We are the Brobdingnagian Bards: Marc Gunn (autoharp, vocals) and Andrew McKee (recorder, mandolin, vocals). We play Celtic Renaissance music with a fantasy twist inspired by the Renaissance festivals where we began our music careers.
Our music is a little Irish and Scottish. It’s inspired by Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and geek culture. It’s uplifting music that makes people laugh, cry, and sigh.
We’ve released nine studio albums to date. We want to do it again. Will you help us?
ABOUT THE ALBUM
Did you know our band broke up in 2008?
Yup. There were a lot of Nagians who were upset. But what sucked worse was we had written a few songs together before we split. Some tracks were already recorded. Others were arranged during our reunion shows.
The music was ready to be placed on an album. But we were no longer together as a band.
We reunited officially in 2018. That’s when we decided it was time to finish this long-awaited album.
We had nearly thirty songs to choose from. There were a bunch of cover songs like the 2001 cover we made of George Harrison’s “Something” or our ever-popular “Disney’s Robin Hood Medley”.
But long ago, we realized that the music industry is ultimately about new, original music. We had written a lot of it. We had instrumental tunes (“My Irish Valentine”), true stories to share (“Jingle Bards”), a love song parody inspired by Air Supply and Aurelio Voltaire (“Zombie Love Song”), and our take on the Disney acquisition of Star Wars (“Jedi Mickey”).
Our Lord of the Rings-inspired music led to our Hobbit Drinking Songs show at Dragon Con in front of 700+ fans of JRR Tolkien. It also inspired us to record several songs (“Middle Earth Bragging Song”, “The Prettiest Hobbit”, “Seven Drunken Nights in Hobbiton”, and “Thorin’s Eulogy”).
One of our most-popular songs at live shows for nearly 15 years is also the title track, “I Will Not Sing Along”. The song is by another Renaissance festival performer, Brian Leo of Molly & The Tinker. We dragged in several other performers and fans to help us perform the song.
Here’s the complete list of songs on the album:
- Mickey's Drinking Song - Drinking song about Disney buying Star Wars
- Seven Drunken Nights in Hobbiton - Hobbits that drink too much
- My Irish Valentine - Beautiful instrumental inspired by Valentine’s Day
- Middle Earth Bragging Song - Who is the oldest race in Middle Earth
- Fall of Serenity Valley - Instrumental written for Firefly documentary
- Jingle Bards - True story and parody about our first out-of-town gig
- One note concerto in G - Comedic instrumental
- I Will Not Sing Along - The anti-singalong song
- Zombie Love Song - Air Supply/Voltaire parody
- On the Front Porch - Firefly-inspired instrumental
- Road to Lisdoonvarna/Morrison's/Swallowtail - traditional Irish tune set
- Prettiest Hobbit - Irish song, “I’ll Tell My Ma” inspired by hobbits
- Thorin's Eulogy - Bilbo's eulogy for Thorin Oakenshield
- Lady of the Lake - Arthurian medieval instrumental
Our popularity over the years is largely due to our success at Renaissance festivals and science fiction conventions. So you’ll hear a lot of music inspired by our geek fandoms. There are some fun sing-alongs and you’ll enjoy the instrumental music like some of what first launched our success on MP3.com nineteen years ago when our tune “Tolkien” made us one of the Top 20 bands on that site.
The Brobdingnagian Bards are an entirely crowdfunded band. We relaunched our band on Patreon in 2018. But that barely covers the day-to-day expenses of running a band and making a living as musicians.
Our albums are self-produced. It may seem like we could create albums for free and release them to the world. But it’s not so simple.
Here are some of the expenses that your support helps us pay for:
- Physical production of CDs
- Printing of shirts, stickers, and pins
- Andrew’s travel to Birmingham
- Album graphics
- Lost income from other side gigs
- Marc’s time away from family
- Shipping products to you
- Taxes & Fees
- Advertising to reach old fans and new ones
- Promoting on iTunes and Spotify
- And of course, money to pay us for our time!
- $7000 - Add a new song to the CD!
We will write and record a bonus song to add to this CD.
- $10,000 - Exclusive Live Streaming Concert before Dragon Con!
If we hit this goal, then we will perform a live streaming concert on the Thursday before Dragon Con (August 29, 2019 at 8:00 PM EST). The show will be exclusively available to EVERY LEVEL of Kickstarter supporter. We will perform for at least an hour. But it could be longer depending on YOUR interaction.
- $13,000 - Record a 4-song EP of Cover Songs
We recorded several covers for this album. We decided not to release them in the end to avoid paying royalties. But we will make an exception if we hit this goal. We will record several of our popular cover songs. We may eventually even make them public. lol

Twenty years is a long time to be creating music. We are extremely grateful to all of the amazing people who so generously support us over the years: coming to shows, buying our CDs, and just interacting with us. We have a lot of incredible friends, like you. Thank you for being here for us. We are forever grateful and so very happy that you continue to support us after two decades.
Risks and challenges
This is the first Brobdingnagian Bards’ Kickstarter. It’s also the first studio album after 10 years of being officially “broken up”. Many of our fans have moved on. They don’t realize we are creating new music. We really don’t know how to reach them to make this album a success. All we can do is try.
If we do reach our goal, then there are all sorts of new challenges, including fulfillment. Should we add stretch goals? We will. But it’ll prove challenging.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
