About this project
Final Stretch Goal: $20,000
UPDATE (3/16) Thank you all so much for your support as we flew right past our $10,000 stretch goal and happily added a new bonus reward for all backers! The reception we've had on Kickstarter has been incredible, so we wanted to offer another bonus reward if we hit our final stretch goal of $20,000. Help us get there and we'll add an extra-long 60" option in addition to our standard 57" length tie.
We also would like to announce three new rewards packages and photos of the birch collar stays that arrived yesterday!
$70 Now and Later Package
$85 Three Ties Later
$200 The Wedding Package
Introducing Knotty Tie Co. laser-cut birch collar stays, etched with the word "backer" and the Knotty Tie Co. logo! One set included for every backer!.
Thanks you for all of your support so far!
As it stands now, the necktie lacks meaning in every way. It is mass-manufactured in distant places, with questionable ethics, and most importantly, impersonal designs. It's time to save the necktie.
Welcome to our project, where technology and fashion meet to create a truly revolutionary necktie. The best part is, we start with a blank canvas, and you are the artist!
Our goal is to make it possible for neckties to be designed and customized by you, then handcrafted by us. Once our project is complete, users will have the option to select from three widths, hundreds of design patterns, and endless colors. The custom design is printed in an eco-friendly digital printing process on 100% organic fabric and is then crafted by hand in Denver, CO.
We need backing to help complete programming, which will create the first fully customizable tie shop online. Here’s how we are designing it to work:
Step 1: Choose Width
Size matters. When clothes fit, they look and feel great. Neckties are no different. The width of a tie says a lot about a person, and It seems everyone has a preferred width that makes them happy, That’s why we’ve made sizes available for any tie-lover (and former haters):
- The Skinny, 2" - Modern and slim.
- The Knotty, 2.75" - Our favorite width. Not too wide, not too narrow.
- The Classic, 3.5" - Our widest option.
Step 2: Design or Choose Pattern
Dream big. The way we see it, other tie companies create designs they think you would like, and often miss the mark. We take a different approach altogether, because nobody knows what you like better than you. Why not leave the design decisions to you so that you can create the tie you have only dreamed of. And don’t worry, if you need help, our designers along with local artists have created hundreds of traditional and outlandish designs, from dots to dinosaurs, that may already make your dreams come true.
Step 3: Choose Color
Color outside the lines, color inside them, color anywhere you want for that matter. It is as simple as that, just add color. However, there is one word of caution. Because we use digital printing technology to transfer your design to fabric, colors may alter slightly, especially solid dark backgrounds with similar color foregrounds. For the best quality outcome, it is recommended to choose colors that contrast well, or use lighter color backgrounds with darker accents.
After Your Tie is Designed
Once you've completed your design, it is sent to our fabric printer in Durham, NC where it is printed onto 100% organic cotton sateen in an eco-friendly process. The nature of digital textile printing means that there is no excess dye to dispose of or be dumped into the waterways. We weighed many options for printing, and found that the printing process that our supplier uses is the best option in terms of color reproduction, finished fabric feel, and ethical concerns. As an added bonus, printing on-demand in this way allows us to keep our costs low because we don't have to carry inventory.
The fabric is then shipped to our HQ in Denver fresh off the printer. As soon as it is in our hands, we can get to work on crafting your perfect tie. Through plenty of trial and error, we've found the best way to assemble a tie (there are more ways than you would expect) with crisp, clean edges, straight seems, and just the right dimensions. It's a more complicated process than we ever imagined when we got this crazy idea, but we've got it down.
We are truly humbled by the support that we have received so far. If we've inspired you to stand behind us in this project, please check out our rewards for backing the project. We'd love to connect with you on twitter or facebook and hear your thoughts about how you would make the project better, your dream tie, or the meaning of life. Say hello and spread the word!
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!

Risks and challenges
The successful completion of our project requires that we create the platform we are promising, for which we lack the programming knowledge. To do so, we have found a top-notch developer with years of experience creating customizable product websites. We are building code from scratch which will make the experience totally unique, but will also require more time. We believe we can finish in two months, but If the website is behind schedule, we will offer individual design consultations for the remaining backers to get their rewards on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
This functionality won't likely be built into the website when we launch, but it is most definitely on our radar. However, we can definitely make an extra long tie for you. This will require a bit more work on our end, as well as a design consultation, but we are more than happy to tackle it for you at the $40 reward level.
We likely won't have this functionality built into the website when we launch, however we are more than happy to work with you on creating a tie based on your own designs. Backers at the $40 level will receive a one-on-one design consultation to work out all of the details.
Absolutely, at no additional charge!
Not quite yet. We're launching with standard neckties to master the logistics of the process, but rest assured that we do plan on adding bow ties at some point in the future.
Don't shoot a video on a rooftop at night in the dead of winter in Denver. Enough said.
