"Descubre" is a Newsprint Magazine that will document and shed light on current Peruvian artists and designers through interviews and studio visits. You will get first hand insights into the artists' journey, how they came to be, and learn about each artist’s space, process, and influences–often left unseen in a gallery or museum setting.
The main goal of the project is to investigate the current direction and perspective of Peruvian contemporary art and design scene.
I have identified emerging Peruvian artists and designers that are either based in New York or Peru. This is how your money will be spent based on which funding goal is met:
$3,000 – The budget will allow me to conduct in-person interviews and studio visits with artists based in New York, as well as online interviews with artists in Peru. The magazine's content will be shaped by the conversations between me and the artists, as well as samples of their work personally shared by them.
$5,000 – The budget will cover my travel expenses between New York and Peru to conduct in-person interviews and studio visits with every artist. A photographer will capture professional shots of the artists' work and studio for the magazine while I interact and engage with the artists. Field notes about the studio visits will be shared on Instagram.
Here's a list of artists and designers that have kindly agreed to participate with me in this project so far:
Why am I doing this?
I’m a Peruvian native living in New York with over 7 years of experience working as a graphic designer. I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in Interaction Design at the School of Visual Arts.
Over the past months, I have researched the Peruvian community and learned that:
There is a disconnection with today's culture. Despite the grandiose cultural heritage of Peru, the young generation does not relate to what is currently being depicted in the media.
There is a desire to stay informed. Peruvians want to learn about news that are informative or aspirational in nature in topics that go beyond politics and gossip.
This project will uncover Peruvian culture, and make it visible to not only Peruvians, but anybody interested in contemporary Art and Design practices.
Thank you so much for your support! Whichever reward you choose, your name will be listed in gratitude on the magazine.

10. Art Commissioner
Commission a unique 30" x 30" drawing or painting by Carolina Arévalo after a 30m-1hr consultation with the artist based on your own personal journey.
Artist Statement: Each commission piece will be made after having a conversation in the one we'll talk about where are you in your life, your experiences, how are you feeling now, what goals you'd wish to accomplish, etc. After hearing this I will proceed to create a unique work of art that carries all the essence and power of what the conversation evoked. The idea is to become a transumer of what people carry inside with the intention of transforming their personal story into a vision, a path, a silent companion, a reminder, an aid, and maybe, an ally in your quest of balance and inner piece.
Risks and challenges
If the funds are raised, the main challenge will be getting all the content, design, printing and shipping together by the end of the year. Due to my schedule as a graduate student, I am planning to work on this project over the summer. I am hoping to deliver by the end of the year. Otherwise, I might push the release date by next Spring.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
