About this project
In the spirit of The Alchemist and the story of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Pillows For Your Prison Cell is a timeless parable in novella form.
Inside Front Jacket Copy to Describe the Book:
Long ago in a distant land, a king built a windowless prison, with walls that reached to the sky. He called it The Mill. A sentence to The Mill was effectively a death sentence because, not only had no one ever escaped, no one had ever been released! The length of one’s sentence mattered not. None who entered ever departed.
In that land there was a boy named Amir. And, on his father's birthday, in an act of desperation, he made a series of poor choices that lead him to a sentence at the infamous Mill.
It was nothing like he expected. It was worse.
Once inside, he discovered the truth about why no one ever got out. But knowing the truth is only half the battle. Can Amir escape the grip of the prison and find a path to freedom?

Why a physical printing?
In this era of e-books and on-demand publishing, I still want to create a high-quality, old-school physical book. First of all, electronic books are like electronic photographs: harder to share and easier to lose. I put e-books on my Kindle and forget that I have them, but I never forget the copy of The Animal Family that is sitting on my desk waiting for me to read the next chapter.
Second, a story is more than just words, and a physical book allows me to convey the fullness of the story. I’ve been tremendously fortunate to work with a talented illustrator who has extensive experience and stacks of published books under his belt. James Bernardin has illustrated many books and created countless covers over his 20-year career, and he’s an accomplished plen aire and portrait artist as well. With an artist like James on the project, it would be a shame to limit the story to digital media.
Third, I want to give people the opportunity to discover Pillows For Your Prison Cell at their local book store. As much as online book sellers have improved the e-book browsing experience, there’s nothing like walking down the aisle at your favorite book store wondering what treasures await.
How will the money be spent?
My goal is to raise $6,500 in order to print 500 copies of Pillows For Your Prison Cell. That breaks down approximately as follows. A little more than half goes to the printing costs. The next largest chunk goes to the artist for the interior art work. (I've already paid for the cover.) Then typesetting, the final editing, and ISBN fees. (I've already paid for earlier editing.) Lastly, there are fees for the Kickstarter service and Amazon Payments:
If I'm able to reach and surpass the goal above, my stretch goal would be to double it. First of all, this would allow me to increase the printing six-fold to a total of 3,000 copies!! The cost per copy goes down significantly after the first 500. I would also be able to recoup the costs I've already spent on the cover art. Lastly, it would allow me to print an extra set of special leather editions to use for marketing and promotional purposes. The stretch goal would break down approximately as follows:
How does a Kickstarter project work?
Kickstarter is an awesome program that allows creative producers and artists to raise funds for a specific project from people who want to support the work.Essentially, I lay out my plan to print the book and you say, “that looks awesome, count me in”.You make a donation using the buttons on the right side of the screen, and you receive a reward for the donation. There are different rewards for different donation levels which are outlined in more detail below.
VERY IMPORTANT: If I don’t raise 100% of the money necessary to complete the project, I will not receive any of it!!!So, please consider making a donation in any amount today. While you are here on Kickstarter, check out other projects that are in your area or top picks by Kickstarter staff.

Risks and challenges
Here's the good news. I'm not doing this alone. I am working with a very good friend who is an experienced professional illustrator. I am also working with another friend who has 30 years of experience in publishing and printing, and now runs a publishing company. Together they are helping me iron out all the details.
Writing and Editing
Artist secured for Cover Art and Interior Art
Cover art is complete
Printing Consultant has already given me quotes for printing costs
Printing Details Selected (Cloth, End Papers, Paper, Font, Margins)
To Be Completed DURING the Funding Period:
(I will be sharing updates on the status of each of these during the funding period.)
Complete Chapter Interior Art
Complete the Jacket Design. (already underway)
To Be Completed AFTER the Project is Funded:
Once I receive the funding from Kickstarter (2 weeks after the funding period ends), I will order the printing. It will already be set up with the printer.
Printing is expected to take 2 weeks to print and 1 week to ship to me.
The special edition leather-bound copies of Pillows are expected to take an extra 3 weeks for production and delivery.
Any of these risks could cause a delay, but I don't believe any one or even all of them combined would cause a failure.
Risk: Artist fails to deliver the interior art or is delayed.
Mitigation: I know two other artists well whose work I really love. Either of them may be able and available to provide art.
R: Printer failure or delay.
M: Fortunately, my printing partner has 30 years of experience and many printing partners for us to work with. If one will not be able to print in a timely manner, we can go to another printer.
R: Editor is not available for final edit.
M: The printing partner and other published friends of mine all have editors that they've recommended. I could turn to one of them.
R: Something happens to me!
M: Amazingly, I have two interns helping me this summer to manage all of the little details in getting this project done. They are amazing and well on their way to making this happen no matter what!
