My kids love listening to Michael Jackson's music, so we listen in the car a lot. And a few months ago "Billie Jean" came on and a question popped into my head: "What would that keyboard riff sound like in three?"
That question eventually led me to this project. This will be my second recording project with Kickstarter—my first was a solo piano album that funded in 2013 and was released in 2014. This will be a little bit different because these are jazz arrangements and I have some great musicians playing with me. On sax is Tim Gordon who has played with The Temptations, Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, and tons more. Ron Brendle has played bass for Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, and tons more. On drums, Adam Snow has played with Cyrus Chestnut, Russell Malone, George Porter, Jr., etc., etc. These guys are seriously good, and I'm proud to have them play with me on this recording.
We've already recorded three tracks for this EP—"The Way You Make Me Feel," "Stranger in Moscow," and "Billie Jean." Next up, I want to head back to the studio to record a solo piano version of "Thriller," mix what we've already recorded, and make any edits needed. Then comes mastering, CD duplication, licensing, and plenty of other miscellaneous costs. That's where you can help this project become a reality.
I've tried to come up with some cool rewards. You can pre-order any single track or the entire EP (including a special bonus track). One level even comes with a custom ringtone! I hope you'll check out all the rewards available.
Here's a preview of the three tracks we've recorded so far:
Here's a demo recording of my version of "Thriller" that I'd like to close out the EP with:
Thank you so much for your consideration!
Risks and challenges
The bulk of the hard work is done, and most of what's left is to bring in other professionals to do their part to complete the project. I've also set fulfillment of rewards to August which should give plenty of buffer for any delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
