I am a contemporary artist exhibiting in public venues where reflection and discussion of artworks is a critically important goal. I am producing Scaled Discords as an interactive art experience to facilitate awareness through physical interactions with symbols of racial inequity in America. Scaled Discords will be a large scale, sculptural, sound installation of kinetic tops that audiences will be asked to manipulate. Through their gestures and sounds, audiences will explore symbolic power relations between white, black and red tops.
This installation is designed to push the thinking of participants in venues where often these issues may be overlooked. Scaled Discords uses a multimedia vocabulary that asks audiences to question the status quo of social hierarchies in our society as well as the relationships which exist in our communities between institutional authorities and the people they serve.
The funding of Scaled Discords will cover the costs to fabricate a large set (25+) of sonic art tops with design improvements. Funding will also support the shipping costs of this exhibition as it tours public art institutions across America.
Risks and challenges
This project has been tested through production as well as with audiences in public forums through vetted critique. There are no risks in completing the project physically. The challenge will be to open up viewers to consider the ideas presented in Scaled Discords.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
