About this project
A beautiful wild dolphin approaches humans for help escaping from a fishing line, then waits patiently while divers free him - and the whole encounter is caught on video.
Notch’s story instantly became a viral sensation - with over 30+ million views and counting. After being flooded with thousands of emails and positive feedback from around the world, the underwater camerawoman who filmed Notch’s rescue, Martina Wing, was inspired to share this uplifting, educational story with children.
Based on the video footage, the book follows Notch’s journey from playing with his family, through his entanglement with a fishing line, his search for help, and finally his rescue by scuba divers. This beautifully illustrated story teaches children trust, love, and hope- with an important message about conservation and environmental protection.
Notch’s story resonates- after all, he isn’t just another fictional cartoon character, but a real, wild, bottlenose dolphin living off the coast of beautiful Kona, Hawaii. And like all of the ocean’s residents, Notch is affected daily by the actions of humans in his environment.
In January 2013, a local dive team was swimming with manta rays off the Kona coastline. Divers and snorkelers bring powerful lights and cameras to enjoy observing the gentle, majestic mantas as they feed on plankton after dark.
On this night, the group was approached by a wild dolphin who swam closer and closer, moving among them without fear. The reason for this unusual dolphin behavior quickly became apparent when the injured dolphin turned toward one diver- to show him the fishing line that he was entangled in. A hook lodged in his pectoral fin had wrapped his head in fishing line, severely and dangerously restricting his ability to swim freely.
The dolphin paused near a dive master, who compassionately worked to remove the hook and line- saving Notch’s life. Luckily for all of us, the entire encounter was caught on video. The breathtaking footage- demonstrating the incredible power of trust and hope- was captured by Martina Wing.
Notch’s rescue continues to awe and inspire us all- fueling our hope for a better tomorrow, filled with peace and harmony between species.
* Notch is a REAL character children can identify with. His story sparks curiosity & wonder about marine life and habitats.
* Notch’s dilemma was caused by human carelessness. Children will learn the importance & responsibility we must all share for caring for the Earth’s environment.
* Notch’s request for help from humans demonstrates animal intelligence and courage. Kids will be inspired to understand that animals deserve compassionate treatment & consideration.
* Notch’s story combines kindness, cooperation, and respect with environmental issues and the need to live in harmony with all of Earth’s non-human inhabitants. The story becomes a springboard for a wide variety of important teachable moments, while remaining positive, uplifting & unforgettable.
"Notch, the rescued dolphin" is a full color hardcover book approximately 48 pages long. Written for ages 4-9, the story of Notch’s search for help introduces children to a variety of underwater characters- including sea turtles, fish, Hawaiian monk seals and manta rays, in addition to dolphins.
At the end of the book the author includes a brief synopsis of the true story of Notch’s rescue and a look behind the scenes. Children are also encouraged to learn more about marine conservation and ocean life.
"When the video of Notch’s rescue went viral online, I was overwhelmed with the amount of positive feedback that was shared with me from around the world. I received thousands of emails, comments and shares of this incredible story. I knew instinctively that the footage I was filming would touch people’s hearts, and I was humbled -and incredibly thankful- to have shared such an amazing moment.
I’ve devoted my entire career to educating and motivating others on how to honor, protect, and support our oceans and ecosystems. Reaching children with that message is a vital part of the conservation movement. Telling this story to kids is simply the perfect continuation of my life’s work.
My true passion is the Manta Rays, and Notch’s story has shone a light on issues that affect the Mantas as well. I am truly honored and excited that this rich story- filled with hope and joy, will leave you and your family feeling inspired to help protect marine life for years to come.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your support of this project. It is my sincere hope that the story of Notch will resonate and create positive change that will leave the Earth a better place for all of its inhabitants."

Risks and challenges
All projects have some level of risk, and ours is no different.
We have made every possible effort to layout the path in front of us, but to be honest there will unknown obstacles and we will do our best to overcome; after all it is my first book.
We have planned on a self-publishing path. With the illustrations being done 50%, we expect those to be completed by the end of summer. This will give us a 90-day window to bring the book from design to fulfillment, and delivery in December of 2017.
We are excited about this journey and appreciate your support. We do not expect delays, but anything can happen. We rely on our suppliers just as you rely on us, and hope for a relationship of mutual understanding. Thank you.
