Roller derby is pretty much the best sport ever, so I want to make a coloring book that celebrates the awesome women and girls who play.
This is a postcard coloring book with 20 original illustrations of some of the most awesome people in the sport of roller derby, including Freight Train, Suzy Hotrod, Demanda Riot, Roxy Dallas, Violet Knockout, and many many more. Each postcard in the book will be perforated so you can easily color it in, get your favorite skater to sign it, and send it home as a unique souvenir. The images are based on action shots and portraits taken by amazing derby photographers.
The book is 6.5 x 4.75 inches. The backs will have lines for addresses and spots for a stamp. The paper is 100# opaque cover stock so the postcards can be colored with colored pencils or markers.
Why make this book?
Roller derby is a space where women can be tough and strong, where they can fall down and learn how to get back up, both physically and metaphorically. It's a place where women can feel positive about their bodies for what those bodies are capable of doing, and not just what they look like. There's a strong DIY culture, since we've had to literally make up the rules and build the sport as we've gone.
Two years ago, I launched a Kickstarter project to fund a book, Derby Life: A Crash Course in the Incredible Sport of Roller Derby. Thanks to the support of the community, I got to spend a year finishing and publishing the book, and another year out in the world sharing it with people and hearing their feedback. The book is a #1 bestseller in its category on Amazon with a 5 star review average, and I sold out my first print run in less than a year.
I enjoyed it so much that I wanted to do it again, but this time, I wanted to make something really fun.
I've selected the images I want to use as inspiration for the coloring book pages, and the illustrator is working on them as we speak. I'll be revealing more images as the campaign goes on, so check back for updates--or just back the project!
I've teamed up with Pauline Neuwirth of East End Press, who has been designing and producing beautiful books for some of the top publishers in New York for decades. We've worked together in the past, and she always keeps me on time and on budget, so I'm lucky to get to work with her on this project. She has made postcard coloring books for the Hamptons and New York, so she's a total pro at this.
Shinta Ayu Dewi, the talented artist who is creating the illustrations, has worked on lots of other coloring books, including several with Pauline.
We're hoping to have the books printed by the end of 2016 and out to you by January 2017.
$5500 will cover the costs of making this book, including photo permissions, the illustrations, a print run of 1000 copies, shipping, rewards, and Kickstarter fees.
If we exceed this amount, I've got a few stretch goals to create more illustrations and make the project more awesome, which I'll announce after we hit the goal.
We're so thrilled that we reached our initial goal! To make this project even cooler for everyone, we've got a few stretch goals.
Stretch Goal 1: $6000
When we reach this level, we'll create an additional printable color-in image which we'll send to all the backers.
Stretch Goal 2: $6500
When we reach this level, we'll create a second additional printable color-in image which we'll send to all the backers.
Stretch Goal 3: $7500
In honor of this weekend's WFTDA Championship Tournament, if we reach $7500, we'll create a coloring book image representing the winners of the 2016 championship tournament! Every backer at every level (even a dollar!) will get a copy, and every backer who has pledged for a physical reward will get a bonus 2016 Champs printed postcard.
Please share with your friends and leaguemates to help us reach these goals. Remember, every backer at every level gets the downloadable stretch goal rewards!
The ebook is a downloadable, printable version of the book with oversized 8 x 10" illustrations.

Risks and challenges
When I don't have my skates on, I've been working in and around the publishing industry for more than 13 years. I made Derby Life and delivered it to my backers on time, and people have loved it.
For this project, I'm partnering with one of the best designers and production managers in the business to ensure that the book is high quality and done on time.
The primary risk is the possibility of delays at the printer or in transit, especially if the weather is crummy this winter. I'll keep you all updated if we run into any snags.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
