You’ll get to see every type of pitch as thrown by the best in the game: fastballs, curves, sliders, change-ups, and even screwballs and knuckle balls, all in the immersive 3D world. You can train against every level of pitcher from high school level through MLB Hall of Fame quality. 

Your batting practice pitcher has a sore arm?  Practice has been rained out? It’s the middle of winter? None of these are problems with PITCHvr.

PITCHvr is an acronym for Perceptual Image Trainer for the Complete Hitter in the virtual realm.

"PITCHvr IS A VIRTUAL REALITY TRAINING SYSTEM THAT will allow baseball players at any level to enter a virtual batter’s box and train against accurate recreations of the pitching that they will face in their game  today or in the future.   PITCHvr IS FOR PLAYERS AT ALL SKILL LEVELS. Even Pros can improve by training with pitches not yet seen at the MLB level.  The training sharpens the batter’s skills in pitch recognition and strike zone location. The system also evaluates the hitter’s timing, body mechanics, and eye tracking  of the ball. Launch angle – yes, PITCHvr can measure it. The primary focus of PITCHvr is for training anywhere with commercially available head mounted dislays (HMDs). However, training can be conducted in a virtual reality CAVE environment or on the  ball field while wearing augmented reality headsets. 

Envision facing a 105 MPH sinker by Jordan Hicks but thrown by a neighbor of yours at your local ball park (illustrated below).   With PITCHvr, now you can!  PITCHvr is the ultimate backyard baseball game fantasy. The current PITCHvr prototype (PITCHvr Vision) is used on a regular basis by division one NCAA college players and has been demonstrated to several MLB teams.  PITCHvr provides perceptual image training for a hitter through the use of various visual assets, soundscapes, and haptic feedback so as to enhance a player's recognition of the strike zone, location of a pitch, and type of pitch.  There are no limits as to how the training experience can be varied and analyzed. 

Eye trackers in the headsets provide analytics on the hitter's eye movements.  A variety of sensing technologies are integrated into the system to evaluate a hitter's body and swing mechanics. Physically realistic pitch data sets have been created through the use of the equations of motion which take into account the effects of gravity, drag, and spin (Magnus force) on the baseball.  Any type of pitch by any pitcher can be accurately created in the virtual world.  The positions, velocities, accelerations, and spin axis orientations are accurately reproduced as a function of time. Pitcher avatars with realistic mechanics down to the finger positions  have been created for the animations to provide the player with an experience as close as possible to the real world. Why Kickstarter?

“A successful Kickstarter campaign will allow us to get the training system into your hands.  Your contributions will allow us to commercialize the system and launch our company, MARKxr (https://markxr.com/)." Currently, it is being used by student athletes and developed by researchers on Villanova University’s campus.  We want to move the system off campus and into homes and training facilities throughout the baseball world. With your financial help we will be able to improve the user interface; add to our several existing training scenarios; gamify the system to make it more fun and productive.  We will also add a realistic physics system so that when you swing and connect with the ball you can immediately see the results of your training – swing batter!  

A successful campaign will provide the necessary seed money to commercialize the existing product and produce future prototypes, such as PITCHvr Hitter, PITCHvr Catcher, and PITCHvr Umpire. The funds will also be used to pay for the license fees needed to distribute our PITCHvr software and provide the initial R&D funds for the PITCHxr product line for the extended realm.

Reward Offerings on Kickstarter

The various levels of the offered rewards will provide a MLB fan experience to everyone where the user can face the fastest and nastiest pitches as seen by MLB players (Level 1), and for the serious baseball player, a vision training experience at either the high school or college level (Levels 2 through 6).  For groups, teams, and training centers, we offer additional pitch data sets and training capabilities in Level 7 for the first 50 organizations who would like to be part of this campaign.  HTC VIVE, HTC VIVE Pro, HTC VIVE Pro Eye, Oculus Rift, and Oculus Rift S headsets are used to view these experiences.  Therefore, whether you are just a fan or a serious amateur player, we have a baseball hitter's experience for you.

Level 1 - MLB Fan Experience

The stereo video shows a Justin Verlander 83 MPH curveball.  A bat asset is mapped onto a controller asset to give the user a greater sense of being inside the virtual ballpark. Versions of the PITCHvr system in 2020 will map an avatar of the user into the virtual scene to give the user an even greater sense of being there.

Highest Levels (6 and 7) - Video of what a user experiences when training and using voice recognition capabilities

A VIVE Pro video segment of an actual user's Location Zone (L Zone) Recognition Training session using Voice Recognition capabilities is shown. The software is used to record and score a user's performance.  The level of difficulty varies with user performance so as to provide an optimal training experience.  Two L Zones (2 and 5) are highlighted in this training example.  The ball will cross through either one of these two zones.  The user can select the possible zones that the ball may cross through in the training session. The 70 MPH curveball traveled through L Zone 2 and the user's response as the ball crossed home plate was 2. The user's response is recorded and scored.

My Journey with PITCHvr so far

I am a passionate baseball fan who has both played and coached the game of baseball. I am a full-time college professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at Villanova University. In 2015, I was the first professor on campus to use our new virtual reality CAVE facility (  https://www1.villanova.edu/villanova/artsci/ceet/cave.html ) to conduct classroom exercises. A light bulb went on in my head, and I thought, wouldn't this CAVE facility make a great venue to train the vision of athletes. I started toying with the idea of a baseball hitter application. However, I immediately realized that not many people or even organizations have access to a $1.6 Million CAVE. Consequently, I decided to make a version for commercial headsets such as the Oculus and HTC Vive.

The application took me two years to develop and then I showed it to Villanova’s baseball coach, former major league pitcher Kevin Mulvey. I demonstrated an initial prototype of the system in the CAVE. I recreated pitches that Coach Mulvey threw when he pitched for the Diamondbacks. I also showed him pitches by Aroldis Chapman, the 103 MPH hurler, that I recreated. I was able to accurately recreate Chapman’s pitches, and I can do the same for virtually any pitch thrown in the MLB over the past 10 years.  Coach Mulvey loved the prototype, and we began the testing, refinement, and training of Villanova’s baseball players. 

Along this journey, I have given demonstrations to and had discussions with five MLB teams. I have even had discussions with MLB umpire development about the use of PITCHvr for umpire training. Through the many positive experiences that I have encountered because of PITCHvr, I have learned that I need help from the Kickstarter community to take this technology to an affordable, commercial level.  Please join me as I continue this journey to create a true game-speed training tool for baseball hitters, catchers, and umpires whether it be on the field, in a training center, or at home. Thank you.

Risks and challenges

The risk is minimal since eight different training and recognition apps are already built into the existing software that has been tested through the training of division one NCAA college players. This fan experience on Kickstarter is derived from the same code used to develop the PITCHvr Vision training software.

The funds from Kickstarter will allow the system to be enhanced with additional training scenarios and pitch data sets. Also planned is the porting of the software to the Unity language and installation and testing with several models of VR headsets. Like any software product development effort, issues could occur.

Please note that to run the PITCHvr executable code, the end user will need either a HTC VIVE, HTC VIVE Pro, HTC VIVE Pro Eye, Oculus Rift, or Oculus Rift S system with a computer capable of running software on their VIVE or Rift system. After starting SteamVR or Oculus Software, the supplied executable code is run to create either the fan experience or training experience on the VIVE or Rift.
