We are Chris and Jobin, the engineers, designers and carpenters behind Maram. Based in Melbourne, Australia we design and create furniture that better integrates with our devices. Our first venture is Mesa 57, a desk with fully integrated cable management that plugs in.
Announcing our first stretch goal: Rise 57
Introducing Rise 57, a bolt on floating shelf strong enough to hold dual monitor arm desk clamps with 30” monitors. Made from the same timber, it complements the desks bevel and curve. The floating design adds 25% extra desk space, plus its full length gives a variety of locations to clamp monitor arms and place your various desk knick-knacks.
We need at least 25 units ordered to make this happen so if you love it go ahead and add AUD $125 / US $90 to your Mesa 57 reward, no additional shipping charge.
Mesa 57 is a beautifully crafted, mid-century modern, seriously solid wood desk. A desk designed for the devices we use on them, minimising cable visibility, without compromising on materials and aesthetics. This is a project we have been working on for the last 2 years in our converted garage workshop, building 5 prototypes, with the 4th and 5th as our pre-production models.
We found inspiration by looking at our own cable clutter, dissatisfied with the lack of integrated solutions, we realised the potential for an updated desk design.
Built-in Power Outlets and USB
We built power outlets right into the desk for easy access, convenience and to hide those pesky cables. With up to 8 power outlets at your reach, you will not be hunting for wall outlets anymore.
In addition to the 8 power outlets (6 for US), there is a USB-A and USB-C port for powering your laptops, mobiles or other portable devices. The USB-A is capable of providing 5V/2.1A, while the USB-C Qualcomm® can deliver 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/2A, 20V/1.5A. The USB-C is also capable of Power Delivery (PD) Fast Charging (30W).
The carefully engineered access flap gives you quick and easy access to the power outlets while keeping your cables tidy. The downward movement of the flap means you do not have to disturb your setup in order to reach the power outlets.
In designing Mesa 57, we have thought about all the devices one would have on and around their desk and made 5 cable ports on the compartment.
The 5 cable ports, 1 on each face, provide passage of cables from devices below and on the desk. In addition, you have the option to chose which rear leg, left or right, you want the mains power lead to exit.
All this cable management means you can finally vacuum under your desk!
Located in the cool hills of Victoria, Australia is a national resource of naturally and sustainably grown timber. Eucalyptus Regnans and Eucalyptus Delegatensis, two similar and utterly beautiful hardwood species are known as Vic Ash. As one of Australia's trusted hardwoods it has been used for generations by builders, designers and architects for its stability, strength and beautiful grain patterns.
For all these reasons and more we chose to make our table-tops and legs entirely out of Vic Ash.
We love dat ash so much, we can't let it go to waste. So, we are upcycling the leg off-cuts to make unique serving boards which you can pledge for right here.
Clean lines and smooth curves with our signature asymmetrical bevel and contoured cut-out. This mid-century modern design will add sophistication to any setup.
The future may very well be wireless and with our devices definitely heading that way, we built a wireless charger into the desk in a way that does not interfere with the beautiful Vic Ash grain.
You can choose 1 of 4 zones to have your wireless charger built in, to suit your setup.
The wireless charger is easily accessible from underneath the desk giving you the flexibility to upgrade should wireless charging standards change.
We chose magnetic hooks as this allows you to move them around and place them on either side of the desk. Being magnetic means, if you bump into them, they easily detach, protecting your knees and the hooks!
The standard magnetic hook is capable of hanging items weighing up to approximately 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs).
For the heavy users, we created the Big Boi. This titanic double arm hook, while still magnetic, can hang items weighing up to 6kg (13.3 lbs), perfect for those beefy headphones, chunky cables, delicate handbags, 2 baseball caps, and smol pets and babies.
All hooks are made of solid Vic Ash with an inset neodymium magnet, stained in either Espresso or Sand.
Stain and Colour
Mesa 57 comes in 2 stain/colour options:
- Espresso with black compartment and black power board
- Sand with white compartment and white power board
Suited to any lifestyle
Mesa 57 is suited for every type of user.
Ready to get your desk plugged in? Back us now by pledging!
Due to differing electrical standards, dimensions of the power board on the Australian and US versions vary as shown below.
Our intent is to make Mesa 57 accessible to a wider audience. We are capable of producing these desks in our workshop but we require upgraded tools to produce Mesa 57 in a safer, more efficient and cost-effective manner. We have 2 simple approaches:
- Upgrading our table saw and jointer
- Acquiring materials in bulk since manufacturing in larger quantities reduces material costs
This will make it viable for us to build Mesa 57 and bring it to a plug point near you!
Risks and challenges
We’ve been working on our prototypes for 2 years and since we’re the manufacturers we know the processes involved to build our desk. That being said, there are some things that are beyond our control. We have however, consider extra time in our timeline to allow for any delays in materials, equipment supply or setting up.
We believe that communication is key in establishing trust and building solid and lasting relationships. We will keep you continually informed on all the updates and how the project is progressing.
We have reduced our risks as low as practicable and will endeavour to have you receive the Mesa 57 right on time.
If there's one thing we know, it's how to make desks and as long as that remains, we will ensure you get your Mesa 57. We're are setting Maram up for the long run and that means looking after all our supporters right from the start.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
