Who is this guy?
Hey there! I am Marcus. I am a 19 year old university student and graphic designer from Plymouth, UK...
What are you Kickstarting?
I have created a map that takes influence from the famous London Tube Map that we as a nation have grown to know and love (and plaster onto merchandise). However, instead of taking the 'Hammersmith & City' tube route, how's about you go for a pub crawl on the 'Drake & City' route? How about instead of riding on 'Victoria', you and some mates go enjoy a cold one on any of the stops along the wonderful 'Barbican'?
I want to see the map that I have designed on A3, A4, and A5 premium paper prints. That is what I am Kickstarting with this campaign!
Why are you Kickstarting?
I am fundraising money for a university project that will be assessed as a part of my final grade for my second year at Plymouth College of Art. I wanted a way to benefit not only my studies, but also a way to benefit the local businesses in my city. One of the key industries I wanted to help out was the ever-struggling pub industry.
I appreciate going to my local and conversing with friends I haven't met yet because it is never a dull time. Sadly, the UK's drinking establishments are closing at an alarming rate. 1 of every 3 Pounds spent in a British pub goes to the government meaning that businesses are closing their doors (at a rate of 3 a day) for the last time, and along with them, people are losing their livelihoods and jobs. This is especially important to me. Of the 900,000 jobs that the beer and pub industry upholds, 44% of them are taken by people of my generation (16-24). The opportunity to pull pints is valuable work experience for people trying to get a foothold into employment because of the traits and skills it can teach you, and I don't want to see that value lost. Plymouth is a city of such beauty and the pubs are closely interlinked with this charm. It is also the home of Plymouth Gin!
That is why I have focused my love for art and design, and focused the skills I am utilising as a graphic designer, on spreading awareness for the establishments in my city as I attempt to receive the best mark possible in my studies.
The future of the Local.
So, where do I see this going after my studies are complete? I believe that 'Falloverground' could become a brand that is recognised all over Plymouth. It would mean the world to me to be at least partly responsible for helping out pubs and bars across Devon, and perhaps, the country. These prints are just the first installment in what I hope will be an exciting journey and experience, and with your support, it can be a successful first installment too. I would love to use this Kickstarter to catapult my idea into entire ranges of merchandise. T-shirts, bar mats, engraved pint glasses, coasters. You name it, I would love to see the 'Falloverground' logo on it, spreading awareness of the families that devote their lives to running a place where we can come together and relax.
Please drink responsibly. This artwork has been created in support of Plymouth establishments and to spread awareness of the issues they face. It is not an endorsement of harmful drinking and underage drinking. Please be safe and considerate of others when you're having fun.
Risks and challenges
I am anticipating few risks and challenges. However, the main area where I can see any risk is in the printing process. Should any errors arise, I will be sure to chase up with the suppliers of the frames for the collectors' edition, and the company I am using to get the prints done, to iron out any issues. Of course, everyone will be kept up to date with any problems at all times.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
