When Angie Miranda first awakens onboard the Horizon, she notices something seems a bit…off. After taking her first initial steps outside her cryosleep pod, she discovers her crew mates have died in their sleep, and all the food onboard the ship is beyond expired. As she explores, she discovers that the ship has undergone a fatal mission error and they’ve not only overshot their mission to Pluto—but they’ve endured 60 years of directionless drift. As Angie tries to overcome the fatal scenario she’s found herself in, she reflects back on the life she gave up on Earth in pursuit of this mission.
What is it about?
We Choose To Go is a story about the sacrifices we make in our everyday lives in order to work towards our dreams. It’s about the uncertainty and the regret we may feel after making a huge decision at the cost of our personal ties and relationships. It’s a story about the urge to explore and fulfill our own dreams, and the people who stand behind us cheering us on while we do. It’s ultimately a question we all face when we make any big decisions: is it worth the sacrifice?
About our Crew
We are a collective of passionate young filmmakers. And as you may have noticed, we have a mostly female led film. We all come from distinctly different backgrounds that somehow found our way to England.
DIRECTOR: Marlene Emilia Rios
Originally from Southern California, Marlene bounced around from city to city within the United States as a child wondering where she would land. As an adult, she is now a graduate of the University of New Mexico with a BFA in Film & Digital Media and a current MA student at the London Film School and still curious about where she'll land. Her 16mm directorial debut 'SANGRE' was an Official Selection of the San Pedro International Film Festival 2017, and explored the theme of 'unconditional love' and raised the question 'could you love someone after learning the ugliest truth about them?' As she continues directing, she hopes to improve her skills in telling stories that are deeply personal and to continue to ask tough questions through her work.
PRODUCER: Aroonsri Khamsamran
Aroonsri is a graduate of the University of New Mexico’s Interdisciplinary Film and Digital Media program. She has recently completed her through-hike of 2,650 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail and is now back in civilization. She’s produced FEMME, WAKE and Mud (Hashtł’ishnii) an official selection for 2018 Sundance Film Festival. She will flew in to London all the way from Albuquerque, New Mexico to make the studio portion of ‘We Choose To Go’ happen!
PRODUCER: Jamie Forrest
Jamie graduated with an honours degree in Contemporary Screen Acting from the University of the West of Scotland. He has co-produced the short films ‘Deadly Ground’ and ‘Complex’ which won best Noir Thriller at Brighton Rocks film festival. In addition to producing, Jamie is also an actor and writer and will be playing the role of Commander Reed (one of Angie’s crewmates) in the film!
DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY: Hsien-Yu Niu (Sunshine)
Hsien Yu is a cinematographer from Taiwan. While she was in Taiwan she got sponsored by the Forestry Bureau of Taiwan and the Ministry of Science and Technology to create documentaries and short films. She is now graduating from the London Film School as a Cinematographer, and has shot various projects around the world from the UK all the way to Morocco, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.
PRODUCTION DESIGNER: Emily Marquet
Emily hails from Washington, DC, USA. She loves Shakespeare and in a former life, was an actress and theatre director working and living in NYC, South Africa and Haiti. She turned to the dark side of filmmaking somewhere along the journey. She designed the upcoming feature Demon, as well as two other short films and a webseries. She has worked in the art department on The Crown (Season 3) and Slaughterhouse Rulez as well as countless short films. She produced the successful web series Solid 8 and directed the documentary ZERO which premiered exclusively on Upgreen.TV in France.
Where is the money going?
We've already shot the studio portion of the film, and have shot all of the space elements of the story. We are looking to raise £2,200 for this campaign in order to now fund the location portion of the shoot, aka Angie's life here on Earth. By donating you are enabling a young and passionate group of filmmakers to showcase their skills and tell a truly emotional story.
What do you get?
We have so many awesome rewards for our backers. From our personal favorites like downloadable concept art for the film created by artists Eric Geusz and Adriano Rudiman to exclusive online screenings, posters designed by our director to a 'We Choose To Go' t-shirt! Check out the rewards and see what piques your interest!
What We've Done Already
We constructed a purpose built spaceship set, and shot a lot of the film inside Stage B at the London Film School. We shot everything from Angie emerging from the cryosleep pod, to the shuttle launch sequence for the film.

Risks and challenges
There is no doubt that our major challenge will be the financial hurdle to pay for production. Without this, we can't bring the ship to life, and the world Angie inhabits.
We live in a world where audiences are increasingly familiar with the sci-fi genre and what they expect to see on screen. So we have to work hard to get it right and make it authentic so we can engage you emotionally. In order to do that, we need spending money to make this look good.
We are a determined crew with plenty of experience producing films with little to no budget. Armed with the know-how of how to make a little go a long way, the resolve to produce a great film, and your support—we believe we can make this a truly fantastic short for all of us.
