THE PROJECT

A 'live-aid' moment for wildlife photographers, this unprecedented book has gathered support from some of the best wildlife photographers in the field in order to raise money for anti-poaching initiatives.

The idea is a simple one. Raise money on Kickstarter to print the most beautiful book on elephants ever made. Ask the best wildlife photographers in the field to donate an image each and pledge that all profits from the eventual sale of those books will be used by Born Free Foundation to fight elephant poaching.

Photographers committed to the project under the guise of 'Wildlife Photographers United', include Art Wolfe, Frans Lanting, Michel Denis-Huot, Federico Veronesi, Greg du Toit, Will Burrard-Lucas, Peter Delaney, Paul Goldstein, Jonathan & Angela Scott, Billy Dodson, Morkel Erasmus, Shem Compion, Isak Pretorius, David Lloyd, Andy Rouse, Albie Ventner, Austin Thomas, Anja Denker, Sarah & Andy Skinner, Marius Coetzee, Ross Couper, Elliot Neep, Marsel Van Oosten, Richard Peters, Mark Dumbleton, Theo Allofs, Brendon Jennings, Keith Connolly, Todd Gustafson, Alwyn Coates, George Logan, Daryl Balfour, Martyn Colbeck, Johan Marais, Michael Vickers, Melissa Groo, Marina Cano, Victoria Stone & Mark Deeble, Ann & Steve Toon, Marlon du Toit, James Warwick, Jan van der Greef, Richard Packwood, Tom Mangelsen and Michael Poliza. There are further photographers to be announced soon as well.

The funds raised here on Kickstarter will be used to pay for an initial print run and if we exceed the target, a London exhibition to support the launch in September 2016. Books will then go on sale in Autumn 2016 to the public, ready for the peak Christmas sales period.

All funds raised after the sale of those books will be administered by Born Free Foundation in three areas:

- On-the-ground anti poaching initiatives

- Elephant action plans

- Educational outreach about the impact of poaching in countries where there is demand for ivory

THE PROBLEM

Image donated by Marius Coetzee
Image donated by Marius Coetzee

The shocking issues around elephant poaching for ivory are well known but by way of a brief summary:

- It is estimated that 90-100 per day are being killed for their ivory

- More than 117,000 have been killed since January 2012

- It is estimated that between just 434,000 and 684,000 African elephants now remain, although the real figure could be lower

- Money raised through illegal poaching is often used to fund terrorist organisations

- The elephant poaching epidemic for ivory across Africa has reached crisis levels - ivory markets need to disappear fast before elephants do

The photographers who have signed up for this book, along with many thousands of others, are sick of hearing about (and often witnessing) the issue and not being able to take action. This book will be an outlet for them to unite in their condemnation of poaching and the purchase of ivory in any form. It is also hoped that PR around the book will continue to educate global purchasers of ivory on the reasons to stop.

THE BOOK

"This book has the potential to become a collectors' item", Rosamund Kidman Cox, Editor, Wildlife Photographer of the Year Portfolio books.

The idea behind the book is to tell the story loosely of the life of an African elephant, from birth to old age, using images from the best in the field. We want to document what these beautiful animals are like in the wild...not least because, heaven forbid poaching isn't stopped, they might not still be around for our children and their children to see.

The title therefore plays on two levels. We need to remember elephants right now, which is why we are taking action. But if the worst came to pass, this would be a loving and stunning memorial for future generations of what these sentient, intelligent animals were like. We are determined, of course, to prevent this from happening....

Many of photographers have already sent us a choice of images for us to use, a few of which are shown here and in the video and the standard is dazzling. We are committed to ensuring that the eventual selection all lives up to this standard - this will not be a book that allows any fillers.

Very excitingly there is even an incredible sequence of a baby elephant being born, which we are holding back for now but that promises to be the most mesmerising start to the book.

The book will be 304mm x 280mm hardback portrait format using 170gsm paper.

THE TEAM

I have assembled the same team that produced David Lloyd's much acclaimed 'As Long As There Are Animals' last year, with the challenge to match the quality of materials and design of that beautiful book.

There will be a forward each by Virginia McKenna and Will Travers.

Virginia McKenna OBE

Virginia McKenna is a Founder Trustee of the Born Free Foundation, the animal welfare and conservation charity, whose President and co-founder is her eldest son, Will Travers OBE.

Virginia’s leading film roles include such classics as The Cruel Sea, A Town Like Alice for which she won a British Academy Award for Best Actress. She is however perhaps best remembered for her roles in Born Free, Ring of Bright Water and Carve Her Name With Pride.

She was awarded the OBE in 2004 for her contribution to the arts and animal welfare. In 2012 Virginia was presented with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science from Nottingham Trent University. In April she received the British Animal Honours Outstanding Contribution 2013, and in October a lifetime achievement award at the New York Wildlife Conservation Film Festival.

Will Travers OBE

Will Travers is an internationally renowned wildlife expert who has dedicated his life to wildlife issues, since he lived in Kenya while his parents, Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers, made the film Born Free (1966). In 1984, he co-founded the wildlife charitable organisation now known as The Born Free Foundation, which works to stop individual wild animal suffering and protect threatened species worldwide.

Will is President of Born Free USA, a national animal advocacy non-profit 501©(3) organization and is President of the Species Survival Network (SSN), an international coalition of more than 80 organizations committed to the promotion, enhancement and strict enforcement of CITES.

He has been involved in rescuing elephants, tigers and lions and is always willing to share his experience and knowledge to further Born Free’s vision for a more compassionate future.

Will was awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in June 2012 for Services to Conservation and Animal Welfare in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Keith Wilson (Editor)

Originally hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Keith moved to London in 1983 and has since become one of the country’s most respected journalists, authors and artistic directors. He is a passionate traveller and a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, which has led him in turn to work with many legendary adventurers, such as Sir Chris Bonington, Doug Scott, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Martin Hartley and Sir Wally Herbert.

Keith is the founder of Black + White Photography and Outdoor Photography magazines and was the youngest ever editor of the UK’s Amateur Photographer. In 2013 he launched Wild Planet Photo Magazine, the world’s first monthly online photo magazine devoted entirely to wildlife.

Eddie Ephraums (Technical Director)

Photographer, publisher, mentor, or as one contemporary describes him, something of a renaissance man. Over the years Eddie has worked with many well-known photographers, such as Joe Cornish and Charlie Waite, helping them to develop their ideas and refine their vision.

Eddie started his photographic career as a specialist b&w printer before working solely on his own projects. He has regularly lectured and given workshops at various colleges and professional institutions including the Royal Photographic Society in Bath. He has written extensively for British magazines on creative b&w work, toning techniques, archival processing and platinum printing.

Margot Raggett (Producer)

Former PR director turned wildlife photographer, Margot is the brains and drive behind this project. Having been moved by the plight of the elephants she so enjoys photographing, she has decided to use all her business and organisational skills combined with her contacts in the wildlife world to try and pull off this ambitious and unprecedented project. She is earning no money from the endeavour and is committed to seeing it through as part of her portfolio career over the next 12-18 months.

WHY KICKSTARTER?

The idea is simple. We need to raise sufficient money to print a superb high quality book in two editions - a regular and a limited run deluxe edition - that can go on to sell to raise money to fight poaching.

By using Kickstarter to effectively pre-sell a number of those books, we can print a much larger print run, leaving us paid-for books to eventually sell for the cause. We need to raise a minimum of £20,000 to make the idea a reality.

Once the funds are confirmed design of the book will commence and the printing house will be booked. Books will land in the UK in August 2016 and be dispatched in September 2016.

In the words of Margot: "I've worked tirelessly for the past six months contacting photographers all over the world, one by one, trying to persuade them to sign up for the project. Photographers of this calibre are contacted all the time to donate images and aren't able to say yes to everything, so to have persuaded so many to come together for one project is unprecedented."

BORN FREE FOUNDATION

We have chosen to work with Born Free Foundation on the eventual proceeds of this project, an international wildlife charity committed to taking action worldwide to save lives, stop suffering and protect species in the wild. The charity's president, Will Travers OBE has been a big supporter of and helpful advisor on the project's aims from the outset and the team has pledged as much resource as we need to make the project a reality.

Risks and challenges

We have the designer, editor and printing house in places, so the main obstacle we need to overcome is the funding. If we raise over £20,000 then production is guaranteed to go ahead. The main challenge then will be to gather in the chosen, promised, high res images from wildlife photographers scattered all over the world but we believe we have allowed sufficient time to do this, hence the long lead times for this book. It will be worth waiting for.
