About this project
(YOU DID IT!!!! Please check our "Updates tab" for more information.)
This is a participative art project with an educational component. We are building a MARS ROVER ART CAR that will be deployed at Burning Man 2013 and later to educate grade school children to promote Science and Permaculture Recycling/reutilization!
The Mars Rover Art Car is a labor of a love for science, art, playfulness, education, and above all the ability to DARE MIGHTY THINGS.
Based out of the Los Angeles area and built by a radically inclusive team, this is an endeavor unlike any art car thus far. Our crew consists of a group of talented craftspeople, artists, JPLiens, NASA brainiacs, and an ever growing supportive task force... and we call ourselves "The Desert Wizards of Mars."
This is a Kickstarter, private, and volunteer forged art car that would be an artistic "half steampunk" version of the Mars Curiosity Rover except built to hold 8 human passengers. The car will be one of the most technologically advanced cars as it will have functional remote sensors such as a weather station, GPS tracking, remote camera, soil/moop samples, permaculture cooking instruments, streaming interaction with Burners that couldn't attend, and crowd sourced navigation system, all based via the Internet.
On August 5, 2012, the employees at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory pulled off the most amazing technological feet in space exploration by safely landing a 1 ton rover on Mars. To pay tribute to their achievement, we want to build something special and educational for events like School Visits, Science Fairs, and Burning Man.
When the real astronauts do go to Mars, they too will need to recycle and conserve their supplies. The Mars Rover Art Car will feature a custom built "Rocket Stove" by permaculture artist Ray Cirino. The wood fired high tech stove will be used to cook grilled cheese sandwiches for native playaites and demonstrate the need to recycle and conserve to school children in our post playa school assemblies for permaculture education. We also are going to include science experiments of actual playa dust sample return for the students.
Like the real rovers, a project of this magnitude requires many different people with many different skills.
Construction has started with funds and materials on hand, but we need your help... Please check the updates section as we post progress photos.

This is an art project that is 100% citizen funded and there is no official relationship with Caltech, JPL or NASA. Any employees of the above organizations participating on the project do so as private citizens of the arts and do so on their own non-work time.
Risks and challenges
This is not the team's first rodeo... check out our Update #1 on the Human Spirit our members built. Also one of our lead members was also the lead builder on two other art cars, so we have the capability to do this.
While our budget is no where near the scale of the Mars Rover Curiosity Project, we still rely on the support of Burners and Non-Burners alike for mission success. This Kickoff Campaign is meant to help us jumpstart the progress we've made thus far on the small private funds we've utilized. Our $8,000 minimum would be accepted with love and appreciation, but the more funding we receive, the more awesome we can incorporate. Think additional scientific instruments, more infrastructure, and a longer life off playa. The initial $8000 will give us the ability to buy basic materials such as metal, hardware, specialized wheels, and all other generals to finish our basic shell, as well as provide funding for logistics. Future plans are in place for other fundraiser events and a future Kickstarter campaign after success of this Kickoff.
We thank anyone that donates anything at all, or those of you that just think this is a damn cool project. We do to, and we thrive off any type of support we get!
A lot of love, sweat, a little blood, but thankfully only tears of joy have gone into our project, and we won't quit 'till we're rocking out with our brethren on the Playa.
