In The Dutch East Indies, you are a captain in the 18th century and you have two ships and a clear mission. Collect desired spices, and do so before any other country does!
Now, you could just use the trading goods from your own country and try to trade the spices with locals. Or maybe you find it more satisfactory to simply fire away at your competitors and try to steal the spices they collected!
Upgrade your ships to get faster, stronger, or be able to carry more goods at a time. And beware of pirates, who do not care about spices but do care about sending your ships to the bottom of the sea!
Whoever collects the 8 desired spices the fastest wins!
1-4 can play The Dutch East Indies in about 45-90 minutes. There are two editions, the Standard edition and the Deluxe edition. The game is 100% language independent and comes with rules in English, German, Dutch, French, Spanish and Italian.
For more information on how The Dutch East Indies plays, please take a look at the original Kickstarter.
The Dutch East Indies got funded on Kickstarter in 2017, and is still selling strong. It’s nearing the end of its printrun. When we designed it, we had to cut some ideas out of the core game because otherwise it would have become too expensive of a game. But without them, it turned out that some more strategic players ended up missing something in the game. So we developed the original ideas, and added a few more to make The Dutch East Indies a game that more strategic players will also enjoy!
Adventures on the High Seas adds 6 modules to the core game. You can add a single module to the game, a few, or just throw them all in!
These are the new modules, as depicted on the top of the box, going clockwise:
1 – Forts. In the base game, you have to watch out for pirates and other players while sailing, and nothing else. When you deliver your spices back on your home island, they are safe. Now, not anymore… You start with a fort on your home island with which you can defend against other players trying to steal your spices. Pirates get 2 forts on the High Seas to aid them, but if you defeat them, you could own those forts!
2 – Settlements. Because this expansion comes with a lot more options to spend your gold on, it’s only fair that you also get the opportunity to earn more. You can now build settlements on wild islands with no cards left on them. The settlement will produce crates for you, and act as a harbor to protect you from attacks too!
3 – Treasures. Similarly to settlements, when you find a treasure, you find gold! Which aids you with modules 1 and 6.
4 – Events. No longer can you only draw trade propositions at wild islands. When you least expect it, lightning strikes! Or you summon the Kraken. Or who knows, something helpful may happen. It also means you can no longer safely look at the last card at an island. It may be an event, which means then the deck is empty and you can be attacked!
5- Reefs. Another danger on the High Seas for you, your opponents and the pirates! Are you going to be safe and sail around them, or take the risk and hope your ship passes safely through it? Getting stuck is no fun, except for when it happens to the pirates!
6- Crew. When an island runs out of trade cards in the base game, they are of no interest. Not anymore! You can now build settlements, but the locals on the island are also looking for something to do! Pay a local for their services and upgrade your ship in a whole new way! Just be careful in battles not to get your crew killed!
As Edo mentions in his video about Adventures on the High Seas (and rightfully so), the iconography on the player boards in the Dutch East Indies is not good. We were aware of this at the time of designing these, but reached the cut-off point to be in time for Essen and so we went with it. But now, we do have time and we redesigned them so they are clear! A new set of player boards comes in the box of expansion and also summarizes the expansion. This design is not final yet, if anything on it is not clear, please let us know in the comments!
Please note that Adventures on the High Seas is compatible with both the Standard and Deluxe editions of the core game. The only language dependency in the expansion is on the crew and event cards. At this time, this will be in English and Dutch. If you really would like this in another language, let us know in the comment section and we can see if we can incorporate this!
All Standard stretch goals from the original Kickstarter are included in both editions. All Deluxe stretch goals from the original Kickstarter are included in the Deluxe edition.

You can add-on any of our other games, or add more copies to your pledge. You can adjust your pledge accordingly, or pay the balance later in the Pledge Manager. We have just two prices for shipping; one copy of Adventures on the High Seas, and 'Shop till you drop'. This means flat rate shipping for any pledge that weighs more than 1 copy of the expansion (Not including retailer and group pledges, who pay shipping per case).
These Deluxe upgrades are already included in the Deluxe game. If you wish to upgrade your Standard edition with the Deluxe ships, you will also need the Deluxe coins and spices, as the Standard coins and spices do not fit in the Deluxe ships.
You can also add-on our 2018 games with a nice discount!
Or save €20/$31 on MSRP with a Mask Trilogy bundle (and enjoy flat rate shipping).
If you are a retailer, you can order Adventures on the High Seas, The Dutch East Indies and all our other games by selecting the 'Retail' pledge level. You will get 50% off MSRP on all our games with a MOQ of 6x Adventures on the High Seas. You will only pledge €10 now, and make your choice and pay your balance in the Pledge Manager. Shipping will also be calculated and charged in the Pledge Manager.
If you wish to make a Group Pledge, you can pledge at the 'Group Pledge' level. You will have to pledge for at least 6 copies of Adventures on the High Seas at 41% off MSRP. Please enquire about our discounts for bigger group pledges and/or prices for the Standard and/or Deluxe editions of the core game by sending an e-mail to email@example.com. You can add-on extra copies in the Pledge Manager and pay your balance as well as the shipping in there too.
We have got two flavours for you. A discounted shipping rate for 1 copy of Adventures on the High Seas, and a 'Shop till you drop' discounted rate that's valid for up to 20 kg. Please note these are still estimates. Shipping will be charged in the Pledge Manager when we know the final weights and shipping rates. We ship from within the EU and US, so there are no import taxes for you to pay. We will also waive import taxes for Canadian and Australian backers. Please note: these rates are only valid if you fill out your Pledge Manager in time. Actual shipping and handling rates will be charged when we have to ship out your pledge manually because you didn't fill out the Pledge Manager.
Non-EU European countries also count as ROW (rest of world) countries, but will end up at the lower end of the price bracket. Brexit impact on UK shipping rates is still unknown. For EU rates goes: the closer a country is to the Netherlands, the cheaper shipping will be. So expect €10 for Germany and Belgium, and €20 for Portugal, Sweden, Bulgaria etc. For ROW, the flat rate costs noted are for up to 5 kg. Add €25 for up to 10 kg.
You can also pick-up your pledge at Spiel Essen and other Dutch/Flamish fairs after Essen. This is free of shipping charges and will be an option in the Pledge Manager.
We will charge you shipping once for every case of 6 games, or once for up to 20 kg, whichever is cheaper. With large retail orders, we can also offer extra discounted shipping. Please note these are still estimates. Shipping will be charged in the Pledge Manager when we know the final weights and shipping rates. Notes listed at 'Single Pledges' above also apply here.
We are donating € 1 per game and € 0,50 per expansion we sell in 2019 to DCS (Dutch Cancer Society). Since Kickstarter doesn't allow charities, we are donating € 1 per game and € 0,50 per expansion sold in the Pledge Manager, so we don't violate their policy.
Risks and challenges
This is our fourth Kickstarter project, after Scuba, The Dutch East Indies and Tour Operator. All three were delivered to backers within a timely manner. This expansion is an easy project, with all artwork already made. We just need to make the game cards and then the game can already be off to the printer. Depending on the success of this Kickstarter, we will either fulfill the core games from our first printrun, or start a new one. If the latter, you can expect fulfillment around October, if the first, we may be able to fulfill quicker than that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
