Marloe Watch Company is an independent designer and producer of wrist watches based in Oxfordshire, England. They launched their first watch, the Cherwell, on Kickstarter in January 2016 to a fantastic reception.

The company’s values are strongly bound to tradition and design. And it's these values, along with a passion for timepieces, that inspired the creation of beautiful watches powered by manual, mechanical movements.

As watches get smarter, and lives more complicated, there is a movement embracing the slow-living counter culture, going back to the simple things, celebrating tradition. So as the technology brands fight it out over who makes the smartest watch, Marloe is proudly going against the grain to create the most traditional of all watches - the hand-wound timepiece.

The Lomond Chronoscope, from Marloe Watch Co.

Following on from our successful debut Kickstarter for the Cherwell, Marloe Watch Company is delighted to announce their follow-up campaign for the Lomond Chronoscope.

Named after one of Scotland's most famous Lochs, as well as countless cultural references, the Lomond expands the growing range of timepieces from MWC, which now includes the original Kickstarter campaign's Cherwell and the new smaller diameter Derwent.

Loch Lomond
Loch Lomond

The Lomond Chronoscope is a manual mechanical wristwatch that includes a “stop-watch” feature, a ceramic bezel insert and exhibition case-back. It is 43mm in diameter x 11mm high (13.6mm to crystal zenith), 46.6mm tip-to-toe and has a 22mm strap-width.

We wanted to create a timepiece with a foot in both the traditional and the contemporary; with a strikingly unique yet reassuringly familiar design. For the Lomond Chronoscope we kept some elements of our earlier designs whilst developing a timepiece that stands apart, not just within our own range but also within the market it exists. This is a more complex mechanical timepiece, offering both accurate timekeeping and time measurement, therefore the design needs to reflect the need for additional information, whilst remaining true to our core belief of essentials only, clutter free design.

The Lomond Chronoscope comes in 4 colour-ways, split into Classic and Vintage aesthetics. For the Classics there's a White and Grey dial, both with a Telemeter scale matt ceramic bezel. For the Vintage models, there's a Coffee and Vanilla dial with a simple 60 second scale polished ceramic bezel.

The Classic White dial features the same pearlescent white paint from the Cherwell but applied to a sandblasted surface to give a beautiful paper like texture with a semi-metallic sheen. The main printed markings are dark grey with red accents and the hour blocks are polished to match the hands - a classic combination. The Classic White has mirror polished main and sub-dial hands with a painted dark grey Chronoscope hand to match the outer markings.

The case, crown & pushers are mirror polished with a matt black ceramic bezel, Telemeter scale engraved and paint-filled white. The Classic White is fitted with a bold orange leather strap.

The Classic Grey is bold and refined. The dial is a charcoal grey, applied to a sandblasted surface to give a beautiful paper-like matt / semi-pearlescent finish. The main printed markings are in white with red accents, and the hour blocks are polished to match the hands.

The case, crown & pushers are bead-blasted, and the bezel matt black ceramic with white filled engraving for a wonderfully tactile utility feel. The polished hands contrast the dark grey dial to assist in quick time-reading. The Classic Grey is adorned with a matching dark grey leather strap.

Striking. Different. The Vintage Coffee has a luscious deep brown, almost black dial colour. In one light it appears a glossy inky black, helped with the reflection from the crystal. In another light and angle it's a flat espresso brown. The main printed markings are a combination of vintage cream with red and white accents; polished hour blocks match the polished hands. The sub-dials feature a turned brass aesthetic complementing the markings, with a vintage cream Chronoscope hand completing the look.

The case is polished to a mirror shine, with matching crown and pushers. The Vintage cases feature a polished black ceramic bezel with a 60 second gradation scale engraved and paint-filled white. The Vintage Coffee is fitted with a black leather strap, contrasting white stitching and brass rivets to compliment the sub-dials.

If the Classic White dial is just too classic, and you want something subtly different, the Vintage Vanilla is the one for you. A beautiful vanilla pearlescent dial shimmers in the changing light, from deep warm grey in lower light to a bright radiating off-white in lighter environments. A combination of vintage cream and dark grey accents keep the dial subtle yet still easily readable. Dark grey painted hour blocks stand proud from the lower surface. Polished main and sub-dial hands match up with a dark grey Chronoscope hand to tie everything together.

The case is again polished with matching crown and pushers, with the deep glossy inky black ceramic bezel with engraved white markings. The Vintage Vanilla is strapped with dark brown leather, contrast white stitching and brass rivets to complete the vintage range.

Stretch Goal #2 - Special Edition

The Special Edition dial features the same pearlescent white paint from the Classic White dial and applied to a sandblasted surface to give the same beautiful paper like texture with a semi-metallic sheen. The sub-dials are the inverse of the dial, or Panda as it’s called. The outer ring minute markings are red, with dark grey 1/5th seconds markings. The hour blocks are polished to match the hands, as are the main and sub-dial hands, whereas the Chronoscope hand is painted red to match the outer markings.

Stretch Goal #2 - £200,000 - A Special Edition Panda dial exclusively available to Backers

The case, crown & pushers are mirror polished with a matt black ceramic bezel, Telemeter scale engraved and paint-filled white. The Special Edition is fitted with a matching Grey leather strap.

Please note - the Special Edition imagery is for illustration purposes only. The dial is yet to go into production so we do not have any further images at this time.

The movement within the Lomond is a special one; it has history. Originally developed by Fabrique d'Ebauches Venus S.A in the 1940's, the Venus 175 was used in many high-end timepieces, most notably by Breitling. Soon this 175 Caliber was copied by a Russian firm and came to be known as the Strela. When Venus decided that they wanted to develop a new movement, the 180, they went looking for buyers for their Venus 175 caliber.

The Lomond Display Back

The Soviets didn't want it - they had their cloned Strela movement, but the Chinese just so happened to be looking for a movement to install in a new pilot's watch for their air force. Venus sold everything to the Chinese - machinery included. After the war the caliber soon filtered down to consumer watches and has ultimately become the Seagull ST19.

In part, due to the history and background, the ST19 still shares the robustness and accuracy of the Venus 175, which is why we've chosen it for the Lomond Chronoscope.

Polished Case
Polished Case

The case has been designed with a few goals - firstly to cradle the complicated mechanical movement efficiently, presenting its visual complexity and remaining as slim as possible. The second was to design a case that sits beautifully on the wrist, tucks neatly under a shirt or cuff and is easy to operate when wrist-borne. Third the case was to feel robust and solid but not overly cumbersome. The result is a case tapering from a diameter of 38mm at the case-back, to 43mm at the edges of the static bezel. At 11mm deep, the case sits unobtrusively on the wrist.

With the lugs bending downwards, coupled with the restrained 46.6mm top-to-toe measurement, the Lomond sits comfortably on the wrist. The signature crown and Chronoscope pushers are supported with small flats which mould out from the case seamlessly, with the bezel nestled within a thin steel frame.

High Dome Acrylic Crystal
High Dome Acrylic Crystal

Few things go together better than polished stainless steel and black ceramic. Whilst steel is inherently surgical and clean, ceramic has a depth and warmth that other treated or coated materials can't replicate - it's also incredibly strong in compression and remarkably scratch resistant. We have chosen to use both matt and polished black ceramic for our Lomond range, and they do a great job of proportioning out the dial and case to keep the Lomond from feeling too big.

The hidden gem, the resplendent secret. There’s something palpable about a reaction to the Lomond Chronoscope's exhibition case-back, when turned over to reveal the open window to the heart within. The oscillating balance wheel and hairspring gently bouncing back and forth; the three central wheels all moving in sync; the warm shimmer of gold, blue and ruby all encapsulated under the sapphire crystal case-back. It all adds up to a visual spectacle unlike most others.

Perimeter printing on the underside of the crystal reveals a few details whilst adding its own interest; an inverse print of transparent text within a black border. A true showpiece, hidden when in use but gloriously revealed at your choosing.

A quote from poet and lyricist, Robert Burns, from his 1790 narrative poem, Tam o' Shanter, continues the Scottish inspiration for the Lomond.

Double O-Ring Crown
Double O-Ring Crown

Our watches need input from you to keep them alive - that's the joy of manual winding movements; turning the crown keeps the engine ticking. For the Lomond Chronoscope the crown retains the outline form and scalloped & engraved end-cap from the Cherwell, but halves the number of grooves in the surface to compliment the more contemporary design, whilst keeping the grip required to turn it. The crown features a double o-ring construction allowing a tight seal to be formed against any rogue splashes.

High Dome Acrylic Crystal
High Dome Acrylic Crystal

Acrylic Crystal. Robust, durable and repairable; it's something of a touchy subject in the watch world. For some the relative susceptibility to scratches is a negative. We think not - it may take a scuff easier than say mineral or sapphire crystal, but unlike the latter two options, acrylic crystals can be polished to remove these scratches easily. It doesn't matter if it's 1 day old or 1 year old; a dab of Polywatch or swipe of a Cape-Cod cloth and the crystal can be refreshed to brand new.

Acrylic also has a warm, vintage aesthetic that just can't be replicated with other forms of crystal. It's also light, can be moulded in to pretty much any shape and is easily replaceable.

Sapphire crystal was explored but the cost to produce this custom profile would have significantly impacted the affordability, and a redesign to allow for standard double-domed sapphire crystal would have made the Lomond significantly thicker - a compromise too far.

The Lomond crystal achieves a few things. Firstly, it limits the height of the watch by having a top-hat style profile - tall at the edges, flat in the middle. We've put a large radius on the outer edge that directly coincides with the Chronoscope track below, resulting in a wonderful magnifying effect. This elongates the minute markers from the outer Chronoscope track, whilst disguising the smaller 1/5th second markers. This not only makes reading the time at a glance exceptionally easy, but it adds an extra element of dynamic when you rotate the timepiece around and watch the light refraction play off the surface.

Refractions
Refractions

The dial continues the standout feature of our Cherwell design, with a double layered dial and sharply recessed sub-dials. The metal hour blocks are positioned to extend out from the upper level, adding a sharp metallic line in amongst the beautiful pearlescent paint.

Markings are kept to essentials and the functions separated with the 2 layers. The bottom, outer layer features the Chronoscope seconds track, with each second segmented 5 times to capture the 1/5th second accuracy.

The upper layer has minimal markings, with only small pips of Superluminova to point you towards the hours. A double pip at 12 helps with orientation in the twilight. The sub-dials are framed with the corresponding markings for the function - the running seconds sub-dial has 60 markings, with 4 bolder markings at the main quadrants. The 30 minute timer has 30 markings, with bolder markings at each 5 minute interval. Within the sub-dials are numerals for ease of reference.

Legibility is essential, which is why the Lomond has simple polished hands, infilled with Superluminova. A long, thin, counter-weighted Chronoscope second-hand is poised ready for action, the tip coated with Superluminova. The sub-dials use the same polished hands from the Cherwell, a nod to its predecessor.

When day turns to night you want to still be able to read the time, so the Lomond Chronoscope features Superluminova C3 on the hands and dial. Small pips arrayed around the upper level at the hourly markers make time-telling quick and easy - a double pip at 12 o’clock orients the watch easily. The Chronoscope hand features a lume tip. Both hour and minute hands are infilled with Superluminova C3.

Orange Calfskin Leather with Croc Print
Orange Calfskin Leather with Croc Print

We wanted a bold set of straps to match the bold design of the Lomond, and as such we have 4 straps - 2 for the Classics, 2 for the Vintage. The Classic models get a padded orange and a grey strap using genuine calf leather with embossed croc texture. The Vintage models have brass rivets through genuine brown and black calf leather, with a lovely bold grain and contrasting stitching. Generously thick at 4mm.

Risks and challenges

MWC have now completed 3 manufacturing cycles, with the Lomond being the 4th. For the production of the Lomond Chronoscope we have allocated contingency timings to soak up any delays, however there are often unforeseen circumstances that impact the scheduling of any production. We will of course keep our backers up to date with any and all implications.

Being open and transparent about our production was a hallmark of our first campaign, and this time is no exception.
