The project description:

This small board fits on an Arduino. It is a kit you put together yourself.  It is good if you are learning to use an Arduino board or learning to solder.  It includes LEDs and a push button. It does does NOT include an Arduino board.

**************************************************************************

*NEW* a new reward has been added.  This includes a companion board with a small microcontroller (ATtiny45) and a battery. I am calling this the Fish Bowl.

Now the Blinky Fish can be a stand alone project.  The Attiny will be preprogramed.  You will also be able put the new board ontop of an Arduino Uno and re-program the chip using the Arduino software. The rewards "Fish out of Water" and "School of Flying Fish" include the new board.

Here is the prototype:

The original "Blinky Fish Kit" rewards are unchanged.

This was a late development and is based on suggestions from backers to make a standalone version that did not require a full Arduino board.

Notes:

"Arduino" is a trademark of the Arduino team.  Learn all about it here: http://arduino.cc/en/

Using the Arduino to program the Attiny is based on this tutorial: http://hlt.media.mit.edu/?p=1706

The idea to make the new board like an Arduino sheild came from this instructable http://www.instructables.com/id/ATtiny-Programming-Shield-for-Arduino-1/ by instructables member Plusea. She does great work and makes the best handmade electronics you will see anywhere.

****************************************************************************

This was an Instructables project!

Now I have turned it into a Kickstarter project!  I briefly sold this on a web-store. I like making things, but I do not want to run a business.

Yay, Kickstarter!

The parts:

all the parts
all the parts

The Blinky Fish Kit includes:

  • Printed circuit board (PCB, green)
  • LED's (red)
  • Resistors
  • Push buttons
  • Right angle header
  • Some solder (not shown)

Final Blinky Kit component quantities will depend on funds raised.

Call this a parametric rewards system, if you would like.

Targets:

  • $250 ---   3 boards
  • $900 ---   5 boards
  • $1,650 -- 7 boards
  • $3,000 --10 boards

All other components will be determined by the PCB count.  Ex. 5 boards -> 15 LEDs.

I've done this because the cost per component goes down as the number of backers goes up.

I would like to do this with the "Fish Out of Water Kit", but I will not have factory quotes until after the funding period is over.  If I can get more stuff for the same price, then I will add parts to the "Fish Out of Water Kit" and "School of Flying Fish Kit" as well.

Current design:

Here are boards from the original design, this had a minor error which I have fixed.

Here is the fixed schematic:

Here is the fixed printed circuit board:

Detailed assembly instructions:

There are detailed build instructions and more photos here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Blinky-Fish/

You will also need:

  • A soldering iron
  • Wire cutters
  • An  Arduino board with female headers (like the Arduino UNO shown below) and a computer with the Arduino software.

Here is the Blinky Fish attached to an Arduino board (the Arduino is not included)

This is what the Arduino program looks like:

Costs:

All the Kickstarter money will go towards parts, shipping, and fees.

Here is a rough breakdown of costs for the "Blinky Fish Kit":

  • Printed circuit boards: $6
  • Components: $2
  • Packaging and shipping: $4
  • Fees and taxes: $2
  • Other Stuff: $1

 *NEW*  FISH OUT OF WATER

We have now developed a second board that will act like a base for the Blinky Fish that includes an Attiny45 microcontroller and battery. This makes for a much more complete project, once it is assembled you will not need to a full Arduino board to control the Blinky Fish (however to change the program running on the Attiny45 you will need an Arduino UNO or other programmer).

I do not have complete quotes for this part of the project.  I have added a few dollars to each reward in case my estimates are wrong.

If I can get better prices, then I will add more stuff to each kit.

Production plan:

  • Once the project is funded, I will immediately order one 'quick turn' board.  This is to confirm that I've gotten everything correct.  It will take about 2 weeks.
  • After I check the first board, and fix as needed, I will order the rest of the boards and all the parts.  This will take 4 - 6 weeks.
  • Once everything comes in I'll package and ship the kits, I think this will take one week.

This puts the production time at 9 weeks from the time the goal is met.

Rewards:

The main reward is the kit.  I will also send you a hand written thank you note.

I will also send one person the first board I order.  This will be assembled and tested.  It might have repairs.

Who am I?

I am an engineer.  I've worked for about 10 years at a medical device company near Boston MA. I design stuff pretty often, including printed circuit boards.

Risks and challenges

The most likely problem is that I would make an error when ordering the boards. This is the second version, so I am pretty sure it will work. But it is easy to make mistakes, that is why I am ordering one board first. If that one is fine, then I will follow up with the larger order.

I will be relying on a fabricator to make the printed circuit boards. There could be delays, so I have used the worst case build times to set the final delivery dates.

I really want to have a successful project, so I have tried to keep things simple and give as much information as possible.
