The Last Days of Anglekite, a Chaos World from Magpie Games

$17,372

Thanks to our wonderful backers, we were able to fund three whole Chaos Worlds: The Last Days of Anglekite, The Cold Ruins of Lastlife, and The Green Law of Varkith. Each book is a standalone setting for Dungeon World, ready to pick up and play with plenty of holes for the PCs and DM to fill in during play. If you'd like to order a copy for yourself, please visit the Magpie Games website for more information. Thank you!

The ground trembled. The water in the pig's trough spilled out of its tray, and as it did Drem saw it turn to blood. The pigs were squealing madly, and spiders began to pour out of their mouths. Drem screamed. Dark magic, ill omens – the end, finally arrived. But some part of the farmer's brain demanded that he run, as if he could somehow escape the death of the world.

If only his feet could carry him far enough away.

He reached the edge of his lands before he heard the crash, and he was driven to his feet by the ground's quaking. And as his eyes looked up over the treeline, he saw the monster's head, just peeking above the tree tops. Still far away, and yet visible over the mighty oak trees that grew near Fellbit Steading. Enormous. Dripping decay and corruption. With eyes full of a cold, otherworldly hate.

Drem screamed again... and didn’t stop.

The world is old. It has seen empires come and go. Its end approaches, and everyone knows it. Not least the residents of the last great mortal city—Anglekite, located in the Crater Basin.

Maybe the end will come in the form of the Scourge Karkis, the corrupted giant marching toward Anglekite to exterminate life out of a sense of mercy. Maybe it will come in the form of the Things From Outside, hoping to crack into this world and consume it entire. Or maybe it will come in the form of the Pyrewyrm, the massive fire dragon that is the death of the world embodied.

There are ways to fight the end. But each has its own cost. Draw in the corruption of the Things From Outside and grow powerful—and warped. Ask a boon of the demons of Pandemonium, and have demonic flesh grafted to your body. Wield the Angelbone Blade and smite your foes... and the world... with each swing.

Will the members of the Anglekite Adventurer's Guild be able to stave off their world's death? What terrible powers will they call upon in defense of their city? What price are they willing to pay for this dying world?

The Last Days of Anglekite is a Dying Earth-style weird fantasy setting for Dungeon World in which you play members of the Anglekite Adventurer's Guild, the last line of defense for a dying world threatened by catastrophic powers. The Last Days of Anglekite draws from weird sword and sorcery tales and over-the-top fantasy by authors like Jack Vance, Clark Ashton Smith, and Michael Moorcock.

The Last Days of Anglekite started as a PDF-only reward for backers of the Kristacon NYC event in April of 2013, a short Dungeon World scenario based on the adventure that Brendan Conway put together for the convention. But when Brendan turned in a 40,000 word document, it was the beginning of something greater and we decided to make The Last Days of Anglekite a standalone project. Through the efforts of Brendan, Mark Diaz Truman, Juan Ochoa, John Adamus, and Nathan Paoletta, it’s finally ready as a fantastic, fully laid-out setting book full of art, monsters, compendium classes, magic items, fronts, dangers, and madness.

The Last Days of Anglekite uses the Dungeon World system. You can read more about the system, and you can even find the free SRD onlineThe Last Days of Anglekite takes the system into the realm of weird, epic fantasy. The Last Days of Anglekite has the monsters, magical items, compendium classes, and fronts you need to play a full campaign of Dungeon World in a world built on top of the ruins of countless civilizations.

The Crater Basin is an enormous and fertile river valley, filled with forests, rivers, roads, cities, lakes, and more. The walls of the crater are enormous and imposing, sloped upwards and next to impossible to traverse without reliable climbing equipment. These walls isolated and protected the Basin over the years.

The massive Basin is littered with the remains of civilizations and empires long past, stretched across a blasted and violent landscape that seems endless. Layer upon layer of debris, detritus, and relics are there for the adventurer who knows where to look.

Within the Crater Basin lies the last great mortal city—Anglekite itself. Anglekite is devoted to greed and to pleasure, but even so it is the last true bastion of civilization in this dying world. And it is threatened on all sides.

The Crater Basin’s sights and monuments are nothing compared to the creatures that currently call it home. The Last Days of Anglekite provides you with a mess of strange and horrible monsters that inhabit these twisted lands.

Yet, these are not simply foes that can be defeated completely with the swing of an axe or the casting of a spell. Each of the monsters are tied directly into the myriad fronts presented in the book. Some of these monsters might be the best hope the adventurers have for salvation.

It is no wonder that there any number of ways that the Crater Basin might come to doom. Perhaps the Archlich will finish its ritual and drain the life from the Basin entirely. Perhaps the alien sorcerer Cray Def Un will steal the vital artifacts the people of the Basin need to defend themselves, leaving them helpless against the onslaught.

The Last Days of Anglekite provides many adventure fronts, and each one details a connected series of antagonists and dangers to Anglekite, the Crater Basin, and the world. GMs can pick out their own mix of threats to tailor the setting to their pleasure. Will the PCs hold the line and keep back the end of the world? And if they do ... what price will they pay for victory?

The weirdness of the Crater Basin isn’t just there for players to fight or oppose. They can let it in, and partake of its power. Compendium classes offer players the means to become strong and strange. Each compendium class outlines specific actions that allow an adventurer access to its powers and gives them new moves that make those powers matter. They offer another route for players to play with the sandbox that is the Crater Basin—or not! Part of the fun is seeing if players are willing to sacrifice their identity for the pursuit of power.

The Crater Basin is filled with the ruins and detritus of the countless civilizations that came before. That includes the myriad artifacts, technologies, inventions, and magic gewgaws that they've created, most of them locked in ancient vaults or buried in the sands of time. The Last Days of Anglekite details an array of these toys. Some are useful, and some are cursed, but powerful.

Above them all is the Angelbone Blade, carved from the bone of the last seraph, inscribed with the runic names of the Elder Children, and bathed in the angel’s silver blood. The only weapon strong enough to save the world. The only weapon dangerous enough to destroy everything.

The Last Days of Anglekite is full of weird, strange, and horrifying ideas, but there's plenty more to come. We want to create a line of standalone Dungeon World settings called Chaos Worlds, each one a unique and stylized land with its own rules and techniques for creating weird fantasy stories using Dungeon World.

Towers extending up to the sky, made of alabaster, with gold filigree. Beautiful statues of gods and angels and heroes and kings. A people who found their deeds on a philosophy of hope. A civilization at the summit of its majesty.

All of it long gone.

The Cold Ruins are all that’s left. Broken towers. Shattered statues. Creeping undead vines grown over beautiful edifices. And the people… ruined. Lastlife is populated only with the undead, husks of what came before clinging to a horrible half-life. Their memories lost and gone. Their past glory, vanished.

In The Cold Ruins of Lastlife, you’ll play an undead remnant of a once-great world. Find your lost memories as you sift through the ashes, or pave a new path, cutting a swath of burning light into a hopeful future, and leave the past—and your memories—behind forever. The Cold Ruins of Lastlife lets you play undead adventurers trying to find something to fight for—the past or the future—in this cold and dreadful world. Hunt for a new flame. Or try to recall why your flame burned bright in the first place. The Cold Ruins of Lastlife is heavily inspired by Dark Souls, along with works such as Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast series and Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities.

The Green Law of Varkith is a Chaos World about a great city that stands defined by a single idea: guilds. Varkith is governed by the Green Law, implemented by the Green Lady who tied her life force to the city to save it and restore it to glory after it was ravaged by Heroes. The Green Law states that no one in Varkith can ever be independent; everyone must be part of something greater than themselves.

In The Green Law of Varkith, Brendan will give you rules and tools for creating your own guild within Varkith’s frightening jungle of organizations. You’ll have to defend your federation from would-be predators and rivals, taking it up the ranks so it can become one of the leading guilds of the entire city. The Green Law of Varkith is all about adventuring in the city to boost your own guild’s standing, while avoiding the hungry and dangerous guilds already populating Varkith, from the Butcher’s Society to the Artist’s Collective to the News Guild.

Goal #1: $3,500 (UNLOCKED!) - Setting & Basic Moves for The Cold Ruins of Lastlife.

Goal #2: $5,000 (UNLOCKED!) - Monsters for The Cold Ruins of Lastlife.

Goal #3: $6,500 (UNLOCKED!) - Magic Items and Compendium Classes for The Cold Ruins of Lastlife

Goal #4: $8,000 (UNLOCKED!) - Fronts and GM Advice for The Cold Ruins of Lastlife. Since we've reached $8,000, The Cold Ruins of Lastlife will be a full book-length PDF of comparable length to The Last Days of Anglekite, including setting material, basic rules tweaks, monsters, artifacts, compendium classes, and more! Everybody who's pledged $10 or more will be getting that full PDF along with The Last Days of Anglekite.

What's more, because we've hit $8,000, then The Cold Ruins of Lastlife will be available for purchase as a softcover book! It will be a $25 add-on, and will be in the same 6 x 9 in. form as The Last Days of Anglekite. The book will contain all the unlocked text, along with Juan Ochoa's amazing art!

Goal #5: $9,500 (UNLOCKED!) - Setting & Basic Moves for The Green Law of Varkith

Goal #6: $11,000 (UNLOCKED!)- Monsters for The Green Law of Varkith

Goal #7:$12,000 (UNLOCKED!) - Compendium Classes and Magical Items for The Green Law of Varkith

Goal #8: $13,000 (UNLOCKED!)- GM Advice and Fronts for The Green Law of Varkith, along with a full print run! Because we've reached this stretch goal, we’ll be printing The Green Law of Varkith, complete with setting information, monsters, artifacts, compendium classes, and more, in a softcover 6”x9” book, the same in form factor as the other two Chaos Worlds. It’ll be available as a $25 add-on, same as The Cold Ruins of Lastlife.

And here’s the kicker: We're now offering a deal for anyone who wants all three physical softcover books! Just $65 plus shipping for all three! Check out the Champion of the Spheres reward level!

Goal #9: $15,000 (UNLOCKED!) - New Custom Character Sheets! The original Dungeon World playbooks are awesome for a basic game of Dungeon World, but Chaos Worlds are a whole new kind of madness. If we reach $15,000, we’ll publish three new character sheets on the Magpie Games website, each one customized for a specific Chaos World!

Brendan ran a demo game of The Last Days of Anglekite and recorded it! It shows off a bit about the kinds of characters you’d see in Anglekite and how an adventure can get started. Check it out!

Thanks to the players: Andrea Gaulke, Matt Holland, and Ben Rose!

The Last Days of Anglekite was originally written to be used in a LongCon game. Imagine running a game for 15 players with 2 other GMs over the course of 3 sessions. Imagine your players making decisions on Friday that culminate in epic battles on Sunday. Imagine a month’s worth of gaming in a weekend. That’s a LongCon.

It’s a game format designed to pack the character development of a full campaign into a multi-session, multi-table, and multi-GM convention game. The first LongCon was KristaCon, named for and inspired by Krista White, and run by Brennan Taylor, Michael O’Sullivan, and John Stavropolous. Since then, the LongCon community has put together games across many different conventions and systems, building on the lessons we’ve learned from the past.

The Last Days of Anglekite contains some of the first codified advice and guidelines for running a LongCon. While the community has been developing techniques ever since the very first Kristacon, The Last Days of Anglekite will provide you guidelines based on our accumulated learning, including how to prepare for a LongCon and techniques you can use to facilitate your own sessions.

Brendan will also work with you to create a compendium class for a future Chaos World of your choice. Brendan will also work with you to create a seed for a whole new Chaos World, a 5,000 word strange and epic setting based on your own ideas. You’ll work together to create the world, its compendium classes, its monsters, its fronts and dangers, and its magic items, ultimately creating a Chaos World of at least 5,000 words. We’ll give the finished text to you to do what you like with it or you can tell us to put it up for free on our website so that other adventurers can explore your twisted imagination.

If you want to add any of these books on to your pledge, just make sure to increase your pledge by the appropriate amount.

All prices include domestic shipping within the United States. International backers should add $3 per book for shipping. International retailers should message us for shipping rates.

Shipping for Bundles

We’ll be releasing The Last Days of Anglekite early in 2015 in a 6''x9'' format, featuring a color cover and a black and white interior. The softcover versions of The Cold Ruins of Lastlife and The Green Law of Varkith will follow within the same year. That makes shipping a bit difficult for these bundles, so we’ve decided to implement a three-tier shipping fee:

Regular Shipping: Domestic shipping is included, but international shipping is a bit extra: $7 to Canada and $12 anywhere else, just like the other reward levels. At this shipping tier, we’ll ship you all three books at once when we have them ready (Summer 2015).

Early Shipping: If you want us to ship Anglekite to you ASAP and then ship Lastlife and Varkith together in a few months, you’ll need to chip in a bit more for shipping: $5 for domestic shipping, $14 for Canada, and $24 for anywhere else in the world.

Instant Shipping: If you want each of your books shipped to you as soon as it’s ready, then you’ll need to chip in a bit more: $10 for domestic shipping, $20 for Canada, and $35 for anywhere else in the world.

Confused? Drop us a note and we’ll help you get it sorted out. We’ll also be using Backerkit after the Kickstarter closes, so you’ll have plenty of time to update your order or correct any mistakes!

Risks and challenges

The Last Days of Anglekite is Magpie Games' fourth roleplaying game Kickstarter, following the success of The Play's The Thing in 2011, Our Last Best Hope in 2012, and Urban Shadows in 2014. In addition to those projects, we've also had a hand in Wicked Fate, Wield, Play Dirty 2, Pleasant Dreams, World of Dew, and many more. We've been around the block a few times on Kickstarter!

To that end, we know that the #1 problem most Kickstarters experience is delays. We've worked hard for more than 18 months on ensuring that Last Days of Anglekite is ready for print, and we expect any Chaos Worlds we fund to move quickly through our process. We know that all estimated delivery times are estimated, but we've got a history of getting things out to people as soon as we can and in great condition.

In order to help us continue to deliver on our projects, we've brought Brendan Conway on to write and develop for us in 2015. Brendan is a great addition to the Magpie Games team, and this project is the first of many books that we're putting him front and center on this next year. Thanks for your support!
