What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

Woo!! Stretch Goals!!!!

Stretch Goal 1: $8,500 - Let’s Pair! 4 – Pairing To The People!
Backers, friends and workshop participants kept saying, “We love pairing! How do we get more pairing on our teams?” and after we answered them they would ask “Why isn’t this in your zines?!?”

So now they are! Let’s Pair! 4 - Pairing To The People! Helps novice and advanced pair programmers alike learn how to effectively introduce their peers and colleagues to the joy of pairing.

If (When!) we reach $8,500 in pledges before October 4th, every reward package that includes all three zines will also be given a free, corresponding copy (or copies) of Pairing To The People! For those who have purchased only a single zine, you will be able to totally choose it as a reward. What luck!

Stretch Goal 2: $12,000 - Let’s Pair! sticker sheet and Let’s Pair! Pair Adventurers Workbook - Cover your laptop in fun stickers showing how much you love pairing!

If we reach $12,000 before October 4th, every reward package that includes a physical copy or copies of the zines will also receive a cool sticker sheet. If you are not already at a reward level that includes physical copies of the zines, upgrade to a reward level that does for these fun stickers!

Have you ever wished there was a way for you to add a bit of giggly chaos to your pairing experiences? What about record the highlights from your excursions? The Let’s Pair! Pair Adventurers Workbook contains a myriad of exercises for you to explore with your pair partner, as well as prompts to help you track your pairing skills as they develop.

If we reach $12,000 before October 4th, every reward package that includes all three zines will also be given a corresponding copy (or copies) of the Pair Adventurers Workbook. Unfortunately, this workbook will not be selectable for those who picked a single zine package… So upgrade to a full set today!

Why Pairing?

Pair programming is well-known as a way to speed up development, write better code and increase collective ownership of code on a team. Pairing is also a great way to help a team of people get to know each other at the level of writing code.

We will show you how to set up pair programming, and, more importantly how to keep going with it.

Just as every worthwhile coding practice has its challenges, pair programming comes with it’s own set of potential problems. We will examine some different ways that pair programming can go wrong and how to change things up so that it’s more fun.

From the organizers of Pear Conf

Marlena, Jennifer and Betsy have worked at companies such as IBM, Pivotal, ActBlue and One Medical Group. Each has experienced pair programming in a variety of different environments on different types of teams.

Risks and challenges

Risks:
The largest risk is having all 3 zines finished, edited and published by January, but there are 3 of us working together. The more backers we get, the more of that time we can dedicate to working on these zines.

An additional risk is getting the plushy pear manufactured in the midst of the holiday season. We've been talking to different manufacturers about the process and all assure us that the pear, itself, is a pretty simple plush to make. The manufacturer we choose will depend on the number of backers as some require a minimum of 1000 pears (picture it! 1000 plush pears..whoa!!!) while other manufacturers are willing to do a minimum of 250 pears.
