THE PROJECT

Remembering Rhinos will be a beautiful coffee table book, created with the aim of raising funds to fight rhino poaching and protect this endangered species. All images will be generously donated by some of the world's top wildlife photographers, ensuring it will be a stunning and collectable tribute. It is the follow up to Remembering Elephants and a must-buy for anyone who bought that book.

When we launched the Remembering Elephants book last year (which we funded here on Kickstarter), I called it a 'Live Aid' moment for wildlife photographers. Little did I realise its potential to become an annual event. The success we had with that book was overwhelming and surpassed our wildest ambitions.

Remembering Elephants book launch at the RGS
Remembering Elephants book launch at the RGS

In the end, we included images by 65 photographers, sold out of 2500 copies in two months from launch and so far, have raised over £135,000 to fight poaching. The fact that this money is being spent on the ground right now in Africa is one of our proudest achievements. Currently we are supporting projects in Kenya, Ethiopia, Mali, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

Given that success, our thoughts turned of course to a sequel. Never one to be unambitious, I decided that we should bring it out in time for Christmas 2017 with the hope that people who bought or gifted the first book would want the follow up to join the set. But all of this of course depends upon us being able to successfully fund it on Kickstarter.

Once again we have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support given to us by the wildlife photographic community. Many of the photographers from last time have already signed up and we're also including images by a good number of new photographers too, including Steve Winter, below.

The book will be the same size and format as last time, 144 pages on beautiful paper and the images we've already started selecting are stunning. With the same editor, producer and production team in place, we are very confident in creating an equally beautiful book and a worthy successor to the last.

Photographers confirmed as contributing to this book so far, once again under the banner of 'Wildlife Photographers United' are:

Andrew Aveley, Angie Scott, Anja Denker, Art Wolfe, Brendon Jennings, Britta Jaschinski, Daryl Balfour, David Cayless, David Lloyd, Denise Eriksson, Elliot Neep, Federico Veronesi, Frans Lanting, George Logan, Greg du Toit, Heinrich Neumeyer, Hendri Venter, Hilary Hann, Hilary O'Leary, Isak Pretorius, James Suter, James Warwick, Jan van der Greef, Johan Marais, Keith Connelly, Margot Raggett, Marina Cano, Marius Coetzee, Mark Carwardine, Mark Dumbleton, Marlon du Toit, Marsel van Oosten, Michael Poliza, Michel Denis-Huot, Morkel Erasmus, Neil Aldridge, Paul Goldstein, Peter Chadwick, Peter Delaney, Piper Mackay, Richard Peters, Roger Hooper, Ross Couper, Shannon Wild, Shem Compion, Stephen Belcher, Steve & Ann Toon, Steve Winter, Theo Allofs, Thomas Mangelsen, Todd Gustafson, Will Burrard-Lucas, William Steel

The funds raised here on Kickstarter will be used to pay for an initial print run and the quantity we print will depend upon demand here. If we exceed our target, funds raised will then also enable us to put on a London exhibition again, which last time proved a key sales opportunity for the books.

Books will then go on sale at that exhibition, launch date 30th October 2017, ready for Christmas.

Once again 100% of profits from the project will be administered by our partner, The Born Free Foundation and together with them, we are committed to ensuring money goes towards projects protecting all five species of rhino.

THE PROBLEM

White rhino, image donated by Federico Veronesi
White rhino, image donated by Federico Veronesi

Rhino horn is worth more than its weight in gold thanks to a misguided belief in its 'magical' medicinal properties. Made from keratin, the same stuff as our hair and fingernails, the horn is ground up and sold as a cure for everything from impotence to cancer. And as a result, daily, rhinos are being slaughtered to meet this demand by poachers who don't seem to care at all for the horrific consequences.

As I have grown to understand recently, many people simply don't realise the horror of what happens to rhinos when poachers take their horns. Far from just 'cutting off' the horn neatly, often, while the rhino is still alive and conscious, they 'dig out' as far as they can, causing great injury, pain and often death for the rhino. It is inhumane and it must be stopped.

A 'survivor' - image donated by Johan Marais

A war is bring waged against these poachers and our funds will be used to help fight that battle and protect the survivors, many photos of which are too graphic for us to share here. But believe us, if we shared you would be horrified.

The photographers who have signed up for this book, along with many thousands of others, are sick of hearing about (and often witnessing) the issue and not being able to take action. This book will be an outlet for them to unite in their condemnation of poaching and the purchase of rhino horn in any form. It is also hoped that PR around the book will continue to educate global purchasers of rhino horn on the reasons to stop.

THE BOOK

"This is a unique chance to acquire a photographic collection of work by some of the world’s leading wildlife photographers, all of whom have donated their images in support of rhino conservation. It’s the next big book in the series, so if you’ve bought Remembering Elephants, you’ll know the quality of Remembering Rhinos." Rosamund Kidman Cox, Editor, Wildlife Photographer of the Year Portfolio books.

Once again our title plays on two levels. We need to remember rhinos and the plight they are facing right now. But our intention is also to document this beautiful animal for the world and future generations to see and appreciate, through images by the best photographers in the world.

Black rhino, image donated by Art Wolfe
Black rhino, image donated by Art Wolfe

Last time we told the story of an African elephant's life, from birth through to old age but the narrative for rhinos is going to be different. Our intention is to include every species of rhino left on the planet, from the remaining three Northern White rhinos in the world through to the most prolific but also probably the most persecuted, the Southern Whites. If we can secure the right images, then Black, Greater One-Horned (Indian), Javan and Sumatran rhinos will also be included. Our intention is to donate to projects which protect each and every one of these species.

Many of our photographers have already sent us a choice of images for us to use, a few of which are shown here and in the video and the standard is dazzling. We are committed to ensuring that the eventual selection all lives up to this standard - once again, this will not be a book that allows any fillers.

THE FOREWORD

Mark Carwardine has very kindly agreed to write our foreword for us this time. Mark is a zoologist, an active and outspoken conservationist, an award-winning writer, a TV and radio presenter, a widely published wildlife photographer, a magazine columnist and conservation consultant.

He co-presented the six-part BBC2 television series Last Chance to See, with Stephen Fry, in which the unlikely duo travelled the world in search of endangered species and then also Last Chance to See: Return of the Rhino (BBC2, October 2010), again with Stephen Fry. In this programme they accompanied the three Northern White rhinos currently under protection in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy from the Czech zoo where they were held in captivity.

Mark presented, too, the weekly half-hour radio programme Nature, on BBC Radio 4, for many years.

He has written more than 50 books and hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles, and wrote a provocative monthly column in BBC Wildlife magazine since January 2004.

Mark was Chairman of the Judging Panel of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition, jointly owned by BBC Wildlife magazine and the Natural History Museum, for seven years.

WHY KICKSTARTER?

Kickstarter worked so well for us last time! It allowed us to raise enough to print a superb high quality book which then sold for 100% of its cover price to the cause.

Last time people found the fact that every penny of the book they were buying was going straight to fighting poaching incredibly compelling and we think that goes a long way to explain our success.

Once the funds are confirmed design will start straight away, with a provisional printing date already booked for early July. Books will be dispatched to Kickstarter purchasers in late October, ahead of the planned exhibition opening.

WHY SUPPORT US?

Quite simply, we can't do this without you. The wildlife photographic community is once again ready to step up and do its bit for conservation and the collaboration for a second time of so many of the biggest names in that world is a huge testament to what was achieved last time. Please help us make this follow up a reality because we are taking nothing for granted.

BORN FREE FOUNDATION

We have chosen to partner once again with Born Free Foundation after a hugely successful partnership last time around. They are an international wildlife charity committed to taking action worldwide to save lives, stop suffering and protect species in the wild. With support right from the top in the form of the charity's president Will Travers OBE and their co-founder Virginia McKenna OBE, we know that their team will once again be a huge support in making the project a success. One of the most appealing aspects of working with Born Free is that their size means we are important to them and that we are able to discuss personally exactly where our funds will be deployed.

THE TEAM

Keith Wilson (Editor)

Originally hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Keith moved to London in 1983 and has since become one of the country’s most respected journalists, authors and artistic directors. He is a passionate traveller and a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, which has led him in turn to work with many legendary adventurers, such as Sir Chris Bonington, Doug Scott, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Martin Hartley and Sir Wally Herbert.

Keith is the founder of Black + White Photography and Outdoor Photography magazines and was the youngest ever editor of the UK’s Amateur Photographer. In 2013 he launched Wild Planet Photo Magazine, the world’s first monthly online photo magazine devoted entirely to wildlife.

Eddie Ephraums (Technical Director)

Photographer, publisher, mentor, or as one contemporary describes him, something of a renaissance man. Over the years Eddie has worked with many well-known photographers, such as Joe Cornish and Charlie Waite, helping them to develop their ideas and refine their vision.

Eddie started his photographic career as a specialist b&w printer before working solely on his own projects. He has regularly lectured and given workshops at various colleges and professional institutions including the Royal Photographic Society in Bath. He has written extensively for British magazines on creative b&w work, toning techniques, archival processing and platinum printing.

Margot Raggett (Producer)

Former PR director turned wildlife photographer, Margot is the brains and drive behind Remembering Elephants and now this project. Once again she has decided to use all her business and organisational skills combined with her contacts in the wildlife world to try and pull off this ambitious project.

BLACK RHINOCEROS by Gary Hodges

BLACK RHINOCEROS embellished print by Gary Hodges
BLACK RHINOCEROS embellished print by Gary Hodges

Gary Hodges is the UK's best selling pencil artist. He has published over 130 different limited edition prints... all but 12 editions have sold out. He's given us a specially embellished print of his 'Black Rhinoceros' drawing for our 'Remembering Rhinos' Kickstarter campaign. The 850 edition was published in 1996 and the prints sold out quickly. He used artistic license to create the huge horn, commonplace on rhinos roaming the African savannah in the past.

Gary has just spent 4 hours drawing over this particular print with thousands of additional pencil marks making it more dynamic, unique and highly collectable. The image below shows the embellished print... the first time Gary has embellished this particular print. so it is rather rare indeed.

He has created four other rhino drawings in the past that were made into limited edition prints. They are all included in his autobiography book 'Heart & Soul'... 5 copies also available here to pledge £70 or more on.

Risks and challenges

Once again we have the designer, editor and printing house in place, so the main obstacle we need to overcome is the funding. If we raise over £20,000 then production is guaranteed to go ahead. The main challenge then will be to gather in the chosen, promised, high res images from wildlife photographers scattered all over the world but we believe we have allowed sufficient time to do this, hence the long lead times for this book. We truly believe it will be worth waiting for once again.
