We did it! The main recording is funded! Scroll down to see the initial pitch! For now:
Stretch Goal 1 is called HORN MASTERING - $5000
Our first stretch goal will fund a horn section and the mastering process! One of the biggest and coolest of things that we plan to feature on this album is orchestrated horn parts, which we've already begun writing. But we've got to rent instruments, hire musicians, and record them! (Plus with more people, the faster we can dig!) Picture these epic songs…but with soaring and majestic horn parts! You didn't think they could be more epic, it's like at first a lion appeared over the hilltop with the sunrise streaming behind his mane, and you were like, "EPIC!". But you add horns, and now the lion is also surrounded by fighter jets that are piloted by monkeys and cowboys all giving you a thumbs up. That's what horns do, and you are like, "SUPER MEGA EPICFACE!" Sorry we made the Super Bowl feel so boring...
Achieving Stretch Goal 1 will unlock at least one Battle Action Bio Card for everyone who has pledged $15 or more, and an additional card if you've already pledged for a battle action card! But the real bonus is that all the songs you get will have cool horn parts on them...
Any rock album also needs to go through a process called "Mastering". Basically, some Wizards take everything you've recorded and make it sound like One Big Album. One Big Album that sounds good on good speakers and ear buds alike. This costs the bucks, it's like a level 12 Wizard skill. We'll also need some of those cool little brushes to dust off the artifacts we find.
Mastering will cost at least $800-$1000. Horn rental is $250, and paying players will be another $500, a total of an additional $1550, plus $150 to cover taxes and shippings. An additional $1700, bringing the total up to $5000.
-------------------------------The initial PITCH:
In late 2012, Uncle Monsterface, would-be superheroes/rock band/multimedia experience, set out to explore the outer reaches of their mysterious home, Dino-Skeleton Island. They sought a quest (or a bar), but instead found a cave, and fell in. When they looked up, upon the walls they saw the painted tale of the island's ancient iconic protectors, The LAVA MEN.
Uncle Monsterface has found their quest...
...but they need your help to tell this tale. Uncle Monsterface is embarking on an unprecedented archaeological excavation of Dino-skeleton Island. Thus far we've uncovered the music to a full-length concept album featuring songs about each of the LAVA MEN. Additionally we're still unearthing artifacts from this mysterious lost cave, archaeological discoveries arriving in the form of: lost battle action play cards (obviously), drawings, comics, shirts, and other bizarre oddments (all of which are curiously well-preserved for having been found in an old cave...).
With each new archaeological discovery, we update the LAVA MEN battle files via their Battle Action Card. Here's the Ninja's:
Who are all of the LAVA MEN?
Glad you asked. According to our current discoveries, the LAVA MEN are the folks who built this giant, seemingly infinite volcanic base that we discovered when we washed up upon its shores. The wall paintings indicate that in the main team we have: The S.C.U.B.A. Diver, Ninja, Zombie, Accountant, Brain Rocket Scientist, Sports Robot, The Builder…and the The Rest (the often-ignored auxiliary brigade)! Details are emerging as the archaeological dig progresses, but all indications point to rock songs about each of these iconic heroes...and a few others, too...
"RISE of the LAVA MEN" has been in the works for more than two years (or is it CENTURIES?…No, it's years…). Now there are FIFTEEN brand new songs that are 100% written and just need to be recorded. Last year, Monsterface recorded two early versions of the tracks for "S.C.U.B.A. Diver" and "(don't fear the) Ninja" at the fabulous Seaside Studios in Brooklyn and started working with the ridiculously talented folks at both Infehnite Design and The Fencing and Archery Company on designs and illustrations. Check out these "not fully restored" early releases and discoveries, you can download them for free while supplies last, and they each have a cool B-side!
This June, Uncle Monsterface is headed back to Seaside to work with the fabulous archeologist/engineer Jon "Indiana" Altschuler! This guy has worked with They Might Be Giants, David Byrne, and has heard of archeological sites like the tomb of King Tutankhamun and Pompeii. Plus, he's nice.
According to the artifacts we've uncovered, we need to record drums, guitars, keyboards, and vocals for seven more brand new full-length songs, five more weird short songs, and, now that we have full scores, new versions of Ninja and SCUBA. Did you do the math and not get fifteen? That's besause there is also an EPIC THEME SONG! And we also need to, you know, produce a bunch of ridiculously cool art. Everything is ready to be unearthed, arranged and overly thought out and fancy-fied, but studio time costs buckaroos!
MAIN GOAL funds Excavation down to Striation Level 13 and STUDIO TIME! -$3300
We can't get the album done without going and recording it, and for some reason people want to get paid for that sort of thing. So our first goal of $3300 simply covers the basics of studio time and extra dynamite.
If and when we achieve our main goal, everyone will receive a download of our KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE SONG, "Little Trash Can Man: Song for R2D2", (that's right, THAT R2D2, and that actually equals SIXTEEN new songs). Bet you didn't know he was a the long lost LAVA MAN before he met Luke! This song will not appear on the album, it is for Kickstarters only, each and every person who donates as little as $5 gets it! Beep Boop!
Here's the breakdown:
5 days at Seaside Studio in Brooklyn (plus shovels) - $500/day = $2500
Rewards/Artifact production/shipping (and de-cursing) = $500
Kickstarter's fee, taxes (plus donkeys) = $300
We Have Stretch Goals!
Rest assured, we can haz mighty Stretch Goalz!
(more wordy details if and when they hopefully become relevant, but in short: we want to record horn parts [which we have preemptively written!], we want to [gasp] pay our amazing artists, and we want to make a cool vinyl!)
Rewards are very rewarding:
A brief history of Uncle Monsterface...
Maybe you know Uncle Monsterface the sock puppet from Marty Allen's Sock Puppet Portraits? Last year Marty's Series 4 puppet Portraits got funded right here! Woo hoo! Marty also brought out a book, "Sock Puppet Madness", in which you can learn to make three of the LAVA MEN: The Ninja, SCUBA Diver, and Sports Robot, as well as the puppet Uncle Monsterface, and 31 other crazy puppet characters!
Uncle Monsterface the (human) BAND is almost a decade old (and our collective back hurts), and so far we've had a weird and wonderful career. This will be our seventh recording, but only our third full-length album. So it's kind of a big deal.
Uncle Monsterface is also: a giant dancing monster, a weird little sock puppet, an internet tee vee experience, and a power inside of all of us.
Over the years Monsterface has become as well-known for our crazy videos and insane, interactive, multimedia live show as we have for our actual rock songs. But we need new rock songs to make new craziness!
Here we are on-stage from the unforgettable Unlimited Enthusiasm Tour, performing the song we wrote for Madonna, "Like A Prayer" - wait for the MONSTER! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWNsq_lREC0
Here's a crazy video for the title track to our last full length release, "This Is an Adventure":
And here's one for "We Wear Capes" where you can see an early glimpse at Dino Skeleton Island! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVcQCeB85S8
We even made a soap opera! (obviously)
Thanks so much for your time and consideration. We really want to make this awesome album (and accompanying archaeological discoveries), and we can't do it without your help. We've been making this wacky dream of a band that is also a monster that is also a fake tee vee show that is and always will be exactly the creative beast that we want it to be for several millenia, and we couldn't have done it without our family of fanfriends. And if you've read this far, that is very probably YOU!
This is an "all-in" Kickstarter, so if we don't get to the first funding goal, nobody gets nuthin! Boo!
Any bit you can give counts, and what helps even more is you helping to spread the word! Tell the twiiterfaces!
KEEP BEING AWESOME!
Ever your loyal,
Risks and challenges
Outside of us falling into another cave, the album is definitely written and the studio time is locked in, so this thing is getting done!
When making rock albums and epic archaeological discoveries, everything takes time, so this and that simply getting gummed up is always a possibility that might cause delays. We'll get it all done, regardless, and keep you posted if we hit any snags.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
