Stretch Goal: If we achieve $50,000 in funding, we will offer a free upgrade to all watch backers of a genuine alligator strap. These normally retail for $150 and are available in a variety of colors (black, cognac, tan, blue). We just need a few more backers in this last week and we will be able to reward our supporters with these luxury straps. Hand-made in Italy from premium belly cut American alligator hides. There are no finer straps than these!

After collaborating on the design of the "Duo-Face" watch from the Rpaige Watch Co., Richard Paige challenged Duo-Face case designer Mark Carson to come up with an unexpected watch design. The result is the art deco "Crash of '29" watch featuring a restored vintage American pocket watch movement along with newly designed and produced case, dial and hands.

Using a "12 Size" vintage American pocket watch movement makes for an impressively sized art deco masterpiece watch. The case is approximately 49.7 mm wide by 57.5 mm tall and 12.7 mm thick. Even at this size, the angled lugs and flat bottom make the watch sit snugly on even average to smaller wrists.

The strap is 22 mm wide at the lugs and tapers to 20 mm at the buckle. The case is 316L Surgical Grade Stainless Steel. The watch features a sapphire crystal and an exhibition back which shows off the movement's decoration and 2.5 Hz operation.

Water resistance will be rated at 50 meters (165 feet), so while this is not a dive watch, the occasional splash of water won't do the watch any harm. The watch will be paired with a leather strap and each watch will be sent in a zippered travel case. The warranty is 12 months and covers the watch case, crown, dial, hands and movement.

This is your chance to wear a true piece of American watch heritage as a modern wristwatch from established watch makers. Series strictly limited to 49 pieces. Supporting this project will help make these watches a reality. The earlier you support this project, the more you will save off the retail price of $3,500. Without your support, we won't be able to produce this watch.

Risks and challenges

Rpaige and Mark Carson each are established watch micro-brands that have been designing and producing mechanical movement watches for a number of years.

With any new watch design, the primary challenges are technical. Making sure the dial and hands fit the case and the movement, etc. Having done this before, Mark and Richard know the pitfalls and how to work engineering issues with suppliers while keeping on schedule. The design work is already done and we have a working prototype watch.

This pre-production watch uses a case made by a production partner, so the case manufacturing and finishing issues are already solved. The dial in the prototype watch is just a laser engraved prototype, however our existing dial makers can easily produce our dial design. The hands shown in many of the images were "photoshopped" to reflect the actual design. However we have used "cathedral hands" from another watch design on the running prototype. Our hands maker is also our dial maker, so production of hands poses no concerns.

The only real unknown is time. Normally dials and hands take 90 days to produce. But we are allowing a full 4 months for production in case any design or production delays crop up. Case manufacturing is also scheduled to take 3 months (concurrent with dial and hands production). Restoration of the vintage American pocket watch movements is an ongoing activity for Richard and his watchmakers at Rpaige. 20 fully restored movements per month is well within our capability.
