About this project
Thanks to all who participated in this project. I had fun, I got a couple new songs mixed, I made some funny videos. I learned more about editing videos. I found a great way to make inexpensive music videos. But it looks like plan B to complete this project. Stay tuned. Plan B is gonna be great.
I am getting quite a few looks from people I don't actually know, so I thought I'd take this time to share my story:
In 2007, I went to bed a man in my prime, and woke up with a foot in the grave. I was diagnosed with Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma... Cancer. I decided at that moment that I was going to dare to dream.
I had played in bands through my life, but never my own music....Until Now.
I am a private music teacher and musician making his way in the cold world of the 21st century.
Yes, I still have cancer, but it hasn't beaten me yet.
Today my dream is making an album, one you'd want to leave on the turntable and listen over and over. The costs of living with cancer are overwhelming, not to mention making an album.
That's why I’ve turned to Kickstarter for help in raising those funds. Now you can help. Every pledge comes with a cool prize: these cool rewards available and all are from the heart: T-shirts, CDs, and the super-special Limited Edition Vinyl EP entitled Galactic Paladin. You can also get music lessons from me personally or bring the whole band into your backyard for a barbeque! I hope you’ll check that out. In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if you'd share this project with your friends so I’ve set up a shortcut to take you directly to my project page www.grooveduke.net That’s dot NET. That will always be the shortcut to my latest project.
Time is running out on Kickstarter, help spread the word.
This Funding drive end on May 20. “I have plenty of love in my heart for anyone who helps out with this project.“
My 3rd Project!
I'm Groove Duke, back for my 3rd Kickstarter project. You have been so great in your support of me and my art that words just can't fully express my gratitude. Two tracks off the album that you funded put Groove Duke on the Grammy ballot and although we didn't make it to the final five nominees in our category, it was very cool to get some peer recognition for our efforts. It says we do good work! So with that assurance, I am pressing on to my next project. And I think this one will be even better than the last two!
I Remember Rock N Roll Radio...
Are you old enough to remember when AM radio was THE place to listen to catchy little pop tunes? Well, if my last album was my love letter to Rhythm and Blues, this EP is my love letter to AM Radio. Specifically, this album is about making those classic 3 1/2 minute hook filled gems that were the staple of AM radio for decades. The title "Galactic Paladin" is an acknowledgement of my love for the old Pulp magazine stories. In a way the sci-fi pulps were to fiction what AM radio was to music: short and to the point, with a strong hook.
Steam Punk Design
The Design of the EP will be spearheaded by Thomas Young and will evoke pulp science fiction and Steam Punk. No, Groove Duke and the Band won't be dressed Steam Punk fashion ---yet. But you'll see plenty of goggles and airships in the album art. Here are some early sketches just to give you an idea. Our hero, Galactic Paladin, will be equally at home in 1890s Paris or traveling the galaxy like John Carter. Our Heroine will be sweet, but sexy and probably wearing a corset, (ooh la la!) while our villain probably won't even be human!
6 Song EP On Vinyl!
And to top it all off I am releasing this project on Vinyl first. That's right, this will be an EP featuring 6 songs on a 12 inch shiny black vinyl disc! The Back will be etched with an exciting Steam Punk scene. You may even want to buy two so you can frame one and play the other! (See the $100 level for the best value on this project!)
Don't have a turntable anymore? (What?!!! how could you let it go?) Don't worry. Every EP comes with a download card or sticker, so you can download the entire EP to your smart phone or MP3 player! (HINT: If you play Groove Duke through your phone's external speaker, it sounds just like an old AM transistor radio.)
In fact, it seems to me that the MP3 has brought back a certain pop sensibility to today's music. But this project will be available as an actual disc with actual liner notes. It's about doing something special. It's about making music I like for people I like.
So, for my rewards I'll be offering opportunities to spend time with people I like: including a trumpet lesson or make up your own excuse to spend some time with me in the "make up your own reward." While those are the special rewards, don't worry, I have plenty of love in my heart for anyone who helps out with this project. So there are plenty of CDs and Tshirts. Please note that the cover image is not the official Cover and is NOT the limited edition Thomas Young print.
What will I use the bread for?
$600 Graphic design
$300 5% Kickstarter fee
$300 5% credit card processing fee
$3600 6 songs - $600/song
$1200 packaging & postage
Folks, I am a private music teacher and musician making my way in the cold world of the 21st century. I still have cancer, but it hasn't beaten me yet.
I am still making music I like for people I like. Kickstarter is the way I am funding it. When I reach my goal, we'll have a big party and you will get some uber-cool rewards. If I fail to reach my goal, then I'll hang my head in shame and slink back into the primordial ooze from whence I came. Please don't let me slink back to the ooze! Pledge now and tell your friends.
Summary: Hook Driven. Horn Driven. Radio friendly.
I want to make an album that you just leave on your turn table (and eventually your CD player) for days or weeks at a time. I think the best way to do that is with this love letter to AM radio! Galactic Paladin by Groove Duke.
Live Funky. Love Strong.
