or other proportions of the garments. We size for Saints with breasts and no breasts.
Shirts and Jackets - Breasts: Our sizing system for breasts is related to your bra size which we believe will accommodate almost any size breasts. You'll order your shirts and jackets with two size indicators. The first indicator is your bra's band size. The second is related to cup size. (Don’t worry, neither the suit jacket nor the shirt will fit like a bra.)
- Cup sizes up to C, select X
- Cup sizes D and up, select Y
For example, someone with a bra size of 38B will order 38X, whereas a 38D will order a 38Y. Sizes 30X to 50X and 30Y to 50Y.
If you do not have proper sizing on a bra, measure around the smallest part of your chest, then around the largest part. Subtract the smaller number from the larger one. If the difference is 4 inches or greater, order the Y size. If less than 4 inches, order the X size.
Shirts and Jackets - No Breasts: Measure around your chest across your nipples. Round down to the nearest even number. You will always order X. Sizes 30X to 50X.
Returns & Exchanges
We want you to be satisfied with your reward. We will gladly accept a return or exchange of saleable merchandise in original condition within 30 days of ship date.
It is possible that we'll have the suits produced by early March. However, as they say, 'tis better to under-promise and over-deliver. If your wedding is in March, may we humbly suggest you move it to April? We wouldn't want you to be standing at the altar in your skivvies.
Saint Harridan is committed to working with garment houses with fair labor practices, including a safe working environment.
Saint Harridan is bigger than a clothing company. We believe it will change lives. Others agree and have been incredibly generous with their time and talents. Here at Saint Harridan, we count our blessings. You can too - check out this long list of contributors and collaborators. We are grateful to every single one.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have done our best to accommodate a broad range of sizes. In this world of ready-made garments, we all collude in the idea that there are standard sizes. This illusion serves to make clothing affordable, but in reality no two people are shaped exactly alike, and we cannot guarantee a perfect fit. The culture of suiting is to expect some small alterations, which can usually be done at a local tailor. And when all else fails, we have a great return policy.
(Business-speak) Carrying the broad range of sizes that we propose creates risk that inventory will represent an unusually high percentage of current assets. This risk is a calculated one given the unknown size of our target market, the diversity of sizes represented within it, and the political climate of size inclusion. We are mitigating this risk with an appropriate contribution margin. This problem doesn't apply to our Kickstarter project as the pre-orders will dictate the sizes ordered.
A flat rate for international shipping forces us to guess the countries we'll receive orders from, charge an average, and cross our fingers they don't all come from the farthest distances from our location.
All of our careful planning leads us to believe that the goal of a March delivery date is perfectly manageable. And, as they say, well... things can happen.
Every business has challenges and risks, and we believe our challenges have been accounted for and hedged against in reasonable, thoughtful ways. We "launched" in late June of this year with a postcard that was distributed at the San Francisco Dyke March. To date, we have spent less than $500 on advertising ($338 to be precise), and have gone from zero to over 4000 Facebook likes, and from zero to over 2000 people on an email list. We hesitate to claim a viral growth engine yet, given that we haven't sold anything. However, the vast majority of our growth (in popularity at least) has been word of mouth.
From a manufacturing perspective, we have a secure factory quote, prototypes and "analog" (paper) patterns. We have engaged the services of a patternmaker who is digitizing and grading the patterns. In addition, we have several secure sources of fabric (and trim) at a stable price. While it will not likely be necessary, we also have a "backup" factory that can produce the suits and shirts.
Basically, the time for this business has come, and we believe Saint Harridan is poised to be the company that can make it happen. If you've read this far, thank you. We welcome your comments or questions. Onward!
