Here we go again, dear music friends ...
I am so excited (and also terrified) to embark on this fundraising journey with you. THANK YOU for checking out this project!
The brief goal of this project:
The goal of this campaign is to raise funds to record 10-12 songs for my 8th album The World is Your Lover with the help of a producer, manager, and all-star band. These songs will be shopped to record labels and get picked up, distributed, and promoted across the seven seas.* Alternatively it will be released independently as the last 7 albums have been, and rocked as far as they can go!
My name is Mary Bue. I'm a musician / singer songwriter / pianist / poetess / yogini / troubadour. I've been performing and writing original music since 1998. I've released seven studio albums / projects since 2000.
Feel free to listen to my entire catalog here! And here are a few videos of previous work to experience the genres I've explored for a few moments.
Cheribum is from 2015's Holy Bones - directed by Matt Eckholm - Grungy punk pop
Apple in the Ocean - Video directed by Jim and Allen Richardson - from 2012's album of the same title. Piano singer-songwriter melancholy!
The Shit I Left in Duluth from2017's The Majesty of Beasts - directed by Jon Hain - sticking with that 90's rock inspiration :)
What is Kickstarter? How does it work?
For those of you reading who are unfamiliar with Kickstarter, this is a way for creators / artists / inventors of all kinds to fund their visions with help from community. Kickstarter is not about accepting "donations" - I'm not a charity! How it works is that people who back projects can choose from specific rewards. From $5 - $1,000 to anywhere in between (you can choose any amount you want!), the rewards on this project will be musical, artsy, quirky, experiential, and at times collaborative! Check out the rewards to the right of this description or if on a mobile device, click over to the rewards section.
What is this new album gonna be about?
If all goes as planned, this new album will be called "The World is Your Lover." That song is about feeling all the failures stacking, feeling the grief and loss, feeling the fucked up mixed emotions of life, throwing up your hands and choosing to LIVE. Choosing JOY. Choosing LOVE. And so, the world provides the experiences that teach us, over and over, to love or to suffer. And sometimes lovers aren't easy, either, so that's where music can help! These are songs about:
- the river styx
- fuck ups
- the environment
- lightness and darkness
- letting go
- moving on
It is a time of great change, my friends. Fire-y endings and messy beginnings. But that is ALWAYS the way.
This album is different from all the others because someone awesome is PRODUCING IT. My music is very lyrical and emotive with the backbones as piano and rhythm guitar, fleshed out at times with strings and harmonies. The last two kickstarter projects saw me shifting genres to 90's inspired grungy indie rock. This new album is a coming-together of that rock-y shift & my piano-folkie roots into some sort of pop-rock masterpiece.
And Holy bones, did you hear that I have a *manager* now?? He (Mike Buenting - Old School Booking) and producer (Steve Price) have hand-picked the players on this album. While the songs came from my soul, they will be shaped and designed with a team to manifest ultimate crispness and collaborative beauty.
The team is:
Steve Price: Producing, engineering, bass-slinging ... he plays in The Suburbs and was in Rex Daisy too!
Jeremy Ylvisaker: co-producing, guitar-magic ... i have drooled over his playing for many many years ... he has played with Andrew Bird, Jenny Lewis, Haley, and his own magic in Alpha Consumer and so so so much more
Richard Medek: drums - has played with many Mpls greats and beyond including Molly Maher, Erik Koskinen, Chris Koza
Shannon Frid-Rubin: violin - She's been adding wonder and sparkle to Cloud Cult since 2007
Julia Floberg: cello - a stunning talent whether in a symphony or with her own cello quartet Delphia
Adam Levy: guitar and vocals on a track or two - one of my fave musicians from Rev 105 days - from The Honeydogs! And gorgeous, heart-opening solo work.
Crystal Meisinger: harmonies - Crystal came on my very first tour with me in 2004, from West Virginia to Austin Texas. We've often been called twins as our voices have such a similar quality!
Tom Herbers: engineer - does sound on tours with Low and former owner of Third Ear Records - he helped record 2007's Boat With No Oars and we've been friends ever since :) Love ya, Tom!
Mike Buenting: my new manager at Old School Booking - he hooked this thing up and got this thing moving, introduced me to Steve and Jeremy, and lit a fire under me with his encouragement.
And more ... TBA!
All of this talent coming together ... and goodness gracious, it's gonna be kind of expensive. That is where you, dear angel reader, can come in to help!
*This album's destiny is yet to be determined. Our plan is to record it and send it to a list of desirable, responsible, magical record labels to see if I'd make a good fit for their rosters. See, the industry is different these days - there's a lot of luck involved, being in the right place at the right time, knowing the "right" people, and of course talent + availability. I sure as hell don't have it figured out after 20 years of playing shows (yes, my first show singing original songs was in 1998 ... ) I could wax poetic for days about why I am where I am ... but I'll spare you (or read my blogs!) Anyway, we are going to record these songs and see if they find a home somewhere awesome. Fingers crossed. But even if they DON'T fit in with a label that feels like the right place, that won't stop me / us from making this ;) Plus I have so many great people involved, how can it not be magical??!!!
About the rewards ... PLEASE READ!
This situation of shopping for a home with a record label makes our project unusual because *I can't just give you the songs when we are done* as I usually have in the last 3 projects as they may hopefully be picked up by a label. However, when they are finished and released, I assure you, the will be available a little later in the game in all formats and mediums, digital, physical, etc. I will let you know when that happens and *if I CAN give the digital versions your way with the approval of a label, I WILL!!!*
Don't despair - LOL! The rewards for this kickstarter are going to be unique! I've already released 7+ projects - 5 full lengths and a few EPs + b-sides so you'll get a bunch of those previous recordings if you like. Things like a kickstarter exclusive EP, a digital download mix-tape of some of my top picks that I've written since 2000 ... the full digital collection of albums ... paintings, a lyrics book, performances, clothing items, yoga classes, beginner music lessons! You've always wanted to play the uke, right???! Or I'll write a song for you!!!
JUST ADDED! Signed green Premier Guitar!
Budget (approximate ... it all depends on time spent in the studio):
- Engineering, mixing and mastering
- Producing (shaping and designing the magic)
- Paying the musicians
- Music Video(s)
TOTAL: $14,500 - without breaking it down to protect the integrity of the hired folks, all that quality stuff costs some dough!
Friends, please also note that I have many side hustles to support my passion - and since I'm only reaching for $8,000 with this campaign, I'll be teaching a lot of yoga and music lessons to fund the rest of this thing! Kickstarter is ALL OR NOTHING so if I don't meet the $8,000, I don't get anything and your credit cards won't be charged. So it's time to hustle this crowdfunding hustle!!!!
HOWEVER, I am setting a few stretch goals!
If we make $10,000, every backer at every level gets two home recorded demos of the tracks before they are fully produced. Special "rare" b-sides just for you :) (these will be different than the Kickstarter exclusive, although this is also "exclusive"
If we make $12,000, I'll sing the whole album front to back in my house on the baby grand and record a video for you all.
If we make $14,500, I'll do like Amanda Palmer and sing a song naked like she's gonna do for her Patreon! Just kidding! I'm too modest! But I'll do something wacky ... just you wait!
Finally, here is some more $$$ info which sounds a little daunting but is worth noting:
If I don't get support from a label, these are the additional costs:
- CD duplication $1,000-3,000 depending on album packaging and how many
- Vinyl mastering + duplication - $3,000+ for 300-500 albums
- Publicity, local and national - $1,500 - $3,000 depending how big and how long the campaigns are
- Music Video promo for 3 month campaign - $1,500
TOTAL = $10,500 if we do the high end promo stuff
OOOOOH I sure could use your support this month!
Above and beyond, the reason I make stuff is because I love to make it.
I've been doing it for so long that lots of my early fans and friends probably can't believe that I'm still doing it! HA! ...
Yet my soul yearns to make these songs. The words and melodies come from secret places. I long to share them with you. Please consider supporting this project. Thank you with all of my heart.
BIG LOVE, Mary

Risks and challenges
Q. It seems odd that you are raising money to record an album but then we don't get the album. Can you explain this situation further?
A. You're telling me! I had such a hard time trying to describe this. The goal is to record it and then shop it to some awesome record labels and see if they might like to add it to their roster. Record labels work in a variety of ways and ideally they would help distribute the album far and wide, and cover some of the costs to duplicate it, and they have publicity teams that help get the word out. If we don't get a great record deal, then I will release this independently. Those of you who backed it will get a digital copy then. YAY!
Q. How will we be able to reach you if we don't get our promised pledges in a timely fashion?
A. I am online all the live-long day. Please reach me at any of these mediums and I will do my best to write you back in a timely fashion and remedy the issue:
Q. What if I don't want the rewards? Or I want a combination of rewards that isn't listed???
A. Send me a message and we'll work out a deal! THANK YOU!
Q. What if I don't like the album when I listen to it?
A. Dang - sorry to hear that! Art is in the eye of the beholder and while I wish that everyone loved my music, sometimes people have different taste. Thank you for taking a risk on me as I mentioned this album is a little different than my previous work! I appreciate that you would allow this here artist to evolve and explore different modes of expression ...
