…and we’re back. The popular Old School Tactical series returns for its second iteration with Old School Tactical Volume II: West Front 1944-45. This edition of the quick to learn, challenging to master, tactical game introduces the Americans to the series. Fight across the European countryside with M-10 tank destroyers and Sherman Easy Eight Tiger tank destroyers. Pile your powerful rifle squads into venerable M5 halftracks or nail an onrushing armored car with a bazooka. Find your enemy, fix them, flank them, and finish them. If it works on the battlefield it works in Old School Tactical, and it works with minimal fuss and muss.
New units in Old School Tactical Volume II: West Front 1944-45 include (but sure as heck aren't limited to):
- SdKfz 251/22
- PzKpfw IV H
- PaK 40 75mm ATG
- German 2nd Line Infantry
- M5A1 halftrack
- M16 halftrack (4x.50cal)
- M8 Greyhound
- M5 Stuart
- M4A1 Sherman
- M4A3e8 (Easy Eight)
- M4A3 Sherman (105)
- M10 Wolverine
- HMG,MMG,BAR Bazooka Rifle and Engineer units
- Leaders and Snipers
About Old School Tactical
Two players contest each scenario using counters representing the soldiers, guns, and vehicles that fought these desperate battles. On each turn, play goes back and forth between the sides as Impulse Points are spent to enable a player's forces to act. When the battle is over, casualty and victory points are tallied and a victor is declared. Infantry target other soft units and attack using their Firepower value against the target’s Defense value. The attack can be modified by Leadership, support weapons and terrain effects. When things get intense, Assault moves into enemy hexes result in deadly Close Combat. Dice rolls are made using the Infantry Combat Table, and results are implemented.
Attacking armored vehicles requires a roll to hit the vehicle. If a hit is scored, the Firepower value of the attacker’s gun is used against the target’s front or flank defense value. Dice rolls are made using the Vehicle Combat Table and results are enforced. Vehicles may also use their HE Firepower value and secondary armaments directly against soft targets using the Infantry Combat Table.
Tired of reading? Let's watch famed reviewer Marco Arnaudo's review of the first game. Grab your popcorn.
Old School Tactical Volume II Includes:
- 3 sheets of unit, weapon, vehicle, and condition counters.
- a large (We are talking HUGE!) 30" x 41" MOUNTED game map, hexes are 1".
- 18 luck cards, such as Trigger Happy, Unexpected Obstacle, and Surprise Attack.
- 36 unit data cards.
- player aid cards.
- color rule book.
- color scenario book with 16 scenarios.
- massive box
Yeah, we have 'em, but I think that we have all seen that it's best if we introduce them as the campaign grows. We intend to add a map, extra data and Luck cards, solitaire scenarios, a game mat (yes, that's spelled correctly, "mat" not "map") that enhances solitaire play, enlarged data cards (for the weak-eyed among us) and more, but we want your input. Some of the best ideas we've had for stretch goals are not our ideas at all, but rather your ideas. So let's hear them, and while you are thinking, typing, or whatever, start your imagination with this one...
Stretch Goal #7: Pocket Battle #2. 53K!
Yet another map, actually two maps (summer and winter) and the scenarios to play on it. This map features a European village. With this map, you can refight the battles at Foy or any other small town in France or Germany.
Stretch Goal #6: Pocket Battles 48K! UNLOCKED!
Since the game's inception, players have asked Shayne and I for geomorphic game maps. Now they are here. Well, at least they are here when we reach $48,000. When we knock down this stretch goal we will offer the first Pocket Battle, an 11" x 17" two-sided geomorphic map, printed on 80lb paper (the high-quality stuff you get in games like Combat Commander by GMT) and a pair of scenarios to go with it. One side of the game map will depict summer terrain in the European countryside, the flip side will depict the same area in the winter. And when we reach $53,000 we will add a second Pocket Battle, the maps will link and the second set of scenarios will include two battles that use both maps. Shayne has a preview coming soon, so spread the word. Let's knock these out.
Stretch Goal #5: Neoprene Play Mat for the Germantically (sic) Inclined 45K! UNLOCKED!
Okay, people. You asked for it, and trust me, a LOT of you asked for it. Here it is; yet another neoprene play mat. Very similar to our $40K stretch goal, but this mat is German themed. Perfect for solitaire play or to ensure that each of you has a mat for those two-player games. Bask in its neoprenic Germanity. (btw, we're not sure how many of these collection of letters are actually words)
Stretch Goal #4: Neoprene Play Mat 40K! UNLOCKED!
And now for something completely different. Our next stretch goal doesn’t give you tanks, paratroopers, new map boards or even a set of Luck Cards. Our next stretch goal gives you time! For this stretch goal we are giving you a large (approximately 12” x 17”) neoprene playing mat. Using it will certainly save gamers hours (okay, maybe just minutes) when setting up and playing, and it's perfect for the solo gamer. You can use it to track Impulse Points, the Turn, Casualty Points, Victory Points, and Impulse Point modifiers, all on an attractive neoprene mat that rolls out easily and lays flat.
Stretch Goal #3: Tanks for the Memories! 35K! UNLOCKED!
When we get to $35,000 we will unlock yet another stretch goal. Six additional tanks, two each of the M-18 Hellcat, the M-36 Jackson, and the German Jagpanther. Jagpanther I SAY! (although it still isn't as cool as an Easy Eight)
Stretch Goal #2: Nine Additional Luck Cards! 30K! UNLOCKED!
Face it, wargames aren't all about training, maneuver, calibers, and armor thickness. War is chaos, and chaos is luck, and adding that pinch of luck, through the use of Luck cards, is one of the most fun design elements of Old School Tactical. This stretch goal broadens your luck horizon, adding cards such as Experimental Ammunition, Electrical Storm, Sudden Downpour, and Misguided. You'll get nine additional Luck cards when (not if!) we reach this stretch goal.
Stretch Goal #1: Paratroopers! 26K! UNLOCKED!
We all love 'em, a lot of film footage has been spent on them, they are the paratroopers of the 101st and 82 Airborne Divisions. If we reach $26,000 you'll get a complete sheet of Airborne counters, rules for using them (paradrops, etc), six scenarios, and a HUGE 30" X 41" historical map. What location for the historical map? We have some ideas, but what are yours? Carentan? Foy, Noville? Let us know and we might just decide to use your suggestion.
About Flying Pig Games
In November of 2014 I founded Flying Pig Games, a game company dedicated to fun. A game company about the games that I like to play, and hope you do too. Tactical war games are one of my passions. So, when Shayne Logan contacted me about Old School Tactical (OST), I was pretty, dang jazzed. Here was a tactical game that had the beautiful art needed to immerse you in the battle, the simple, yet unique, rules to make it accessible, and the scale that I loved. I couldn't sign him up quickly enough.
It took a awhile to put Old School Tactical Volume I together, but the response has been fantastic. You all seem to love it as much as we do. While we have been busy at Flying Pig shipping and marketing, Shayne has been making making Volume II, we hope you are as excited about it as we are. I hope it is a game you choose to back.
Risks and challenges
This is my fifth Kickstarter campaign. I'm lucky in that all have succeeded All have been delivered or are in production ('65). It's not easy, but if you pledge for my campaigns, you will get a high-quality product. Sure, there are obstacles, but my company always overcomes them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
